AdamLindsMom Verified Member Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 I don't get what the hoopla is for this guy. He's perennially been given a top 5 payroll. Sure the Tigers were good in what has probably been the worst division in baseball the last 10 years. He's left the team in shambles with terrible contracts, terrible farm system and an at best average team on the field. Any GM can throw money at problems if given the opportunity.

He has absolutely robbed some people with getting Scherzer, Peralta, Sanchez and Cabrera. You can say he's left the Tigers a little crippled with the terrible contracts but with that being said he's also left the Tigers a lot more respectable then when he got there. I can't blame him on the Verlander contract. I honestly think if it was any other team, they would have done the same. Well at least 70-80% of the teams out there. Rays, A's and Jays probably would've traded Verlander.
fireballW Verified Member Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 He seems decent at putting together a major league roster and AA is great at filling the minors with talent so it could be a good mix. I am just glad AA finally got out from the hot seat ad I think he is one of the bright minds of baseball.
0ctobyte Verified Member Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 aren't Dombrowski and AA really just the same person. I mean if I had to compare AA to anyone it would be Dombrowski right after Mike Rizzo Except Dombrowski can't build a farm for the life of him
baubau Verified Member Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Except Dombrowski can't build a farm for the life of him And also, to be fair, AA can build a pen. He had a top of the league pen a few years ago and has done a solid job overall this season.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 AA seems to handle contract negotiations well. I'd say that's more his strength than farm building which is really more Andrew Tinnish's domain.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 How does Dombrowski fill out his 40 man roster? If he does it well, that'd be an amazing duo. Imagine AA with the ability to build depth?
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Bob Elliott reporting that the Jays have reached out to Dombrowski. a lot of teams have reached out to him
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Dombrowski is actually pretty similar to AA. Makes a lot of high-profile trades, prefers stars and scrubs roster, aggressive in draft, etc. He's not a depth builder... have you not been paying attention to baseball for the past five years? Billy Beane is definitely the guy

TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 Thing is they want him as a President, not a GM. Don't know how true it is but Dombrowski is said to want $8M a year and be in charge. Those two things don't fit in Toronto. I'm still not a fan of AA, but in no way should the Jays be bringing in anyone that will undermine his decisions at this point.

Can you see AA moving up to President, with Tinnish moving up as a VP/GM, they'd just obviously work together. As per usual, I think AA would be a good President. Also, I'd think Dan Duquette would get axed in Baltimore if they don't make the post season. He's probably going to be in play.

That is a really good point but Dombrowski has been around a really long time and they might consider giving him some bucks to come here. I'd probably rather Kenny Williams for a lot cheaper or if Cherington gets canned maybe they could look at him for assistant GM or something. AA should probably be GM for a little while still but all those guys upgrade the front office.

Second time didn't burn us since Molina busted in Chicago's farm, but still. Cherington is dreadful. He pretty much fluked his way into a WS by complete accident and it's clear that was a massive outlier since the other 3 of the 4 years (2012-2015) he's been GM, the Red Sox have been complete s*** with pretty much the same nucleus of players.

Short sighted post. Williams has been with the Sox for a long time and hasn't been shy to make aggressive and creative moves. Cherington has made some good moves too- the Dodgers trade, not signing Ellsbury, trading 2 months of Andrew Miller for Eduardo Rodriguez (huge return considering Norris + spare parts got Price this year). Obviously debating who made better transactions won't get us very far, but both guys would be useful in the Jays organization in some capacity. I never said hire them as the next GM

I never said hire them as the next GM what does this count for if they're awful moves? + EdRod wasn't a top prospect when he was acquired. And he gave away Reddick for Andrew Bailey and gave up on Mark Melancon after like 10 innings.

You could quibble about his record as GM but I don't think that's necessarily a detterent to being a good president. You mostly just want a guy whose been in baseball and has some soft skills he can employ in the boardroom. Kenny might very well be that guy. I think the real argument against him is that he's not leaving the White Sox and the Blue Jays souldn't trip all over themselves trying to pry executives from other teams. That was just embarassing last time around.

It shows that he's always thinking outside of the box and would be a useful baseball mind to have, and second what kingkat said about being a good president. AA would still be basically making the final decisions. Rodriguez was still a very good prospect with his stock rising during the season while Norris' was arguably falling. It was a very good move for the Red Sox, but like I said there's no point in just cherrypicking transactions to make a point. I think a guy who's been GM in one of baseball's biggest markets (probably has one of the best scouting departments, analytic groups) has a ton of knowledge he could bring to another ball club, whether that's as assistant General Manager or something else he'd be a useful piece.
