Thomas Malthus Verified Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Goose has a good point in that the CAN dollar being low definitely makes it less attractive to invest in infrastructure (provided that some or all of the materials are sourced from the US). However, the interest rate being low makes it a very good time to do so. They're competing effects but I think the interest rate being low probably dominates the exchange rate disincentive.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 So Beeston was bs'ing about the grass too?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 So Beeston was bs'ing about the grass too? Beeston BS'd about a lot of things. I love how he promised grass years after he was no longer going to be the president (2018 was it?). Dude was full of s***. Unfortunately, most of the clueless media and fanbase bought into it.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Honestly grass shouldn't be such a pipe dream. If they really wanted to do it they could. Maybe it is. I'm not sure what the cost of doing it would be or anything, although I would imagine it would be very expensive, and that's probably why Shapiro doesn't consider it a high priority. I'm just saying no one should have believed Beeston promising something so far in advance when he knew he wasn't going to be around by then. It's easy to promise stuff so far in advance when you know you won't be around to answer for it when that time comes.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 If anyone wants a great laugh Casuals are the worst. I really hope this team plays well next year, for Shapiro's sake. The dude has a huge target on his back.

The dude has a huge target on his back. Kinda sucks for me as a new fan. I started watching at the half way point of the season and it was incredibly exciting. I barely knew the rules of baseball going into it and was completely hooked by the end. As a big hockey fan througout my life there have rarely been moments that come close to that excitement level I had during the run they had this year. Hearing all these rumors about a rebuild is just turning me off, and if it seems like they're just not gonna try for the championship then I don't know if it will keep my interest very long. I gotta imagine a lot of new fans are gonna feel this way. "I don't know anything but allow me to complain anyway"
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Lmfao, this comment gets downvoted to hell: What a crazy idea, right? To think a front office guy in charge of money cares about money? And this board is a hivemind? Holy f***. There, it's either whine about the front office for no reason or gtfo.

NotThatGuy Verified Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Would the low canadian dollar make this a good time to invest in infrastructure, a bad time or not really change things? Just an honest question to anyone who might have some thoughts on the matter. The low Canadian dollar would not make this a good time to invest in infrastructure - it would either make it a bad time, or not really change things. Obviously, if you have to import anything, it'll cost more. If you don't have to import anything, either the price won't be affected by the Canadian dollar (it could be affected by other factors, of course), or, depending on the severity and speed of the reaction, prices will increase through inflationary factors.

The best was "payroll will be going up". Then payroll drops 14 Million in 2015 and actually was a below average payroll to start the season.
nmrch Verified Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Honestly grass shouldn't be such a pipe dream. If they really wanted to do it they could. Given the way the Rogers Centre is built it is a pipedream in the sense that it will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 million dollars. Beeston flat out mislead the fans and the public about the logistics of it. That's a quarter of the overall cost(or more) for a brand new stadium, there was never any reason to believe it was going to happen. Rogers would have never spent quarter of a billion dollars on a 30 year old facility just to install grass.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Forgive my ignorance but how does grass cost 250 million dollars..
nmrch Verified Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Forgive my ignorance but how does grass cost 250 million dollars.. Its not just the grass. The modifications that have to be made to the stadium to put it in are huge. All that concrete has to be dug up and they have to install brand new drainage and ventilation systems. Its a big and expensive engineering project. And apparently 200 million dollars is on the low end of the estimate, it could be as high as 400 million.

I think i also remember someone saying that that RC in the summer would be unbearably hot and humid with the grass installed. Probably need a new AC and dehumidifying system too.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Poor Shapiro - Beeston promises grass in the near future knowing he won't be around to see it through - AA tells the fans he wants Price back knowing he won't be around to see it through - AA and Beeston gut the farm and max out payroll for rentals and expensive talent because they know it's their last year and they won't be around for the consequences Shapiro has to put out fires all over the place.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Forgive my ignorance but how does grass cost 250 million dollars.. I heard they have to dig almost 2 feet down through the concrete to build proper drainage and that is the biggest obstacle to putting grass in. But I really have no idea at all what the costs of doing any of that stuff is so I couldn't even guess a dollar figure for that.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 (edited) Yeah poor Shapiro inherits a 2016 contender with the likes of Donaldson, Tulo, Bautista, Encarnacion, Stroman.. Of all the franchises that had new executives come in (Philly, Seattle, Milwaukee, LAA) Toronto is the best situation, so lets stop with the notion that he inherited some dumpster fire. Not to mention it has the potential to be one of the top markets in MLB if it isn't already. Edit: Forgot about Boston, I'd put them number 1 but the point still stands Edited December 19, 2015 by burlingtonbandit
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 LOL at the cost of putting grass in. I don't understand how that it could cost that much!
ClevelandBrownsFan2 Verified Member Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 LOL at the cost of putting grass in. I don't understand how that it could cost that much! Maybe because you don't understand how expensive large commercial buildings are to renovate and maintain? Especially doing something unusual...like putting grass indoors. It's not a backyard, where you can just spread some dirt and sprinkle some grass seed.
Pulk_Pull Verified Member Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Putting grass in the RC would be an infrastructural nightmare. We all secretly knew Beest was blowing smoke as the date kept being pushed back. Hard pass if it means we see those funds spent on other improvements the RC needs, like new/less seats and a more open concourse space. Our concourses feel like you are in the bloody TTC. Also, a note about the Shapiro hate... remember all those CLE fans that were happy to see him gone? This seems to be a trend with how he operates.
