Nafro Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Here you go baseball nerds. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/job-posting-toronto-blue-jays-baseball-operations-analytics-intern/#comments
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 I may legitimately apply. That's why I posted it here. I would hope there would be a few people interested.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 •Demonstrated analytic skills and knowledge of a scripting language are a plus. •Experience using SQL and statistical software such as R. Compensation: $12/hour.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 They're basically gonna make the intern do the job of the GM, but lowball him on the pay and title.

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I wonder who would take such a job. Oh wait... It actually sounds like a pretty awesome gig for someone with no responsibilities.
Governator Community Moderator Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 It actually sounds like a pretty awesome gig for someone with no responsibilities. Kind of like someone looking for an internship.
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Yeah if I did not have a three year old, a career and would consider living in Toronto.....it would have been my dream starting job, back in the day.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I'm sure there are some very strong candidates applying.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Kind of like someone looking for an internship. I bet they get a lot of applicants willing to leave full time jobs to work in baseball.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I wonder who would take such a job. Oh wait... Yeah, if you don't have other commitments like a family, tons of people would jump at the chance I'm sure. Hell of a lot better than working for free in the mail room to get noticed, if you want to get in the door.
Governator Community Moderator Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I bet they get a lot of applicants willing to leave full time jobs to work in baseball. True story.
Governator Community Moderator Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I'm sure there are some very strong candidates applying. Maybe you could apply for co-op.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I'm sure there are some very strong candidates applying. And then there's GD
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 They're looking for the next Anthopolous. They'll get 10 years out of him for minimum wage.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I'd get paid more working at Loblaws.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 They basically just hire an overqualified kid in the middle of a math/engineering degree, or fresh out of one, and then suck the love of baseball right out of him before he switches industries. Might actually be a decent job under SHAPIRO though!!!! I would apply but I'm too smart. Also, I don't even know what SQL stands for.

Would definitely be interested if I was single.

art_vandelay275 Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 isn't this how it works when you see a headcount posting like this - a new guy comes in and has a list of things he wants to see from the dept; they are asked to assess what part of it they can accomplish and not accomplish with the existing bandwidth they have; the go back to the new guy and tells him that without additional bandwidth, they can't do all that's asked; the new guy goes to management and get approval for adding the headcount... if this is credible then what this says is that the existing analytics group was not staffed at the level that shapiro wanted; so does this give more cred to the "philosophy difference" and that it's along the lines of "scouting vs analytics"?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I went to the Winter Meetings to try and get a job in baseball like 4 or 5 years ago. You have to take some s*** internship with a place like Baseball Info Solutions for 7 bucks an hour and then you can get an internship like this (which rarely pop up) with an actual team if you can beat out the thousand other candidates. Then after you do 2 or 3 of these internships you might be able to get a "job" where you cut video for barely any money. I'm not really sure where you go from there but I imagine climbing the ranks isn't much easier than getting your foot in the door. The other route to getting a job in baseball is nepotism. You are probably better off moving to LA and trying to become a Hollywood actor.

No, this is an annual thing around this time of year

There were hundreds of jobs alright, they just consisted of the likes of selling minor league tickets in Iowa. Not a single internship like this or anything except for Baseball Info Solutions.
