BTS Community Moderator Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Yeah and some increased flexibility with the DH spot might be beneficial. I'm starting to side with the Bautista should play less outfield crowd (but I'm not in the Bautista should play 1B crowd). Which of the two do you keep going forward if they command identical contracts? I'm kind of leaning towards Edwin. Two years younger, and despite a K/BB scare earlier this year his skills have remained completely intact, and his last 4 years have been as consistent as it gets. He feels like one of those hitters who's skill set ages well.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 The problem is that there's probably not room for both payroll-wise in 2017. It could definitely make sense to move one this offseason. Don't they both have 10-5 status?? Why not just go with them for another year...
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Don't they both have 10-5 status?? Why not just go with them for another year... Would one of them waive to go to, say, St. Louis or something? I don't think it would be out of the question.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Jason Heyward, Corey Kluber, and Jeff Samardzija If AA managed to acquire Kluber without giving up Pompey, Osuna, or Vlad Jr, I'd change my username to AA's Shrine. The crazy thing is that I wouldn't be surprised if he got one of Kluber or Carrasco this off-season with his ninja capabilities.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 OH THAT'S ALL? cf i mean if you're not satisfied we could use Chen/Lackey too
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Oh and one more thing, for Hutch to not f***ing suck.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I think you keep both Bautista and EE next year after that let them both go. No next contract for either However since we are going for it next year again there is no point in trading either. Qualify both and get picks
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 We will need to add pitching and we will be right in the thick of things.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Don't they both have 10-5 status?? Why not just go with them for another year... That's been my stand up until recently but Bautista's outfield play seems to be getting worse by the day and he really looks like a DH all of a sudden. That being said it might not actually be possible to do anything. Asking either to waive 10-5 is not a conversation anyone on the team wants to have.

It could definitely make sense to move one this offseason. I think there is. Payrolls were 137 and 138 million respectively in the past 2 seasons, let's assume they keep it the same. 20- Tulo 15- Martin 14- Bautista 12- Dickey 12- Donaldson 10- Encarnacion 6.7- Revere 3.4- Cecil 2.6- Hutchison 2- Smoak Total: 97.7 million I understand that there will be raises to Martin and Donaldson in 2017 and that we need to add a pitcher, but we have an awful lot of flexibility in the payroll even without any increases.

Tuco Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Sorry but this team badly needs a quality left handed bat.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Sorry but this team badly needs a quality left handed bat. We badly need pitching before that in every sense.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Our lack of lefty relief certainly got exposed. We will have holes to fill in starting rotation and if one of those gets filled with Osuna, we either need a new closer or Cecil with his spot getting filled. Bautista and Encarnacion should be on the roster until at least the trade deadline. If we have no chance at the playoffs then they should be dealt for prospects. I'd love to see a new manager but I see Gibbons sticking around until at least May but if the wheels come off, a replacement has to be considered.

You're talking $100M for 5 guys, with like $35M left for the rest of the 40-man. And the 50 guys will be old as s***.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I really like the idea of Hendrik's getting another shot at starting. I think there is something there
Plat Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Author Posted October 21, 2015 So theres a good chance we lose both EE and Bats?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Neither Bautista or Edwin will be a good investment post 2016
Tuco Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 We badly need pitching before that in every sense. We need both. A quality LH'ed power bat is drastically needed.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 So theres a good chance we lose both EE and Bats? After 2016 neither will be the force they are now
bronson44 Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I don't see why this can't be a max payroll team for the next 3-5 years. It's probably the only way to field a consistent winner right now and the fans have shown they're willing to support it.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 1. New manager 2. Depth including a capable bench. 3. Improving the rotation and bullpen. 4. Upgrade atleast one of the corner outfield spots.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Would not give even the slightest of shits if we gave up all three of them I'm sure I could live with it but Osuna has a ceiling similar to Carrasco as a starter, so I'd like to actually see how he actually does next year as one first. Pompey could become an excellent top of the order bat next season with his new high OBP approach and low k-rate. Vlad Jr is far off but he may have the best ceiling of all. If we part with one, I'd rather it be Pompey, while keeping Alford.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Why wouldn't Bautista be able to play 1B? Cause he fields like s***. His only ability is his arm.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 I don't hear any calls to replace Pillar
candymartinez Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 We need both. A quality LH'ed power bat is drastically needed. Oh yeah, because the offence struggled so bad this year.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 We have some pretty good value that could be redundant at the end of the year: Pompey/Pillar/Revere/Saunders/Hague; Smoak/Colabello (both of we move Jose to DH); Goins/Travis
