TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Double digit difference from gameday. Not perfect, but it's all I have to look at. according to pitchFX it was 5 balls called strikes for Jays pitchers, and 7 for the Rangers. It also was 6 strikes called balls for the Jays pitchers, and 8 for the Rangers
crmr Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Regardless of whether or not the ump was good/bad, the Jays have been awful. These are the two worst consecutive games they've played since the trade deadline....
beet Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Wasn't really as bad as GameDay made it out to be, but brooks baseball showed the calls favoured the Rangers, especially the inside to RHB. It wasn't the reason on they lost, but it was certainly a factor. http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/zoneTrack.php?&game=gid_2015_10_09_texmlb_tormlb_1/&innings=yyyyyyyyy&month=10&day=09&year=2015 what about low and outside to left hand hitters. We got the benefit of those calls by a wide margin according to that chart.

I was just making note of instances as they came up.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2015 Author Posted October 10, 2015 Grant, what's the story on you disappearing from the bbdl. FYI your team finished 1st in the reg season. I had turned over the team to Spanky for a few weeks, as I do a lot of field work in the summer. I ended up breaking my jaw while working and the message board just kind of dropped from my priority list. Kind of a s***** excuse, but congrats and big thanks to Spanky for making the right moves and winning. I think I had Cutch and Miggy with the lucky lottery picks, too much talent to fail.
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Watching NYM/LAD and these low pitches being called strikes. Then you go back to this god damned crook at the Jays game calling clear strikes a ball.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 This is a billion-dollar business. They're not sending out "bad" umps "by mistake." They're sending out well-trained umps to bring about the desired result. End of story. Wouldn't a Texas/Houston ALCS be boring and bad for ratings?
SAAviour Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Wouldn't a Texas/Houston ALCS be boring and bad for ratings? I sure won't watch it.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 30 years of watching ballgames that was the most inconsistent strike zone I have ever witnessed. Worse than Bob Davidson in the 1990's and that's not an easy feat. Had to register just to get that out of my system.
nextyear Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 One solution would be to extend video replay to balls/strikes. Allow two video replays of balls/strikes per 9 innings.

The inexplicable closing of the roof on two beautiful days is more difficult to explain in my mind. If this were the Twins or Tigers, it's probably open, but he wanted to level the playing field for our home field advantage.

I thought it was the MLB, meaning the commissioner's office.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 This conversation pisses me off. The ump sucked. No doubt. But neither team was happy with him so we need to move on. Bannister made a point in his post game interview of saying he wants his guys to focus on the game and not a bad call by the ump. There is 0 they can do about it. You could see our guys constantly pissed. Some of their guys bitched a bit but let it go. Our Big 5 went 3 for 27 and that's why we lost.

I saw a Texas Ranger player get peeved by a perfect strike in the lower outside corner but I didn't really see Ranger players getting angry about the strike zone throughout the game, in fact most of them were smiling throughout the game. Kevin Pillar gave a good interview yesterday after the game and was very careful in what he said. Obviously, having an inconsistent strike zone is going to have a negative impact on hitters who succeed by having a good eye at the plate. Tulowitzki didn't seem happy with the called strike on him that was shown to be well off the plate inside. Bob Costas said the umpire was having a bad game (he seemed dumbfounded by how bad some calls were). This umpire shouldn't call another game.
nextyear Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 MLB makes it. It's a non issue. Of course it is a non-issue, whether the roof is open or closed didn't affect the outcome. But poor umpiring did.

You can't tell well from where I was sitting on zone. Hurl posted some facts based on zone. I don't think those facts can explain away 3 for 27 if the ump is close to equally bad to both teams.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Charts just don't show it as that badly called. Situations may have been different but he's got a rep as an ump that doesn't like hitters taking with 2 strikes. http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/cache/fastmap.php-pitchSel=all&game=gid_2015_10_09_texmlb_tormlb_1&sp_type=2&s_type=7&cache=1.gif http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/cache/fastmap.php-pitchSel=all&game=gid_2015_10_09_texmlb_tormlb_1&sp_type=3&s_type=7&cache=1.gif

Why is he doing a playoff game?

Shouldn't it be a red square box well outside the strike zone for the RHH chart? The TV broadcast showed an overhead view that showed how far inside it was. I just wonder how these charts are created and how accurate they are?

I know it must be frustrating for the players, but they just have to deal with it and execute. They will bounce back Sunday.

I just wonder how these charts are created and how accurate they are? It is a red triangle at 3.0 vertical and -1.0 horizontal. These are from the umpires view and the triangles are the Texas pitcher pitches. It was not a good call and I will say inside vs. RHH is questionable and went against the Jays. But in comparison low pitches vs. LHH went the Jays way for sure. I had to go through explaining the chart to a friend who insisted they left pitches out. Here is what I made for him...hope it helps

I have a question about it because one ball out of the strike zone that I vividly remember isn't displayed. Why not? You said in another thread that you don't mind having Tulowitzki hit number 5. He went 0 for 6 in game 2, and 0 for 4 in game 1, why do you want him batting #5?

Maybe an AB late in game. If they move him down I'm ok. I'm also ok with Tulo and his decade of track record over a handful of games. Game 1 h hit a couple of balls well into no luck. If he is legit hurting from injury then move him down sure. Edited October 10, 2015 by BigCecil

The Yankees fans thought they were being screwed against the Jays by the umps. At the end of the day, the ump is who the ump is. You have to work around it. The Rangers did. The Jays just bitched after every pitch and tried to rile the fans up (it worked). Ultimately, the team that bitched less won. What a shock. It's sickens me that Jays fans are piling on the umpire in a 14-inning game where they couldn't score a single run after the 5th inning and the Rangers scored only 1 run from the 3rd to the 13th inning. The players/hitters were responsible for this loss.
EMK19 Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 This is the reality of any baseball game, the officiating can seemingly go against you at any given game and it's up to us to adjust accordingly and deal with it. Without a doubt it was inconsistent, but as Martin said, I doubt the guy went out there looking to make unfavourable calls. What concerns me the most is the level of frustrations our players feel about the issue and how those frustrations may be possibly affecting their patience/approach to the plate. We definitely let it get to our heads more than we should have from all those disgusted reactions the players showed after the at bats. I think part of that was the pressure of being the favourites/playing under huge expectations at home. With a day off I hope our players can cool their heads, forget about it, and come back in game 3 with the same good old approach they have been taking throughout the season that enabled them to become the best run-scoring team in the league.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2015 Author Posted October 10, 2015 MLB makes it. It's a non issue. Incorrect. It's our field and our home field advantage. It also has a fairly significant effect on the outcome of the game, as we saw last night.
