Blue Jays: Hagen Danner, RHP

 

We dropped Danner out of the Blue Jays’ Top 30 list after he missed much of the season with a lat injury, but the Fall League is a perfect time for him to make up for the lost innings. Danner could be one of the best stories at this year’s AFL. He was selected in the second round as a catcher in 2017, played three seasons behind the dish and transitioned to the mound in 2021, when he sat in the mid-90s, touched 100 and showed an above-average slider. Already on the 40-man, Danner could use his time in Arizona to vault himself into Toronto’s bullpen consideration for 2023.

September 1st has never been a cutoff for rookie status as far as I know, but previously may not have counted towards service time accumulation for September callups.

 

It used to be, when September Rosters were 40, that the service time did not count towards Rookie qualification. Moreno only has 60 at bats, so did not lose Rookie status because of at bats, he only had 30 days service in his first stint, and now 15 or 20 in his second stint, so he must of lost rookie status because of service time. They must have changed the rule, September service time counts now I guess.

 

Jays system will be super-under-rated as they don't have like the classical "Baseball America loved them the moment they signed and they hit the f*** out of the ball at 21" guy, but all kinds of interesting players.

 

For example 5 players in the upper minors who could be ready to contribute very soon, may be good, but won't be on major lists.

 

Moreno - played 90 milb games last 2 years, and lost his rookie status because of a cup of coffee and sitting around in September. No one will know he exists anymore but was a top 5 overall 2 weeks ago.

Martinez - hit .200 which may have been fluke and he's a still a .250 hitter, but everyone will drop him

Gabriel Martinez - will be behind Toman in the rankings but hit great for a 19 year old

Barger - Who? No one seems to care about him much for a 22 year old who had the best hitting year in the system, and plays up the middle.

Otto Lopez - Maybe an Espinal clone but doing same things at younger age? Everyone will say he won't be anything, but they said the same about Espinal (and maybe Espinal in the end won't be anything, but did anyone even think he'd have 2 WAR years?).

That Stroman trade in hindsight looks pretty bad. He was a solid/reliable/durable pitcher with 1.5 years left and we got almost nothing for him.

In hindsight sure, but we weren't competing at the time, and SWR and Kay were highly touted, plus we got Berrios. Wasn't a bad trade at the time.

I hate that Anthony Kay has done absolutely nothing. Just org fodder. Lefty that throws 95 but he’s useless

The return was light at the time. Kay was an older prospect and SWR was so young that we had to hope he was acquired pre-breakout. To be fair, it did look for a while that the Jays did in fact get SWR pre-breakout, so the deal started to look better afterwards, but hindsight is now matching what many felt at the time. The fact that the main part of that trade (SWR) + the 5th pick in the following draft were traded for a pitcher pretty much on the same level as Stroman kind of makes it worse now, except Stroman is signed to a much better contract. Of course, Berrios could always bounce back next season and resemble the 3-4 WAR starter that he normally is, but year 1 of 7 hasn't been good.

Yeah they turned SWR into Berrios, who is younger and better than Stroman IMO as well.

1B: Spencer Horwitz, Toronto

 

Horwitz remains a sleeper, in part, due to his lack of physical stature at first base. He has an above-average-to-plus hit tool, however, the lack of power projection will keep down on industry lists. He racked up only 12 homers this year, but did manage to hit 33 doubles in the process. At 24 already, he’s on the verge of a major league call up to Toronto. If you need a hit-first 1B, not all that different than former Blue Jay John Olerud, then give him a look.

Hagen Danner, RHP, Blue Jays: After converting to pitching full time prior to the 2020 pandemic shutdown, Danner has since developed into one of the better power relievers in the Blue Jays system. Yesterday Danner was electric in his inning of work, as he struck out two of the three batters he faced while working a clean seventh for Salt River. Danner sat in the high 90s on his fastball and broke off a few mid-to-high-70s breaking balls with late dump. If Danner can stay healthy he has a legitimate shot to make the Blue Jays bullpen next summer.
