ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 I think a lot of people have known that for a while. Too many players away I think. Adding one or two is nice... But you're probably at least 4 players away from being a serious contender... Not a pretender. Biggest issue for me is that they find ways to lose games. Now, it may all turn around, but they just seem to take themselves out of innings on offense or make errors at the wrong time. Or put the wrong relievers in the wrong spots.

I still don't see Minnesota as a contender because of their pitching staff and average offense. And this issue could also be said in Baltimore and Tampa. And let's not get started with Detroit...
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 That's what I sort of thought, but to see it in real numbers is a little shocking. The Jays are really never bad or good, but consistently define middling. No matter who's in charge. Depressing. I think the key for ownership is that the team is always good enough to draw enough fans to either the RC and/or to watch on TV.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Have you checked what the Blue Jays have done apart from that winning streak? 22-27 since the end of May for the Twins, Jays are 16-20 since the winning streak. So it's pretty much even.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 So you mean awful? Basically. But the entire AL outside of the Yankees, Royals, Angels and Astros has been bloody awful. At this point, it's between the Twins, Jays and Orioles for the 2nd wild card. Not including the Tigers or Rays, as both are expected to sell. And BTW, the Twins need a lot to even stay in contention.. they need a C, SS, OBP help, a power reliever, and another starter. Reality is, they're more likely to be a contender in 2016 than this season.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Padres still talking to the Jays re: Kennedy/Cashner/Ross and even Kimbrel. Can see this happening.. Padres are in full fire sale mode right now, as they can't afford their payroll long term, especially being such a disappointing team:
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Payroll should not be an issue for next year with all the contracts coming off the books. Buehrle Dickey Thole Romero Navarro Izturus That's what $40-50 mil right there

I mean, we could be the Tigers or Red Sox, with bad, unmovable contracts.

Buehrle Dickey Thole Romero Navarro Izturus That's what $40-50 mil right there I don't think anyone really knows. You also have to factor in raises for some of the players. Also, what would the Jays have to give up to get these guys from Padres? I mean, if Padres are in sell mode trying to shed payroll, it might be worth it to take on Kimbrel's contract to pay less for Cashner/Ross.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 I can't believe we are chasing the twins! What the hell? I wouldn't trade our roster straight up for theirs and our position in the standings for theirs with it. We're cursed, but no one even knows it cause we're too lame to have something cool like a billy goat curse or a curse of the Bambino. We need a 10 game winning streak starting Tuesday against the Phillies. f*** this nonsense!
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Apparently, Liam Hendriks has appeared in just 4 games in July.

He made no mention of Gibby's bullpen use in his game recap, actually saying that Gibby's hands were tied and including Gibby's comment that Loup's pitch was disappointing. You think, Gibby??! Shi is getting worse.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 The following info was stolen from another forum, but here's the Jays record after 100 games since 2007: 2015 50-50 2014 51-49 2013 45-55 2012 51-49 2011 50-50 2010 51-49 2009 49-51 2008 49-51 2007 50-50 Yikes. Its actually really depressing to see these numbers. The blue jays are literally the definition of a "perpetually .500" team.

BallsDeep Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Can't we acquire Shields as our innings eater with MB and Dickey leaving? Wouldn't have to give up a lot to take on that huge contract?

Just have to catch them and hope no team around us (Detroit, Tampa, Baltimore) catches fire. Then again, if the Jays make the Wild Card game, they could argue to keep AA and Gibbons. Tough call.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 If the Jays don't beat Adam Morgan and Jerome Williams this week, they're pathetic! I mean, those starters for the Phillies are awful. That's 2 free wins there. Take advantage!
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 TFW your team doesn't know it's an off day. Maybe Gibby runs their twitter account. http://i.gyazo.com/f578091b9e5b527df43752041671d65e.png

SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Looking ahead to 2016... Do you think there is any chance we retain MB? Do you think he retires? Is giving him a qualifying offer a crazy idea, given how he continues to pitch so effectively? Dickey was awful in April and May, but he's looking solid now, even with Martin as his catcher. Do we exercise his option, ~ $16M, for 2016? Do you think Osuna, Sanchez and/or Norris have chances to be in the rotation next year? I think Estrada will not be extended after this season. So he's a non-factor. Does AA take the team option on EE? I am 99% sure Bats gets his option exercised. Can we decline EE's option, but then give him a qualifying offer? Probably not. Do you think Stroman has avoided the sophomore jinx by being injured his second year in the MLB?

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 So the Jays just had 16 of their last 19 games on the road, and their record in those games was 6-10. They'll now play 16 of their next 19 games at home (with the three away games being at Yankee Stadium), and then begin another eight-game road trip with a two-game set in Philadelphia. If they feel like they have a shot at contention and they want to make a real run at the playoffs, the time to act is going to be now. In the perfect world, they beat the s*** out of the Phillies and the Twins and get some upset victories over the Royals, before going to New York to take at least two of three from the Yankees. If the Jays do that, they're probably near or above the division lead after the first week of August, and they have some momentum going into another six game home stand against the A's and the Yankees. If they falter at all in this upcoming home stand however, their chances of making the post season will become virtually non-existent, because at that point they'll have to hope for a Cards/Braves, Red Sox/Rays type September collapse from the Yankees, and they'll have to win a s*** ton of games against the AL East to catch them. If the Jays are really buyers, they should make a move in the next three days instead of waiting until the deadline, so they have the best possible team going into the Royals series.

Edwin and Bautista should have their options picked up 100%
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 No to Dickeys Option MB retires. Yes on EEs option MB should most definitely be given a QO. 15 mil for one year is worth it based on his performance and influence on others. If he declines either he is forced into retirement or has to take on a much lower contract with another club (as no team is going to sacrifice a 1st round pick for a year or two of him and $15 million a year). Either we get him at 15 mio, or we get a comp pick.
