Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 You just posted today that Ozuna is over-rated? But he's better than Dickey for sure.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 But he's better than Dickey for sure. The Jays need Dickey, and what is the +, any other year I agree.

BeastMode Verified Member Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Rosenthal ending any Dickey rumors Also: The Nationals agreed to pay the difference in Revere’s and Storen’s salaries -- Revere is projected to earn $6.7 million in arbitration by MLBTradeRumors.com, Storen $8.8 million. That element of the trade left the Jays with a small amount of financial flexibility, sources say. The team could use that money to make a lesser move, perhaps for a pitcher or outfielder. http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/wei-yin-chen-miami-marlins-drew-storen-trade-toronto-blue-jays-hot-stove-ken-rosenthal-010916 Maybe now some peeps can stop talking about Upton or Folwer etc.. The reality is we have next to nothing left in payroll at this point and won't be signing anyone significant.

Sanchez seems to be a well liked clubhouse guy, irrationally not liked on here by some posters. Him and Syndergaard were tight too back in the day.

Maine Jays Verified Member Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Miami could but we wouldn't get much in return. I'd take five years of Carter Capps for one of Dickey. Sanchez to the rotation. Capps in the seventh. Cecil eighth. Storen ninth. Turn Osuna into the Duane Ward clone for a year as suggested in the article on MLB Trade Rumors (110-120 innings in the pen this year, SP in 2017)

Ross Atkins Blue Jays GM told me this morning that he has told both Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista that he wants to keep both long term rather than trade them or let them depart via free agency. They have not made any extension offers yet.... but have talked at length with both and have a scheduled meeting with Bautista next week. Just FYI

But that does scare me. An aging expensive team doesn't sound Shapiro-like to me. 4/72 for 31 year old Gordon means ? for these two?

Should be closing.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 When you read all the quotes, it kind of sounds like Atkins has put a serious cap on how much he wants to spend on them and is going to try to see what kind of leverage he has to get them to agree to his terms. Doesn't sound like he's going to break the bank at all. http://www.thescore.com/news/932962
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I think this is just formality. Neither will get the kind of offers that will make them avoid free agency. The only hope we have is that both look at the unsigned offensive free agents left and rationalize that security is more important.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Bautista on a four year deal after this season would cover ages 36-39 and Edwin for the same length would cover ages 34-37. I find it very hard to believe that this regime would pay those guys $20m a year over those ages when you're looking at a realistic drop in performance. Maybe they re-sign one of them if the right deal comes along, or one of the players has trouble finding the right suitor in free agency, but I'm heading into 2016 expecting this to be the last season for both guys in Toronto. This is one of the few times where "Alex would have tried to do it" would actually be a realistic narrative. I don't think Shapiro + Atkins will go that route. This screams "Dave Dombrowski", though. At least one will end up in Boston, likely by Dombrowski bidding against himself.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I think as long as this regime makes a real effort to win it all in 2016 no one will be upset.

Fans will like it for the first 1-2 years, then the last 1-2 they will wish they were traded sooner. Too bad, the Jays have budget constraints but they could really build off getting prospects if they agreed to trades (maybe sign and trade). The habs were in a similar situation with Markov, and now he's basically an overpaid 4th dman who is slow and can't keep up. Sometimes it just takes a small period of time for age to catch up to you, then you wished you did things differently. The Jays don't have the NYY luxury of just adding and adding if things go wrong.

I think there's a very good chance that Bautista and Encarnacion are both worth more than the contracts they sign; that should be the bottom line for Atkins. Unlikely you're going to get players of their value for less money via FA or trade, signing them seems the best option. I think both guys will age exceptionally well.
