Cool. I've got family in Ames. I've always loved Iowa.

Welcome back man. Matts having a great year, we've talked about him a little bit would love to see him get the call. Only one step away now!

What kind of velocity does he have?

Posted

I know Ames well - graduated from Iowa State.

A little on Matt (my nephew): You are correct on the velocity - sits 89-92. A few times announcers have said he has touched 94 when watching games, but I have a feeling every stadium gun is going to be a little different. He has lived mainly fastball/slider but has also thrown his change-up sparingly. His command has always been his strength - at every level his K/BB numbers have always been good. They challenged him during spring training to focus on getting lefties out, which he has done pretty well.

Obviously he has never been high on the prospect list, but nothing really surprises me with him. He is an extremely humble and hard-working kid. If it ever happens for it him it will truly be deserved - relentless work ethic and has never let the ups and downs of the minors getting him down.

I just hope his slider is effective enough to get swings and misses (looks like it on the peripherals) to make it as a LOOGY in the pen going forward.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but here's a fresh scouting report on Jon Harris:

Body: Tall, angular frame w/lanky appearance. Long, wiry limbs w/ flat chest across upper-half. Will always be lean, though he holds velocity into outings fine.

Delivery: Full windup w/over-head break. Fairly easy out front, occasional modest fall-off to glove-side that looks like it can be cleaned up in time. Starter look overall.

Arm Action: Arm works well through a nearly overhand slot; smooth, easy, fluid finish to arm-stroke out front.

95

Fluid, smooth arm-stroke generates easy velocity. FB touches 95, sits 92-93 w/ some arm-side run. Easy arm out front jumps ball on hitters. Velocity plays down at present b/c of command within the zone; chance to be true 60 offering w/ projected improvements to pitching to spots w/ FB.

Command: Stayed around the zone w/ more control than true command. Long arm in the back holds up command at present, though can be improved. Enough ability to get ahead w/ FB to start.

55

88-89

91

Hybrid pitch that works well against RHH; late, darting glove-side action at best. Somewhere between cutter and slider, more SL depth at lower velo band, w/ one-plane cut-type action at 89-91.

89

Hard 2-seam action on firm splitter 86-89. Sells the pitch at arm-speed at best, pulling the string well for solid arm-side turnover action. Overthrows it a little right now, velocity runs into FB somewhat; might need to push his grip farther back in his hand to take more off the pitch. Thrown mostly to LHH.

79-82

83

True overhand CB 79-83. Tunnels the pitch well off FB; best CBs show late, w/darting 12-6 action. Thrown to both RHH/LHH; still getting consistent feel for maintaining arm-speed and finish pitch w/conviction. Worst ones show early w/ softer, rolling tilt.

Control

50

55

Fairly advanced control and ability to limit walks, confidently utilizing a full four-pitch mix. Control stands to potentially improve a half grade as his arm-circle shortens, which will allow better location w/ FB and CB. Cutter/Slider and Splitter reliably around zone; strikes w/ CB the least developed at present, w/ more feel to expand the zone down than get ahead w/ breaking ball earlier in counts.

Overall

High-floor arm with little left to prove in Low-A. Might not have a dominant pitch at the end of the day, but knows how to mix four pitches and stays around the zone w/ starter's delivery and FB that touches the mid-90s. Ceiling is that of a lesser no. 3 starter if command takes half-grade step forward, and he can get more velocity separation from his FB on secondary pitches. Chance top 100 prospect who could reach Toronto in the next 18 months.

Is velocity separation between fastball and off-speed stuff still a thing? Felix and his 90 mph change are pretty effective. Aren't other aspects of the pitch like infinitely more important?

Felix and his 90 MPH change? Dude, that's his fastball now.

Have to incorporate movement into that too. A straight change, like Estrada has, has to have the 10mph separation because it relies on the hitter to swing early. However, when you're looking at a splitter, it's not as critical as the main difference is the drop the pitch has, and you're looking for batters to swing over it, rather than ahead of it. Separation helps, but it's not always critical.

Carlos Carrasco is a better example.

Carrasco's is also a Splitter/Change mix which gives it much more movement.

Justin Maeses last outing is on youtube. Worth a watch

Nice.

Wasn't watching super closely, but what I'm noticing is that he has nice run on his 2-seamer. Worked the corners very well.

He could really use a breaking ball. He does throw a cutter/slider which has a bit of a break but but I think he needs to work on something with a bit more break for a different look. They mentioned that he was at 91 with that slider/cutter on one pitch so I'm leaning to it being a cutter. There were a few pitches that may have been changeups, but they announcers were saying FB and with no velecity numbers on the TV it was hard to know for sure. FB was 93-95 for the first three innings.

Lots of things to like, but lots of work to do.

He throws a slider at 86/87.

Didn't see much of it. Or if he did throw it either I missed it, or it doesn't have a big break so it wasn't impressive.

One other thing. Holy s*** does Lizardo have an arm on him. I've read that he has a great arm, but seeing it an action is impressive.

Edit: Just saw him throw a slider and strike someone out. Average. Good location though.

He needs to add another swing + miss pitch. Easy to see why he put up a K/9 of 4.79 in the GCL last year and 6.78 K/9 in Vancouver this season. You can survive at the lower levels of the minors with the sinker he has, just mixing up the location. They just hammer it into the ground.

Yup. He's young. That can come. The command looks really good so that's a huge plus for him. Needs more depth on the SL.

His MLB Pipeline profile, says similiar things.

Though he can hit the mid 90s, Maese works more in the 90-93 mph range with his fastball and already displays feel for pitching to both sides of the plate. His heater is more dynamic than the velocity suggests, too, as his fast arm and low three-quarters slot give it excellent sinking action that generates a ton of ground balls. The slider is relatively new to his arsenal but shows the makings of a second plus pitch, and his changeup is understandably raw due to a lack of experience.

Maese's athleticism is obvious on the mound, and it's easy to envision him growing into his projectable frame in the coming years. His outstanding sinker should keep the door open for him as a starter and reliever, but he'll need to refine his slider, develop a changeup and refine his control and command to stick in the rotation.

Posted

He throws a pitch at 30:35 that has some decent depth but he definitely needs to develop a better breaking ball.

I don't want to go full Thanos but he could throw a few more 4-seamers too, I think.

Well if we can't make moves to the big club or will not be making nothing but minor moves at best it appears.

Let's reshape the minors and push out the old and promote the youth up!!!

Let's start the ball rolling... What you do with those outed I don't really care trade them Trade them, release them or move them down to help lower levels out like a player coach, if you can get a bag of balls for them even better!!!

So let's Start.... Buffalo INF, Adams

Casilla and Kotchman out.

Berti, Leblebijian and Tellez up.

One or two of Castillo Hurado or Shanchez out ... Lavarnway up.

Outfield one of Brown or Mesa out

Or Both??

Parmley and Smith jr up ???

Pitchers not sure yet as the starters are old but AA is well kinda a Baren waste land too!

only two from triple AA that should maybe be pushed up still are RP

Barnes and Browning

Who you moving up and out???

So anyone care to discuss this, any moves you would make? Promote demote and or release ?

I did and will post moves to pitching shortly....

I will not lie or do I claim to be a expert but rather would like to see the dicussion of the pros and cons from

The BJMB and what we're thinking on

Them, and the positional moves above. Thanks 🤔

Scott: How close was Jose DeLeon to making the list? Are there injury concerns based on the past few months or is the upside not as high as the others on the list?

Klaw: Just don’t see the upside. Great makeup, good feel to pitch, but there’s a lack of a swing-and-miss weapon there.

How do you post these K Rates in the minors without a "swing and miss weapon"? God damnit Keith

http://i.imgur.com/F5qwsxr.png

And his Swinging Strike % in AA this year was 14.6%, in AAA its 14.1%.

Bryan: Rowdy Tellez is tearing up AA of late as a 21 year old. Can he possibly become a league average 1b/DH in MLB? I believe I recall you saying he has a “long swing”–will that prevent him from reaching the big leagues?

Klaw: No. Can’t hit quality pitching.

Once again, How do you put up a 150 wRC+ in AA without being able to hit quality pitching? Holy f***!

Brad Mills could strike out a batter an inning in the minors too. And on the other hand Sanchez could not.

Stuff and results don't always mesh in the minors
