Ray Verified Member Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 Veen > Martin Maybe, but there's no way you take him over a .400/.500./600 hitter in one of the top college programs and in the SEC who also plays up the middle on draft day. Martin will be fine. He's getting adjusted in pro-ball against AA competition after almost a year of not playing baseball competitively and still has a near .800 OPS.

Jays would have been crucified, and justifiably so, had they passed on Martin and taken Veen.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 Completely agree. Jays would have been crucified, and justifiably so, had they passed on Martin and taken Veen. Of course the risk with Veen is much higher, even now that he's playing in single A, but Martin did have concerns regarding his power on draft day and it's mildly concerning that it's continuing now.

I don't disagree. I would like to see more power displayed in the second half from Martin. Veen was a guy that had a very high ceiling, and the Rockies making a him a top 10 pick was not overslot in my opinion. He had a ton of helium heading into the draft if I recall. Having said that, Martin was a consensus no. 2, with some industry experts having him no. 1 on their board. No one expected him to fall to the Jays. It was the right pick on draft day to make.

Trump supporters either: 1) don’t have the money to pay 2) don’t have the character to keep their word. Or, usually 3) both.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 OK, this has run its course. Back to prospect talk plz.

Although I shouldn't lol Yeah that was never a worry as I didn’t have the passion for that. Think of a little kid that wants a toy really bad and then he gets said toy and doesn’t want it anymore. That’s me

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 This was on the prospect hot sheet. 1. Orelvis Martinez, SS, Blue Jays Team: Low-A Dunedin (Southeast) Age: 19 Why He’s Here: .500/.563/1.357 (14-for-28), 10 R, 3 2B, 0 3B, 7 HR, 16 RBIs, 3 BB, 6 SO The Scoop: Martinez is one of the most gifted prospects in Toronto’s system, and he showed a very loud glimpse at his potential this past week. He entered the week with eight home runs and closed it with 15. The cherry on top was a three-homer game on July 17. His three homers that day had exit velocities of 100 mph or better. (JC) 9. Kevin Smith, SS, Blue Jays Team: Triple-A Buffalo (East) Age: 25 Why He’s Here: .500/.538/1.042 (12-for-24), 5 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 9 RBIs, 2 BB, 5 SO. The Scoop: One of the breakout stars in 2018, Smith’s 2019 season quickly fell apart and the canceled 2020 season meant he didn’t get to prove that his 2018 dominance was more his speed than the 2019 struggles. But here he is halfway through 2021 and his Triple-A numbers look a lot like they did when he was bashing home runs in 2018. Smith is tied for third in the Triple-A East with 15 home runs and is fourth in slugging (.583). (JC)
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Man, Kevin Smith at 25 years old with his first crack at AAA and a 149 wRC+ is no joke is he? 12.5% BB rate, 24.3% K rate, and a .298 ISO are all good signs too. Not a flash in the pan either really, it's been more good than bad all the way up the ladder too. Speed, power, glove. I hope we get a look at him soon.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Didn't Smith try to change his swing one off-season and he completely imploded? Yes in 2019 he tried to make a swing change and it didn't work at all. He had a hige 2018 with a 190 wRC+ in A ball and then after being promoted to high A put up 127 wRC+ Went to AA in 2019 with an altered swing and his K rates ballooned and his wRC+ dropped to 94.
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Didn't Smith try to change his swing one off-season and he completely imploded? Ya, after 2018 when he had his last good season heading into AA in 2019. A case of dont fix what aint broken with him.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Didn't Smith try to change his swing one off-season and he completely imploded? Yeah it seems like that is what led to the disastrous 2019 season. He said he really likes to tinker with his swing, but the changes he made that year were hard to undo and he was a mess with trying to revert to his prior swing. It's looking more and more like the 2019 season is the outlier in an otherwise solid minor league career. The addition to his walk rate is the thing that's most encouraging to me, he's never walked at a pace like this previously, and he's also trimmed his strikeout rate to a more manageable level as well.
John Balkabella Verified Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 In the FCL, Dunedin's Rainer Nunez is 5 for 5 with a 2B, 2 HR's and 6 steaks, games' still going, lol. Follows it up with a three for four with two doubles.
Ray Verified Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 I didn't mind trading Griffin Conine I just wish it weren't for 22 games of Jonathan Villar.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 I just saw Casas’ stance for the first time. He stance is super wide. Kind of a weird load. Obviously works for him
Ray Verified Member Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Bowden Francis (ranked 5th in the list) is the guy we got in the Tellez trade: Also, this article profiles him more: https://www.trentonian.com/sports/ex-brewers-prospect-bowden-francis-debuts-with-five-innings-as-bisons-beat-ironpigs/article_bbe59996-e4fc-11eb-b1f2-7f0155039555.html From the article: "Francis added a hard slider to his arsenal this year and now features four pitches, along with his mid-90s fastball, curveball and changeup." So mid 90's fastball with high spin, newly added slider, good minor league results with high K-rates (this season anyways). Did we maybe just get another Thomas Hatch for Rowdy Tellez?
Ray Verified Member Posted July 21, 2021 Posted July 21, 2021 (edited) Bowden Francis through 6 no-hit innings. 6K’s, 2 walks, 81 pitches. Edit: Broken up in the 7th with a homer. Final line: 7IP, 1ER, 2BB, 7K, 92 pitches Edited July 21, 2021 by Ray
