fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Absolutely, the haters love to overlook these deals. All we hear about is the Dickey trade, which to be objective is the only terrible trade AA has ever made. The Marlins trade wasn't a win, but it wasn't a disaster either. I was outraged by the Napoli-Franky Francisco trade at the time lol. Other than that great deals (and extensions, which don't really get talked about much) from AA. Halladay/Wells deals were great (well we ended up with Travis when it was all said and done), Delebar deal was great at the time, Yunel Escobar trade was fantastic, Marcum for Lawrie was incredible, Rasmus trade (at the time) was amazing, Estrada for Lind was great, Tulo for Reyes + Hoffman + Castro is really good. Happ deal (both ways) was meh. The Esmil Rogers deal was pretty bad too giving up Aviles and Gomes. So looking at the grand scheme of things you cans say 3-4 bad trades in his entire tenure, so the pros waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay outway the cons.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Rubby de la Rosa is a classic buy low guy. A tweak away from being very good. Add a cutter and use his curve more Exact guy I was just thinking of. HR issues...but with a solid groundball rate.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 How much do you think Zimmermann had to do with that? He's always the forgotten guy on the team. I don't know, I doubt at all. But he's a farmboy. He lives well outside the city and leaves the minute the season is over and returns to his population 700 Wisconsin hometown. Only one Nat (Stammen) attended his wedding) This is stuff I get off of Google and I know that AA has his interns collecting this kind of info. I just don't think AA will think he's a fit

Napoli for Francisco d'Arnaud, Syndergaard, Becerra, Buck for Dickey and Thole, Nickeas Aviles and Gomes for Esmil Rogers Marlins trade Hill for Johnson vs. Donaldson Wells Escobar Lawrie Rasmus Morrow I'd be a bit surprised if someone did the math and found that the good far outweighed the bad.

Hill for Johnson wasn't a bad trade really. I mean Hill exploded in Arizona but no way he was going to do what he did over there in Toronto, not as long as Dwayne Murphy was telling the entire team to 'pull dat ball'. Marlins trade was a gamble we had to take, at the time people were pretty OK with the deal. Who ended up being really good for the other side in that deal? I can count Henderson, Hech (this season) and Handsome Jake, maybe Dietrich. We got back Reyes who manned shortstop well while he was here, Buehrle who was an absolute workhorse and JJ who was supposed to be an Ace but really flopped. In hindsight it was a bad deal but at the time it wasn't bad.

I understand why he made the deal, but it didn't work out, at all.

We stole him away from the Braves for Gonzalez who was hitting FA, Pastornicky who's not had a decent season yet and Tim Collins. Esco got us 5.6 fWAR in 2 and a half years on a cheap contract.

There was nothing wrong with it. It was a good deal. It's just unfair to give him credit for that while giving him a pass on the same deal in the opposite direction (the Hill trade).

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 For the people worried about Alex's comment about character over talent. Lets not forget he got the best Third Basema and Shortstop in Baseball in less than 12 months.

I agree but I don't think Reyes helped get us Tulo, it was just a salary dump lol. Instead of the Rox eating salary we gave them Reyes and his contract instead basically lol

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 that comes with the risk of acquiring a guy with an arm that looks like ground beef, its not bad luck Yeah. Would be like selling the farm for Strasburg then being like "s*** happens, not much you can do" when his arm explodes.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Shortstop in Baseball in less than 12 months. He was 10th best this year (yes 2nd best in 14, and best in 13...but still behind Hech who played the same amount of games this year). Keep in mind that when Reyes was acquired it was said that we got "one of the best shortstops in baseball".
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Correa has made it pretty obvious that Tulo is no longer the best SS in baseball. Also, lots of guys are nipping at Tulo's heels for #2 on the list right now.

I actually don't want any credit (nor have I ever seen you discredit me), but a simpleton like me pointed out a bunch of red flags with JJ (admittedly I look for red flags a lot) professional baseball people could have seen these.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Anthopoulos is super active, so he's bound to make lots of good and bad trades. He's also super aggressive, so some of those deals are bound to look positively lopsided, in either context or hindsight. If he's not the type of GM to f*** up every once in a while like he did in the Dickey trade, then he's also not going to be the type of GM to somehow land Donaldson.

bbgobie Verified Member Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Does anyone think him not having a contract is weird? How does it work if he doesn't know he's coming back? Is he clearing at his desk right now and "backing up" scouting reports to take with him?

Nah, he said in the conference that he told both Beeston and Shapiro that he didn't want to discuss extension until the season was over. Shapiro is taking over November 1st and AA's contract is up October 31st, I think it will be a couple of days before the decision is made of keeping him vs. not.
