I bet if the Blue Jays challenged him that if he wants to stay at third base he needs to get in better shape he would do it. Hes 18 he has a lot of time to turn his body type around if he wants to.

Agreed. They've revamped the catering as well, so players should have access to more ideal nutrician.

Boys Vlad is always gonna be thick AF. There's no way around it. What they will do from a conditioning standpoint is make sure he's strong and moving efficiently to minimize injury risk. I'd rather have him taking hacks than worrying about his aestethics.

Even if his body trended in the direction of Fielder (which seems unlikely to THAT degree), his bat is probably projecting similar atm and he would likely be better defensively. That's still 200+ home runs, close to a .300 average, and at least 20 something WAR before he hits free agency. As long as we didn't extend him, we'd come out way on top. Hopefully he keeps the weight under control and blows that out of the water :)

I'm hoping for Miguel Cabrera, as extremely unlikely as that may be.

Same. Scouts don't throw around projections like Miggy Cabrera and Manny Ramirez lightly and he has an 80 hit tool. I think there's no need to slash his projections at this point. Fielder is probably his low floor.

I think we're getting a bit carried away throwing Prince Fielder floors on a 19-year old fat kid TBH.

Fielder was really good in his prime. That as his floor is extremely unrealistic.

You heard it here first folks! If Vlad isn't Pujols, we will all be really disappointed, shrug and have to be content with Prince Fielder. We'd be so hard done by

I for one will not be content to settle for 150+ wRC+ seasons with 50+ dingers.

I just want him to stay fit enough that he can play an acceptable 3B or corner OF

Don't him moved to 1B if they can help it

I think that ship has pretty much sailed. I'm just hoping he can play an acceptable 1B until his mid-20s before being turned into a DH.

lol, I love Vlad. There's every reason to think he has as good a chance as any prospect to be the next Ortiz/Pujols/Miggy.

The Padres have been aggressive, letting him make his pro debut in full-season Class A and playing him in Double-A last season as a teenager. He has responded to every challenge. He is the best pure hitter in the minor leagues. Despite being much younger than his opposition, he has batted .329 as a pro. More impressive, he has walked more times (135) than he has struck out (107). He has a tremendous understanding of the strike zone, reaching base in 57 consecutive games in 1999-2000. He'll be an above-average power hitter at the major league level. It's typical for young lefthanded hitters to drive the ball to the middle of the ballpark, with home run power the last thing to develop. He has the bat speed and the approach to drive the ball out of the park as he gets more experience and learns to turn on pitches. He's not a one-dimensional player, either. He has above-average arm strength and hands at third base. He improved his footwork in 2000, cutting down his errors to 16 after making 37 the year before. Power is his most obvious shortcoming at this point, but it will come. He is as close to an 80 hit tool as we have seen. The only thing he's not going to do as a big leaguer is impress anyone with his speed on the bases. He has been caught stealing in 24 of his 47 pro attempts. There has been talk that if the Padres trade Phil Nevin, their most marketable major leaguer, then he could be their Opening Day starter at the hot corner. While he probably wouldn't be scarred by the experience, also isn't ready to offer big league power for his position. He'll be better off spending most of the year at Triple-A Portland. Regardless, he's a future batting champion and an all-star for years to come.

A cautionary tale

I get it. No prospect, no matter how highly touted, is at all LIKELY to have a hall of fame career.

But Vlad has a better chance than most and he has a GOOD chance to be at least a good MLB hitter

And he has a chance to stick at 3B/corner OF
