HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Wow at this biased opinion, can this even be called an opinion or just dribble? I'm surprised you didn't leap and just call me racist while you're at it lol
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Very slowly people are starting to believe in his bat. He's been a top 10 line drive % player in baseball and hits it all over the field. He's been a pleasant surprise and had several big hits this year, without Colabello the Jays might be a few games worse. He's 3rd in the team in offensive WAR and has just over half the PAs as most of the starters. He's been great at the plate.

Thats the thing he's good at the plate but terrible at defense. Eddy is the full time dh so he's very limited, doesn't provide much value for a team like the jays

Is anyone willing to trade Edwin this off season and roll with Colabello as primary DH / backup 1B next year? Colabello will be dirt cheap again in 2016 and then has his 3 arb years. The only caveats are that he's 30 years old now. I didn't realize that. I also forgot that Edwin is a FA after next season and is still making very reasonable $ next year (10M) The All-Star break/non-waiver trade deadline would have been the best time to trade Edwin if we were going to. An offense-starved team like the Mets in serious need of a bat might have given up something quite decent for him.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 ^ people over estimate Edwin's value Teams aren't in the market for a big bat DH

Like RealAccountant said, they might not get a whole lot for 1 year of Edwin. You can remember 1 year of Jason Heyward got a young and talented, but struggling pitcher in Shelby Miller. So you'd have to think they wouldn't be able to get a good young player for Edwin which is what the board seems to want. Seattle might be a fit, but they're not going to get Taijuan Walker for example unless Zdurincik (SP?) is off his rocker.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Edwin for Thor The Mets aren't trading five years of a top 25 pitcher for one year of a aging, declining slugger. They have Duda at first base too, which makes the Mets and Jays unlikely trade partners for Edwin.

Think we could say it wasn't keepsies and we want takesies backsies?

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Since when is Edwin declining. Hes been playing hurt all year. Hes just starting to look like himself again. Probably since his 32nd birthday.

I just don't buy Colla and his .400 BABIP as much as Ive appreciated his offense this year. Edwin is better at 1B and proven bat. Rather go with his $10mm option. Edwin wouldn't likely bring enough back to be worth the risk of a Colla collapse and his D.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Edwin for Thor buhuhahahahahahahahahahahahaha...we are that dumb but they aren't.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 This isn't 1970. Players don't break down in their early 30's anymore. Edwin has plenty of productive years ahead of him. Hopefully in a Blue Jays uniform. The steroid era is over (errr at least we think/hope it is) - players are once again declining at age 32...

The benefit of moving E5 and opening up the DH role isn't to free up 600 at bats for Colabello - it's to allow Jose, Tulo, Martin, etc. the opportunity to DH from time to time - hopefully to keep them fresh and healthy.

Counting on Colla as a full time player is tantamount to buying a junior mining stock at its all time high. Never ends well.

Sorrow Verified Member Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 colabello lacks power.... he gets on base and would make a great bench piece, pinch hitter and back up DH. I think he'd be a good 5th man on a NL bench. Can pinch hit, play the odd game at 1B and in a horrendous you lost all your OFs in a fire situation can "play" LF. Then again casual fans (I'm talking to you /r/torontobluejays) seem to think he's a good baseball player. When you need a .400 BABIP to be 0.3 wins above replacement there's issues. He's filling the roll he should be filling now, but in the wrong league.
