Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Because winning is important? Trading EE in particular for pitching could make for a better team, when Smoak and lefty killer Valencia are available. Won't happen, moot.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Why not deal one of Edwin or Jose before they do slow down, are getting paid a s*** ton of money and they're only being kept around to whet the appetite of fans to watch good Jays players retiring as Jays? I'm really big on the idea of trading either Bautista or Edwin this offseason to reload on some pitching or prospects/whatever. Don't want to have to re-sign both to monster deals that will take them into their late 30s. Still leaves us with Edwin/Bautista, Donaldson, Martin, Reyes as the core of our offense.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 ^ I dont know. Since we gave away two top pitching prospects that right now look like could be front of the line pitchers for years to come, its hard to think otherwise. I remember the excitement around the Lansing 3, and to think that we may have kept the only non front line pitcher from there Yeah Noah Syndergaard and who else? The others I don't see as front of the rotation starters. Plus how does the Marlins deal and the RA Dickey trade compare to landing Cole Hamels? We're talking about an elite arm locked up reasonably for 3 years.

I don't want the Jays to keep Jose or EE around after 2016 considering the cost to bring them back, though the Blue Jays should do everything in their power to try and field a team that could contend for a World Series in the next two-three years when you have guys like Jose, EE, Donaldson and Martin all locked up as your core.

So you have EE and Bautista both until 2016, so why not try and win a World Series in the next two years with them while they still are performing at a high level rather than without them?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Just a little something I've put together annually for a few years. 2015 Trade Deadline Targets: Pitchers 2015 Trade Deadline Targets: Hitters Used NJH's list + a few of my own for pitchers, and did hitters myself. Not a lot of hitters out there. If you guys have any adds, tell me.

Because the offense will still be good enough if we trade one of them, and we could use the pieces that we receive to help us now AND in the future.

But you're making them worse next year if you get an up and coming player in the trade. That sounds like a terrible idea. I'd just keep them and then let them walk (will of course be tough to swallow for PR reasons) or trade them next year if they struggling to stay in contention.

With his contract he might not cost a boat load of guys. Perfect opportunity to buy low if they can take on most of the contract.

Remember a couple of years ago some posters wanted to trade Bautista to Texas for a package built around Profar and Perez or some other names who I can't remember. Good thing that never happened. I'm up for trading Jose or EE though it makes zero sense to trade them for prospects right now when this team is in contention to win the AL East in 2015 and in 2016. And it's not like you are going to get a prospect like Joc Pederson or Kris Bryant for a year and a half of Bautista or EE.

If the Jays traded Bautista or EE for a bunch of prospects nobody heard of it would be a PR disaster. Unless you completely blow it all up (which makes zero sense right now considering the Jays position), then you try to win with both Bautista and EE.

Heard same on D'arnaud who may become a good player if he can ever stay off the DL. I don't get why some under value the opportunity here and now with the existing team plus the right established addition(s) which will cost us some assets. Edited June 28, 2015 by BigCecil

It's because your over valuing Hamels, it could be shaping up to be another Dickey trade and in my opinion we have a better opportunity next year.

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but I wouldn't be against the Jays giving up some talent if the return (mostly pitching) is under control for a few years. The Jays are kind of in a must win now year since MB is a FA, Dickey can be bought out, and the $12M he would cost could pick up a back end rotation guy who's 10 years younger and could put up similar or better numbers, so 2 of our vets and inning eaters will be gone. If a trade brings in a starter who can help the team win now plus stick around for a couple of years it would be the best case unless the Jays decide to go with the young pitchers, try to sign guys on the FA market (which wouldn't be easy if they had a chance to win a division and didn't at least try something other than bring up a AAAA player), or whatever. I don't like the idea of burning the farm for rentals or huge contracts that might handcuff the team later. I'm sure AA could play his cards right and pick up at least an arm for the pen and rotation. The pen might be more difficult since we'd be after a legit closer or someone who's more capable of coming in late (8th-9th) and close the door especially since Osuna can't pitch two inning saves every time out. The good news is if the Jays do pick up some players there is some money coming off the books. They even have cheap options on EE and Bautista. Problem is Martin and Reyes' contracts jump up to $20M or a bit more in Reyes' case so that's going to hurt the Jays a bit unless ownership keeps the payroll about where it is. If they manage to win that money might go up. I just have this feeling that if they don't get it this year, they might throw their arms up, say they've tried in that 3 year window, and then just run out the young pitchers and try a rebuild, blow it up, and we're back to square one like we've seen before. That being said I don't like the idea of selling the farm for players who aren't going to be under control for more than the rest of this year. You have to pay the price of business but the Jays just need some decent pitching. An ace or a solid #2 would be great, but someone who can eat innings, save the pen, give the Jays a chance to win with our offence, who is a lock for his starts, preferably a ground ball pitcher or someone who doesn't give up too many homers, and he might come cheaper this year and possibly next to resign. Having a true, shutdown ace would be great, especially if it's a Wild Card game, but if the Jays pitching just pitches decently and the offense can score, they should be fine if they can get another shutdown arm in the pen. Then again I might have no idea what I'm talking about
