Iannetta is pretty appealing. Coming off a brutal season that kinda came out of nowhere. Good framer and defender with some upside at the plate.

I was assuming Iannetta would look for/get a starter job.

Projected at 1 WAR and 53 GP next year. Dunno if anyone will sign him to start but I guess it's possible. Steamer seems to think he'll be a backup.

This is a weird statement. Why does what Steamer "thinks" matter? Does Steamer even "think"? It's projecting him to be above league average so he should start. Steamer isn't designed to project playing time.

The other options are pretty limited:

Catchers

Alex Avila (29)

Chris Iannetta (33)

Dioner Navarro (32)

Jordan Pacheco (30)

Brayan Pena (34)

A.J. Pierzynski (39)

Jarrod Saltalamacchia (31)

Geovany Soto (33)

Matt Wieters (30)

A.J. Pierzynski please haha, get some dugout fights between him and our boy Donaldson, hot up in the six.

IIRC, the best method for projecting playing time is crowd sourcing and STEAMER on that front, is, for lack of a better word, a steaming pile. A crowd sourced prediction of playing time with a STEAMER performance projection is optimal.

When it comes to things like manager usage, team philosophy, fans really have a pulse on that sort of thing in a way that no current computer can.

So is everyone here just giving up on Hutch? He was pretty shaky this year, but last year he was great. Hutch is a solid #3 IMO.

I still feel we need 2 acquisitions though. Gotta prepare for injuries and whatnot.

Rotation should look like:

Stroman

Zimmermann

Chen

Hutchison

Dickey

With Sanchez/Osuna/Hendriks as depth.

With our offense, a rotation like that should be adequate.

Alot of posters here put way too much stock into projections... At the end of the day players are PEOPLE, and people are unpredictable. You can try to predict future performance based on trends/numbers/stats, but you're never going to have a surefire way to project player performance.

The results speak.

This makes no sense. The point is to be as close as possible. Projections will win over an entire population.

Of course it makes sense. Your response even proves my point

Steamer is better than the crowd at projecting peformance. The only thing I'm saying is that people are better at predicting playing time. You're extrapolating falsehoods from what I'm saying.

And how should you go about projecting future performance?

Literally anyone with a brain understands projections aren't fool proof. But they're the best tool we have so why not utilize them?

For sure. But we shouldn't treat projections as gospel.

(I'm not religious, just a figure of speech)

Yup. I think the responses to my post prove my point. I say projections can't be trusted, and within 10 minutes I have 3-4 posters implying I am stupid.

I won't continue to argue this.

Pretty sure I'm the only who has felt most comfortable prior to a game knowing Estrada has the ball throughout the season (Price/Stroman not included).

He has been pretty good, did he have any stinkers this year?

People are implying that you're stupid because your post was dumb. 'Guys, projections aren't gospel' is an offensively obvious thing to say. Literally everyone knows that they don't perfectly project what a given player or team will do. People use them because they give a quick reference as to what a reasonable, unbiased expectation for a given player or team will look like.

I reserve calling people stupid when they actually are. I don't think you are- I just think that post was.

This was mainly what I was referring to.

It doesn't necessarily but thought it noteworthy all the same. After a season like this one, I don't think it's a slam dunk that Iannetta gets a starting gig.

People are incredibly predictable, are you kidding me?
