Another knee slapper from the bleedin’ tick

What's going on with Martin? All I see is groundout after groundout besides the walks.

Yeah, he seems to be puttering out while Groshans, meanwhile, is on tear.

Sounds like he has a slapstick approach right now and hasn't figured out how to turn on pro pitching.

You know, Martin is still quite young and young for AA. He's only like 8 months older than Groshans and 11 months older than Moreno so they are all in the same peer group. And his junior year was 75% wiped out by Covid so it's not like having gone to College really gives him any sort of developmental leg up.

Veen will have a better career then Martin.

Veen is in a dog s*** organization for developing prospects though.

That's a five star play, and a lot of brains to bounce the throw on purpose

Adams was 4 for 5 tonight with a double and a home run.

OPS up to .877

Nice to see, I was wondering if that cup of coffee in the MLB shook him, he's still a decent asset. I hope he doesn't end up a AAAA guy.

2 doubles for Orelvis so far

His offensive explosion is surprisingly not the best story of the minor leagues for a club that has a ton of them. I think first place goes to Moreno's massive AA performance, he very well may have rocketed up to the major leagues this season if he were to keep it up. Other noteworthy performances include Manoah manhandling AAA hitters and MLB hitters in the spring, Samad Taylor muscling up and adding big time power in AA, and finally Kevin Smith seemingly resurrecting his career and reaching new heights with his performance in AAA.

Unfortunately there have been some big disappointments as well. At the top I rank Moreno having his hand broken, closely followed by Pearson losing another year of starters experience by missing most of another season due to injury.

lol... dude, it was 30 PA?

He certainly needs to cut the k's down if he wants any chance for an MLB career. I thought he looked pretty decent defensively at least, so at first I though Adams might turn into a Mike Zunino slugging catcher. But then I compared Adam's and Zunino's strikeout numbers, and discovered that Adam's minor league strikeout numbers are as bad as Zunino's MLB strikeout numbers.

The hit tool and K% is really his only flaws, that's why I mentioned him as a 4A guy in the post prior. Tough to say yet, hence the 30 PA's comment.

For what it's worth projections system having him bouncing back into the mid 60's for WRC, but I don't see a realistic path to him receiving over 100 more plate appearances unless two Jays catchers go down for most of the rest of the season.

Obviously the bar for hitting for a catcher isn’t very high, so he definitely should be a major leaguer, I think. Even if it’s just as a back up. For us, though, he’s clearly a ways down the depth chart given some of our other catching prospects.

Yeah, no doubt. A good asset to trade as well in a package deal.

I'm not talking this season, he has options, he can stay down in Buffalo and rake. Call him up in emergency depth.

I think that's what the front office will eventually decide to do with Adams. Right now he might actually be more useful as a depth piece, if Kirk or McGuire were to get hurt we would be left with Juan Graterol getting regular starts.

True, depends on the severity of Jansen's injury I guess. Soft tissue injuries are the worst.

Definitely agree on the soft tissue injuries. I've had my share of those and it's a nightmare to deal with as they are so easy to aggravate and set yourself nearly back to square one.

bk: Dan, I’m curious to learn more about how ZiPS views Kevin Smith long term after seeing your Jays/Cubs trade proposal.

12:31

Dan Szymborski: Sees him with a really good shot at peaking as a 3 WAR guy. He’s a bit old of a prospect at this point.

That's a pretty nice projection on a guy having a bounceback year in the minors. It's definitely past the point where he's deserving of a call-up so I wonder if they're committed to making a deal and Smith is the most likely piece to be included in any kind of deal.

That's what BNS and Zwelling were talking about recently on their podcast, mentioning a fit for a deal with the Pirates surrounding Smith and Rodriguez.

Deserving of a call-up, sure, but there are only 26 spots available on the MLB team, and he's also not on the 40 man roster, and because of all the people we have on the 60 day IL right now, the limited dead weight on the 40 man will have to be cut for (some of) those returning players.

Logistically, there's no room for Smith at the moment (barring a trade in which he's not involved.)
