THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS 1m1 minute ago Marlins said to be seeking "5 or 6" great young players in trade for Jose, one gm says. Many MLB ready too. Stroman + Travis + Pompey + Osuna + Sanchez Yuk.. That's a steep but fair price. I'd balk at giving up all of that though.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 I wouldn't trade Stroman for Fernandez straight up.
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Pompey/Sanchez/Osuna/Chavez/Hutch + CASH (20m) ...we can pretend Bro, they said "great" players.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 wat I know I'll be in the minority but given the injury history and makeup I'd take 5 years of Stroman over 3 of Fernandez.

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Anyone kind of curious as to why the Jays haven't been pursuing Chapman? Seems like logic would say they need a dominant closer, since only the Rays and Jays are the only two teams in the division without an elite closer.

Seems like logic would say they need a dominant closer, since only the Rays and Jays are the only two teams in the division without an elite closer. Some would argue that both Cecil and Osuna last season would have been considered elite relievers. And our Farm has was decimated by AA at the deadline so not much left there to take out of.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Have you never watched Fernandez pitch? obviously. No doubt he's one of the best starters in the game when healthy. I said I'd be in the minority with this opinion but even though Stroman isn't as good the extra 2 years of control are pretty valuable. I also think Stroman is more likely to sign an extension which would make his value go up as oppose to Fernandez who will surely go to FA. Also as good as Fernandez is it would be a PR disaster to trade Stroman. Everyone would be standing outside RC with pitchforks waiting for Shapiro.

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 That's the joke It also doesn't make your claim any less ridiculous. Stroman is super safe and has a lot of upside. Fernandez is super scary and has arguably the most upside in mlb. Boras also the agent of young Fernandez. I take Stroman as well.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 That's the joke It also doesn't make your claim any less ridiculous. Its not even that ridiculous, plus its an opinion which I said at the time most people won't agree with. Stroman has 2 extra years and a much cleaner injury history. Stroman by all accounts has the much superior makeup as well.

I think we're done trading away young SP in any case.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Josh Johnson 2.0 (Jose Fernandez)? I think we're done trading away young SP in any case. Fernandez is younger than Stroman.

If the Marlins offered that trade I highly doubt Shapiro accepts it. For them to trade Stroman it would have to be an extreme overpay in value.

Do you think Fernandez was just born with the ability to play baseball at an elite level? No, just like Stroman he had to constantly keep working hard to get to the level they're at right now. Also, it's not like he needs to be following a lot of advice from coaches anymore, being a top 5 talent pitcher and all.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 There's no real answer on either side here

Makeup isn't why I wouldn't do the trade, its a factor but the injury factor is more of a deterrent for me. Also like I said Stroman you get for 2 additional years and the much more likely possibility to sign a team friendly extension. It sounds like Fernandez is determined to go to FA in 3 years.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Yes. To think he just worked harder than everyone else is foolish. Was he born substantially more talented at baseball than the average human being? Sure, it's very likely that he was. However, I don't think it's reasonable to believe that he was born with an innate ability to throw a fastball at 97+ mph with great command, or be able to spin arguably the best breaking ball in baseball. That comes from putting in work. I would have imagined that you, having played at a competitive level of baseball, would have agreed with this sentiment. Also, I didn't say he worked harder than anyone else, but to throw around the makeup issue like he's just some kid who won't listen to valuable advice from coaches which will help him improve his game is ludicrous imo. He's an elite talent, who cares if he might be a little cocky?
