Melvin Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Teoscar Hernandez comes in at #5 in the updated Top 30 Jays prospect list: http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2017?list=tor Farm is looking really good. Eddy O should definitely be on that list.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 They put Pannone at #21, lets be honest these two guys are lottery tickets but you really couldn't expect more. Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45 A 33rd-round pick by the Cubs in 2012 out of the Rhode Island prep ranks, Pannone was a two-way player at the JC of Southern Nevada in 2013 before signing with the Indians for $120,000 as a ninth-rounder. He took off after making some delivery adjustments last year, and then continued to climb the ladder in 2017, moving up to Double-A and becoming an Eastern League All-Star. Pannone's progress caught the eye of the Blue Jays, who acquired him and second baseman Samad Taylor for Joe Smith at the Trade Deadline. Pannone can run his fastball up to 92-93 mph but usually sits more in the 88-91 mph range. Though not overpowering, Pannone's heater plays above its velocity on account of his deception, allowing him to induce whiffs inside the zone. He has good feel for his curveball, showing the ability to throw it for a strike and also bury it in the dirt when vying for whiffs, and he's adept at adding and subtracting with the pitch as needed. His changeup gives him a third average-or-better offering, albeit one he uses sparingly, and he has good command of all three pitches. Because he lacks a plus pitch and thrives based on deception, Pannone will have to prove himself at each level. He has handled every challenge so far, and while he's not a top-tier prospect, the left-hander has a legitimate floor as a backend starter in the Major Leagues.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 legitimate floor as a backend starter in the Major Leagues. I'll take that any day of the week as the return for Joe Smith.

Seems like he deserves a look in Sept. if he continues to produce in Buffalo.

Seems like he deserves a look in Sept. if he continues to produce in Buffalo. No kidding. For a guy who was brought in with no thought of being anything other than rookie ball roster filler, the fact that he's still a starter, at AAA, after serving 2 years in the armed forces and with all that development time lost... is amazing.

Kid is an absolute monster. Vlady Jr. with a nice game too, he seems to be starting to heat back up. Gotta love this!
Cbert Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Anyone know much about this Ryan Gold kid in Bluefield? Catcher hitting around .300 with a .370OBP and is 19years old which seems age appropriate for the level. He seems to have a high BABIP, so I can't figure out if he's been lucky in his first two seasons or he's just squaring up the ball for hard singles. Anyone know anything about his defense and if he could be a legit prospect?

I think there's some talent in there with Gold, but I don't put much credence in what a player does until he gets to full season ball.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Longenhagen ranked the prospects traded during the deadline season: 45 FV Prospects 10. Teoscar Hernandez, OF, TOR (Acquired for Francisco Liriano) Hernandez simplified his footwork in the box and took off last year, but there was nowhere for him to fit into Houston’s outfield. His natural bat speed and wrist strength generate the quality of his contact. He projects as an average hitter with average game power. If he can play center field (most scouts think he can) he’s an average everyday player. In a corner he’s a second division regular unless his glove buoys his overall value. 40 FV Prospects and below 33. Samad Taylor, 2B, TOR (Acquired from CLE for Joe Smith) A twitchy and athletic plus-plus runner without prototypical shortstop arm strength, Taylor has an intriguing blend of physical tools and early-career performance. Scouts are concerned about his lack of size, but he does have some pop. He’ll need it to profile at second. 44. Thomas Pannone, LHP, TOR (Acquired from CLE for Joe Smith) Pannone is throwing a bit harder this year and sitting 88-91. He sequences it well, changing hitters’ eye level with it and a loopy curveball. Scouts are skeptical of his stuff playing in the majors long-term, but he has a FIP under 3 at Double-A right now.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 (edited) And from the chat: 12:33 Pearced: Thoughts on Pannone? Solid back end starter? 12:33 Eric A Longenhagen: That’s probably his ceiling. Not sure how that fastball will play in the big leagues. 12:34 Joe Schlmo: Teoscar Hernandez a solid regular next year? 12:34 Eric A Longenhagen: I think so. Has hit well since finding footwork he was comfortable with in the box. 12:41 Big Tuna: Which prospect improved their value the most at the deadline? (either by trade or trade of competition) 12:42 Eric A Longenhagen: Probably Teoscar, who gets a shot to play more regularly now. 12:45 Erix: Do you have Connor Greene thoughts? 12:45 Eric A Longenhagen: 70 fastball. I think that’s kind of it. 1:14 PF: What do you make of the Blue Jays’ business this trade deadline? Pannone seems really interesting by the stat line scouting no? 1:15 Eric A Longenhagen: He does, but the guy I think is very interesting is Samad Taylor. 70 runner, premium athlete, sneaky raw power for his size. 1:24 PF: Best prospect traded at the deadline that no one’ stalking about? 1:24 Eric A Longenhagen: Luis Madero, Taylor and Myers are the ones I think are fun sleepers in this year’s group. Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Author Posted August 1, 2017 Not high on Pannone. I'm a big stuff guy...and Pannone doesn't have it, or at least not enough of it for my liking.

If he continues to pitch well he might be a guy we can flip for more later. We might also have a back of the rotation need.
Ray Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 Pannones scouting grades according to MLB.com are very interesting: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45 Despite projecting as above average in every category, his overall projected future value is still 45. At the very least, Pannone and Taylor seems like intriguing lottery tickets. I'm more than happy we were able to land not 1, but 2 interesting prospects for half a season of Joe Smith.

His name is Joe Smith but he was a top 10 reliever before getting hurt. They should have been able to get something good either way.

The Cubs were willing to move Candelario for a reliever. The Astros gave up Teoscar for Liriano and cash and they seem to seem him as a reliever. By those standards the return for Smith is pretty light on paper. Seems like Shatkins wanted to accomodate the player and also use inside knowledge of the Indians system to target potentially undervalued players.

Yes I suspect Pannone may have more potential than the 'rankings' would suggest. If nothing else, maybe he can be a successful lefty reliever. Smith has previous history with Shapiro and the Indians between 2009 and 2013. He already suggested in an interview post trade that a return to the Jays in 2018 is a possibility. Trading Smith to the Indians during this difficult time with his mother's unfortunate situation is great for the Jays in building some goodwill among the MLB player fraternity.

When we traded for Mark Lowe, we gave up Rob Rasmussen, Jacob Brentz, and Nick Wells, and Lowe was having a better season compared to Smith. There's only so much you can get for a non-elite rental reliever coming off injury. I don't think the return is all that light.
