o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 No, but it does illustrate the often overlooked point that lineup construction doesn't really make that much difference overall. A few runs here or there over the course of a season. Obviously you would like to optimize it, but it doesn't make that much difference in the end. since a manager is rated at +-3 WAR I'd imagine the lineup is even less than that, BUT it would be entirely frustrating to have a guy with a s***** OBP leading off all year. It might not make a big difference but it would FEEL wrong
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 I would love it if Pillar hits leadoff

glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 If Tulo outright says "I don't want to hit leadoff," you don't hit him leadoff. Lineup construction is more about not being massively stupid than it is maximization. Saunders at leadoff would be fine. Pillar, probably less so. I agree with the first part. If Tulo wants to hit lower in the order, then do it. Some players prefer hitting in a certain spot. It's better the player be comfortable than try to force something he is not happy with. On the flip side, Pillar is a bad choice for lead off. Saunders with two knees would be OK, but he has one. Out of all the options with Travis out, I'd go with Martin. He's the best hitter out of the two other choices.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Honestly, Pompey has the best MiLB career OBP, and his approach could translate well as a MLB leadoff hitter. I'm partially convinced that Gibby doesn't like him very much.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Its not the biggest difference, but Gibby is still very dumb. Martin makes so much more sense.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Players still care about RBIs and have retarded pre-conceived notions like you bat your best hitter 3rd. It's ignorant, but it is what it is. Perhaps psychologically undermining several of your best players really would be a significant detriment to your team. I guess what I'm saying is I don't really care much. It would be amazing to know how many players are stuck in 1993...
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 If Austin Jackson wants a 1 year deal to significantly increase his value this should be the place for him. 2 year $15M. Get it done
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 2 year $15M. Get it done Unless the team promises to relegate Saunders to a bench role I'm not sure I can see them being able to convince Jackson to sign here. From his perspective, he wants to increase his value for the contract after this one so taking a PT role defeats that purpose. I imagine he probably said something similar to the Angels, though the one-year contract they offered probably wasn't all that attractive either. OTOH, it'd be a guaranteed $15M for him (if we go by your offer). Not bad considering his abilities haven't been at their peak lately.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Just let the A-Jax fantasy die. Pompey needs somewhere to play. He's probably better than Jackson next year as it is. Totally agree. I wouldn't even be surprised if Pompey put up 3-4 WAR this season with great D and a 340+ OBP.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 The Angels apparently like Saunders. Just trade him there and sign Jackson for a year. Signing Jackson to a one year deal wouldn't prevent Pompey from playing. The Jays will probably need him regardless at some point, and then he can start in one of the OF spots in 2017.

In a perfect world. What exactly is wrong with Saunders? I mean, if healthy, he fits like a glove.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Who wants to start the Fire Gibby 2016 thread? Let's not waste any time. You!
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 So, Saunders goes from throwaway piece to possibly our everyday LF and leadoff hitter. Awesome. Can he run? Walk? Stand??? He gets on base, no different than him churning up Martin as a lead-off man, I can see it.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 If Tulo is destined to hit 5th I'd do Martin leadoff. If they are worried about Martin's workload then Saunders vs RHP and Martin vs LHP seems like a good idea. He's said that.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 In the two years before last, Saunders had about a .338 OBP vs. RHP which is what most projections would spit out for Tulo and Martin so it's really not a big deal to me. Pillar has the potential to be a disaster in that spot but if he grinds his way to a .315-.320 OBP it's not going to sink our team. Again, Gibby spoke yesterday of Martin and Saunders as an option.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 The Royals just won the WS with the 4th worst hitter in all of baseball last year leading off. It's just much easier to roll your eyes and stop caring This... although dumn... lol, he only scored 76 runs, my God.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 In the end, does it really f***ing matter!!!
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 I tried so hard, but didn't get so far, in the end...
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 This... although dumn... lol, he only scored 76 runs, my God. I think Escobar was only put into the leadoff spot halfway through the year.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 (edited) I think the issue is late in the game in high leverage situations not the overall expected run value over the course of the season. If the 9th inning is coming up and you are down by a run do you want Goins-Pillar-Donaldson or Goins-Martin-Donaldson? When Goins/Pillar/Donaldson will come up in a big situation, the lineup will look awful but there's no guarantee that will happen with any frequency. There's so much variance. For every time, your s***** lineup works against you, there will be times where it lines up perfectly late in the game in a big situation but no one will notice that. They'll only notice the times it doesn't work. In the end, it's likely to all be a wash. Edited February 27, 2016 by KingKat
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 I think Escobar was only put into the leadoff spot halfway through the year. So Yost saw Escobar make weak contact for half the year, never walk and thought, lets get that kid more bats!!!.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't really care much. Exactly this You don't really care who hits 2-3-4, etc, you just want the team to win games However, I would pretty much guarantee that a guy like Bautista cares VERY much about the "honor" of batting 3rd in the lineup, and the extra RBIs that come with it
AdamLindsMom Verified Member Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 All this pissing and moaning about the leadoff spot. Why not just shift the order up and have JD/Bats leadoff to get your best players as many AB's as possible.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Question for you all. Assuming Votto can be moved, would you rather have EE (DH) and Votto (1B), or EE (DH) and JB (1B) going forward?

Would you rathe move JB to leadoff?
