Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2024 Posted January 29, 2024 I'm seeing this narrative a lot. What's the concern with this guy? Shape on his fastball? Yes, same issue as Hunter Greene. You would think MLB coaching / Driveline would address this with a few tweaks.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 29, 2024 Posted January 29, 2024 Yes, same issue as Hunter Greene. You would think MLB coaching / Driveline would address this with a few tweaks. Hard to change prevailing FB shape. That's kind of just a function of arm slot and genetics (finger size, grip, etc.) But coaching and tweaks definitely can help him find the ideal shape given his tendencies, and the ideal mix of FB varieties

For me I just see plenty of bats that should be higher than Skenes, it's not egregious or anything. Yes on the latter a bit but it's still a plus pitch and can be developed still as these guys have noted. He's still likely a stud.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Ahead of Caminero? That's pretty bold. Can't really justify him being at 3 myself. I do think he belongs in the top 15 however.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Pretty interesting that Langford and Crews have been side-by-side on both of the big lists so far.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 MLB Pipeline always seems to have recent draftees ranked higher than most. All of them do it, then adjust accordingly. Makes sense.

Kiley McDaniel's top 100 ranking is on there... he has lots of info on there. https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/insider/story/_/id/39420988/top-100-mlb-prospects-list-2024-kiley-mcdaniel-jackson-holliday-jackson-chourio I don't have ESPN+ but it seems to work for me. He has us ranked 24th, geez... 24. Toronto Blue Jays ($126 million) Last year: 22nd, $152 million Top 100 prospects: 1 The Jays are ranked here for now as their top two prospects -- left-handed pitcher Ricky Tiedemann and third baseman Orelvis Martinez -- add up to $57 million in prospect value but will likely both graduate over the summer, taking Toronto into contention for the worst farm system in baseball if there aren't big improvements. The Jays do have two upside prep picks in left-handed pitcher Brandon Barriera and shortstop Arjun Nimmala along with a recent international signee in outfielder Enmanuel Bonilla that may be a solid prospect as well, but outside of those three this system has a lot of contact-first, lower-impact hitters and solid depth pitchers rather than potential impact players.

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 It's okay, Kiley is kind of dumb (he's the new Keith Law) and that's not even bottom 5 so we technically do not have a bottom 5 farm anyway, even if it is per this dumbass

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Would Joey Ortiz be our like… fourth best prospect? Maybe top 3

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Would Joey Ortiz be our like… fourth best prospect? Maybe top 3 Oof, that's kind of depressing lol
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 4 or 5. Oh I don’t think he’d be fifth he’s closer to two than five
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Oof, that's kind of depressing lol Sort of illustrates the current state of the system. Tiedemann clearly better but you could definitely rank Ortiz over Orelvis and Arjun

Not impressed with Kiley's work. He was considered the better of the Kiley/Longenhagen duo at FG, but Longen clearly better IMO.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Are you referring to the prospect list or farm ranks? everything, really Kiley has been meh since he left FG
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 BA - 24th ESPN- 24th Fangraphs- 23rd You don’t have to agree but the industry views the system as bottom third, and is heavily propped up by Rick T

I wonder if that 23-24th range is closely grouped with 15th or so? And there's a clear drop-off when you get to the bottom 3-5? Idk trying to find some silver linings here.

I can only hope that the system looks a little better after the second half as so many of the prospects had poor first halves.

I’m guessing but I’d say they’re the first team in the second worst tier of farm systems, and closer to the worst farm than average There’s just no impact guys to dream on outside of Tiedemann. Arjun probably next in line in terms of ceiling
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Idk maybe Fantrax isn’t updated but BA has rankings
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Oh they did the rankings for BA today... 24. Toronto Blue Jays Top 100 Prospects (2): LHP Ricky Tiedemann (22), SS Orelvis Martinez (90) The 2023 season was a step back for Toronto’s farm because many 2022 draft picks struggled. Dominican slugger Orelvis Martinez was a rare bright spot, but much of the system’s strength is reliant on top prospect LHP Ricky Tiedemann—who possesses elite upside and pure stuff but also has significant health and durability questions. See their Top 30 Prospects entering 2024 Previous ranks 2023: 15 2022: 19 2021: 4 2020: 6 2019: 3
Johnny King Vancouver Canadians - A+ LHP The 19-year-old top prospect has made 16 High-A starts. He is 3-2 with a 2.92 ERA. In 61 2/3 innings, he's walked 35, but he's struck out 83 batters. Explore Johnny King News >
