No I'll be living with my family in Toronto but will definitely catch a few games with GD. GD is next but he's a few years behind so it could take a while. We need to make sure he takes CS and not some pre-law program.

I'm really fortunate that they decided to look specifically at Waterloo math students to fill one of the positions. I was naturally the best candidate of that pool.

Is it an intern program affiliated with the school?

Waterloo is a very co-op oriented school. Pretty much all STEM students are in co-op. I switch between work and school every four months. So there's a process where employers sign up to post positions and students apply to as many as 50 positions. Then interviews happen for a few weeks in the first half of the term (students who don't get jobs go into continuous round where interviews and postings all happen at once) and employers rank the candidates they interview. They're not required to hire anyone and positions often go unfilled, but there's an expectation that they will.

I believe last winter when I applied was the first term the team got involved. There are thousands of companies involved (most of which are CS-related) so it's not really an affiliation as much as a business relationship between the company and school.

I forgot / didn't realize you were from Toronto.

Anyway, I am excited to have someone I know inside the Shapiro regime. Hink hated working for the AA crowd but Graydon seemed to enjoy it.

My office hires a lot of co-op students from economics/business programs, but the work they do is pretty boring compared to what you'll be doing. It's awesome that the team gets involved in that. They probably get more applicants than anyone else.

That's cool. I was just hoping to get a statistics-related job for next term and my second option (which I may or may not have been able to get) was with a government agency in Ottawa doing data stuff.

They got 102, which is a good number but not huge. The Facebooks and Googles can get 400 applicants. It helped that their requirements weren't stringent. Some companies will include in their requirements technologies that nobody can be expected to know.

We could have been co-workers lol.

So you were selected over 101 others? Congrats.

Probably because of that DDL title more than anything.

He actually listed that on his resume, no joke.

Wow Reddit is going bananas with GD's article. It's going to set the 2015 daily record for visits.

Thousands of clicks and 36 comments:

/r/torontobluejays is good for about 1500 hits right now, if your article is sufficiently interesting (ie., related to Blue Jays trade idea).

If we wanted to actually grow and pump up the blog right now we would be wise to use reddit

Yep. They're actually embracing the articles and using them as a platform for discussion. They have to actually be good articles, though. GD's piece was thorough and slightly contrarian.

The comments will be hard on you. Lots of faulty dumn logic.

No. I only had Graydon, you and Jorge do it so I could put it out as quickly as possible. I needed it out quick.

Can't really compare the surplus value of a free agent with a guy who has 3 arb years left. The Jays already paid a big price for those arb years. It's essentially a 6/150 extension. No chance Donaldson would take that. Miggy Cabrera got a $300M extension when he was basically in the same situation as Donaldson is in right now. MVP season, still multiple years away from free agency, and 32 years old when the deal kicks in."

Does someone wanna respond to this comment? Not comparable (Miggy already making $$$) but I don't have time

Just gotta watch that subreddit, they can be babies. The blog is different, but I've noticed they've deleted any links that reference the forum.

Sartori made some of that difference. As well as a gradual shift towards analytics, which let us do more actual meaningful work than the mainly menial work Nox had to do.

Welcome back to the blog sub-forum!

I didn't enjoy working for AA, I enjoyed working for Tinnish, LaCava, Sheehan, and Pare.

You've said before that you didn't really get to interact with AA at all. Is that because he wasn't interested in what you were doing or just because of the nature of his job?

Just how he operated. He assigned me specifically some tasks at the deadline, but was all done through Joe. Even the "good work".

Sartori made a difference by leaving? Meaning he was a douche?

I'm guessing they'll be expanding the analytics department a bit under Shapiro, judging from Sheehan's new title. Probably a new employee or two and maybe an extra intern?
