burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Trout is down to 170 and Donaldson is up to 161. Someone check at 3:30 AM! Donaldson 7.1 WAR Trout 6.8
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Lol not even close. Pujols last 3 years combined sub .800 ops. He averaged over 1.000 ops before that. I bet your rebuttal will involve" but 33 homerz" No my rebuttal involves Pujols hitting in the AL West while Bautista hitting in the AL East. Pujols WRC is only about 6 points behind Bautista, and thats despite playing in Anaheim, Oakland and Seattle. Pujols hits in an one of the worst place possible for a hitter.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 You can just change the "Split" field on the leaderboard to "Live Stats - Full Season" http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2015&month=33&season1=2015&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 Bryce Harper just a few hundredths of a win ahead of Donaldson for most in the league. Not that such a small difference should be given meaning, just that it would be fun seeing Donaldson on top. Man, if he keeps it up he might make it a laugher. The guys he's against are flipping good for MLB overall. Go JD.

You have a good point, but it holds little merit. And yes, I said this to Robert, wow!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Donaldson 7.1 WAR Trout 6.8 That has flipped in two days, the other way around. We'll see as it rolls out, JD's been a boss!

It's doesn't change the fact that he's in steep decline, or the fact that Donaldson has Bautista Edwin Martin hitting after him. My point still stands, pitchers have to pitch to JD, whereas Trout gets less to hit with the s*** that follows him.

JD admitted this tonight, he said he just needs to stay in his game because he has Bautista and Eddy behind him...Facts!

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 JD has got to be the front runner now. Not because he hands-down deserves it but because his traditional stats are getting ridiculous and dinosaurs rule the earth.

Statman Verified Member Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Isn't wRC+ park adjusted? It certainly is.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 It certainly is. O.K. so the argument that Puljos's wRC+ is worth more than Bautista's because of where they play is bogus.

nextyear Verified Member Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 I am not a big Don Cherry fan but I saw this interesting article about Don Cherry trolling Gregg Zaun on Twitter - http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/cherry-defends-donaldson-for-mvp-trolls-zaun-on-twitter/ . Who would have known that Don Cherry uses social media; I figured that he was completely old school but Cherry even mentioned WAR and OPS in his tweets. I saw this old 2013 article about Gregg Zaun - http://www.torontosun.com/2013/07/01/zaun-making-being-canadian-a-full-time-job. It seems like he might eventually become a Canadian citizen, so I can forgive him for his mistaken idea that Trout was a better MVP candidate than Donaldson for 2015; especially now that Zaun has changed his mind. Gregg Zaun has even started playing hockey goalie - http://www.brantnews.com/photogallery/4122148 http://media.zuza.com/e/c/ec9363df-cff6-47a6-8ce3-19094c4d6f8e/s-r-Zaun_Goal1___Gallery.jpg

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Out of curiosity, how much does 1st or 2nd place MVP affect arbitration hearings? That's up to the arbitrator but its definitely in the favour of the player. Remember if something goes to arbitration then the player just has to be able to convince the arbitrator that he's worth more than the midpoint between the number he submitted and the number the team submitted. The arbitrator doesn't actually decide a dollar value between numbers, just decides whether the players number or the teams number gets used. Like if Donaldson said he's worth 12 million, and the Jays say he's worth ... 8. Then all Donaldson would have to prove is that hes worth more than 10 and he would get 12. And yes I pulled those numbers out of thin air.

Statman Verified Member Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 But "Donaldson doesn't play a premium position"... lolz Gregg Zaun is a moron. Pitchers face a right handed hitter 73.6% of the time (accounting for switch hitters). They don't call 3rd base the "hot corner" for nothing. It is an EXTREMELY difficult infield position. I do not weigh the importance of 3rd base any more than I do centre field. You need great players at BOTH positions defensively. Really the only defensive position that is NOT "premium" IMO is 1st base.

I don't mind the current system tbh but just wondering if they planned to ever change that.

Third base is the position that is the most underrated by old school types. It's traditionally thought of as an offensive position when it's really a premium defensive position. As a consequence of this, 3B is under-represented in the Hall of Fame and some of the great two way 3B like Rolen, Beltre and Donaldson are under-appreciated.
