So Chase Utley slid into second hard enough to break up the double play, and break Reuben Tejada's leg.

Similarly, Chris Coghlan had a similar slide which broke Jung-Ho Kang's leg, earlier in the season.

In both cases, the runner ran far behind second base, with no attempt to even touch the bag.

In both cases, the runner started their slide so late, they could not have even stayed on the bag.

The rules already exist to prevent this stuff. Is it time to get umpires to start enforcing the rules?

For instance, if a runner runs into a defender, without even touching the bag, I think both he, and the runner going to first should be out. Additionally, that player should be tossed out of the game, and possibly suspended.

Utley better watch himself for the rest of the series.

I absolutely agree. That was an illegal slide in my opinion and amounted to interference so both runners should have been called out.

The rules don't really exist to prevent this. They are vague and actually still encourage hitting the baseman. Butt, legs or chest on the ground prior to the bag should be the rule. With punishment for not following the rule.

This s*** has been ridiculous for a while. If a shortstop is fielding a ground on the baseline the runner can't just run into him making the play. But we had these players making no effort to make a real slide just take out these middle infielders. Don't know why it's acceptable in double play situation.

and I don't know how Terry Collins didn't completely lose his s***. I would make a huge scene. I'd be firing bats and coolers onto the field. It should have been a coaching meltdown of epic proportions.

Don't forget the most memorable post-season example.

lol what the hell is this..mortal kombat.

Baseballs always been the most backward's sport though when it comes to what rules they choose to enforce on any given day

I thought it was pretty bad, clearly didn't slide until 2 feet from the bag. It would have been a tough double play regardless but I think the correct call should have been both runners out for that gongshow. Sucks he got injured too.

They will implement new rules this off season, similar to the Posey rule.

got a huge batch of franchise infielders in the majors right now...got to protect the assets. Every time a Tejada breaks their leg, there is an owner/front office thinking "what if that were Seager, Russell, Correa, Bogaerts, Lindor, Goins...etc"

That inclusion made me LOL

How fun would it be to be on the rules committee this season. Make a rule that will increase double plays, but increase scoring and speed up the game.

Here is a video of Madlock wiping out Jays Tony Fernandez in 87 ending his season. This s*** has been going on forever and been allowed to last. I hope you are right.

Exactly. Why would they change it this year? Middle infielders have been getting injured forever and there's been no urgency to clean this up. MLB doesn't care and they'll just sweep it under the rug as they always do.

read my post...$$$ is the reason that they will change it. Same way Buck Martinez didn't change running catchers, but Buster Posey did. MLB owners won't wait for Correa to break his leg this time.

I posted in the around baseball thread but here is the NCAA rule that has worked very well so far.

NCAA Force Play Slide Rule

SECTION 4.

The intent of the force-play-slide rule is to ensure the safety of all players. This is a safety and an interference rule. Whether the defense could have completed the double play has no bearing on the applicability of this rule. This rule pertains to a force-play situation at any base, regardless of the number of outs.

a. On any force play, the runner must slide on the ground before the base and in a direct line between the two bases. It is permissible for the slider’s momentum to carry him through the base in the baseline extended (see diagram).

Exception—A runner need not slide directly into a base as long as the runner slides or runs in a direction away from the fielder to avoid making contact or altering the play of the fielder. Interference shall not be called.

(1) “On the ground” means either a head-first slide or a slide with one leg and buttock on the ground before the base.

(2) “Directly into a base” means the runner’s entire body (feet, legs, trunk and arms) must stay in a straight line between the bases.

b. Contact with a fielder is legal and interference shall not be called if the runner makes a legal slide directly to the base and in the baseline extended (see diagram).

A.R.—If contact occurs on top of the base as a result of a “pop-up” slide, this contact is legal.

c. Actions by a runner are illegal and interference shall be called if:

(1) The runner slides or runs out of the base line in the direction of the fielder and alters the play of a fielder (with or without contact);

(2) The runner uses a rolling or cross-body slide and either makes contact with or alters the play of a fielder;

(3) The runner’s raised leg makes contact higher than the fielder’s knee when in a standing position;

(4) The runner slashes or kicks the fielder with either leg; or

(5) The runner illegally slides toward or contacts the fielder even if the fielder makes no attempt to throw to complete a play.

PENALTY for 1-5—

(1) With less than two outs, the batter-runner, as well as the interfering runner, shall be declared out and no other runner(s) shall advance.

(2) With two outs, the interfering runner shall be declared out and no other runner(s) shall advance.

(3) If the runner’s slide or collision is flagrant, the runner shall be ejected from the contest.

A.R.—If the bases are loaded with no outs, a double-play attempt is made, and interference is called, all other runners must return to their original bases.

it feels horrrriiblllee if something similar happens to Josh Donaldson.

It almost did on his near concussion. I'm not saying it was dirty but it's an unneeded play

^ Those are two of the best hip checks I have seen, and that includes hockey.

I also have no sympathy for Kang now.

I would also add that if players don't try to break up the double play....they lose the respect of their team-mates. That is a fact.

Too late..Correa has already broken his leg. Though it was sliding into third base.

That was ugly, if they have a rule at home plate, they should at any other base. Utley's playing hard, but that s*** was dirty, period.

I dont understand why infielders haven't started acting in correspondence. You think the base-runner wants to catch a flying knee to the dome? Forget trying to make the play, start sticking your knee/leg out and see how many guys want to break the play up then.

He wasn't trying to hurt him unfortunate but these types of plays will happen every once in awhile. You can't take away the ability to break up double plays. What are they going to do rule an automatic double play. Baseball is trying to get scoring up. Poor positioning didn't help either.

Just watched the video. That's a bush league slide and there should be no place for that in baseball. Even Donaldson's slide in game 1 was pushing if as far as lateness goes, but this was stupid late, off line, cross body slide to a defender who was off balance with his back turned.

Garbage.
