reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 It means rather than overpay for an ace with your top prospects, keep them and get a Haren for a couple of B prospects. With Jays offense, a No 2 or 3 starter can provide No 1 starter results. Yeah but, Hamels makes the team a lot better, whereas Haren makes the team a little bit better. What does overpay even mean? They're sacrificing some guys not ready and who could bust for a proven ace. Do you deal Norris + Pompey for Hamels? It's tough to swallow but I would definitely consider it. If Haren provides No. 1 starter results then what does Hamels provide? An unstoppable force? Automatic win day?

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Mike Fiers eh. Wonder what he'd cost... His offspeed stuff is unreal. His fastball is wayyyy too hitable though. He's an interesting target if they want to go the cheaper route.

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 How good do you think Hamels is? I don't know, he's a top 20 pitcher for sure, not top 10 but maybe in the best 15. I was joking about unstoppable force, he said that Haren could give #1 pitcher results which I found a bit funny.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Hamels gives you some length. Barring injury he's a lock for another 100 innings the rest of the season. He's the kind of trade that can really hurt your future financially but he's also the kind of deal that puts a buzz into the fans.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Mike Fiers eh. Wonder what he'd cost... We should buy utilizing Dave Stewart's methods. 4.39 ERA, 10 Dingers

I don't know what you mean by "#1 results" so I laughed out loud. How about today? Hamels had a better chance to keep them to 0 or 1-2 runs than Haren did. I don't understand your argument still. To be honest, I think Samardzija + Nate Jones is a better package to target than Hamels and Papelbon based on what I anticipate it will cost but we'll see what happens.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 What? He wasn't convicted of a felony. I'd be interested in Leake for 2015 and beyond. a joke btw, border guards can refuse entry for any reason....
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 I'd be interested in Leake for 2015 and beyond. That's surprising. He's about as non of a Howie type player as there is.

Its kinda like when we were "buzzing" getting Cone and winning the world series, giving up Kent. He has 3 more years at same cost of Reyes but we lose Mark B next season and possibly RA. He is a financial commitment to be sure but its manageable. He has a lot of miles on him but he has been a pretty consistent front end SP

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Adding an arm like Hamels can definitely take the Jays to the next level. This team is built to win a championship in 2015, 2016 or 2017. You have Jose Bautista, EE, Donaldson, Martin all locked up in their primes. This is the time to make a run. You are never going to have a core again like Bautista, EE, Donaldson and Martin all at the same time again, and I'm being rational here. There is no way the Jays could sign a FA bat like EE or Bautista on the open market - they got lucky with them as late bloomers and how they signed team friendly contracts, so take advantage of that. Same with trading for JD - players like him aren't made available that often. Hamels Hutchison MB Dickey Estrada And heading into next season, add Stroman to that mix (obviously MB and Dickey could be gone), though a top three of Hamels, Stroman and Hutch looks pretty sweet.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Hamels? Leake? http://s3.amazonaws.com/rapgenius/1363126452_taco-girl-meme-generator-why-not-both-6ec00b.jpg I'd rather target an ace like Hamels or Cueto for this season. Leake would be a nice FA signing in the offseason since likely MB leaves and the Jays don't pick up Dickey's option, so Leake would fit in nicely as a durable arm that could provide bulk innings. Trading for Hamels I think should be their No. 1 priority since they'd have an ace locked up over the next three years. $22.5 M is a lot of money per year, though I'd rather have Hamels over the next three years at that AAV over signing a FA like Cueto or Shark at 6-7 + years at a similar AVV. Hamels Stroman Hutchison Leake No. 5 starter - Estrada/Sanchez/Norris (if they don't trade him to land Hamels)

He has a lot of miles on him but he has been a pretty consistent front end SP the situations are very different. When the Jays picked up Cone they were 2.5 games up with 44 games left to play, and had sold out there stadium for 3 straight years. My point about the buzz was that Hamels creates a buzz for the fans, and even if they don't make the playoffs it gives fans reason to buy tickets (and you can market him next off season too). Leake, Fiers, and to a lesser extent Cueto don't do that.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 when the Jays traded Doc, they got the Phillies top 2-3-4 Prospects. That would be Hoffman, Sanchez, and Pompey. I think that there is a potentiol deal at Boyd, Hoffman, and Pompey. Given how bad Chase Utley has been, I can see the Phillies asking for Devon Travis. How would people here feel about Hamels (Phillies Eat money) + Papelbon for Travis, Sanchez, Hoffman and Pompey. That is probably what we are looking at.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Hamels to start the wild card game please.

He has a lot of miles on him but he has been a pretty consistent front end SP Hamels' contract is more manageable than what it would cost signing Cueto as a FA, or Shark. The Jays are losing MB off the books and I'm sure Dickey as well. So money will be freed up next season to take on a contract like Hamels and possibly sign another FA arm like Leake or Fiers, who I'm sure wouldn't cost that much.

The Jays need an ace in order to contend within their window (2015-2017). Cueto will still be a heavy price I'm sure and he likely leaves as a FA. Leake and Fiers aren't really anything special and don't put the Jays over the top this season, though one of those arms would be a nice FA signing this upcoming offseason to replace the innings of MB and Dickey.

He's also had to starts against our division rivals and been beaten up both times - the Red Sox went deep four times and the Yankees roughed him up a few days ago

Hamels brings you buzz, and a front-end starter for 2.5 years. And his contract is reasonable. That's golden. But I'll say again, I want to keep Hoffman. Sanchez and Norris?
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 (edited) I would guess Hamels would ask for Toronto to pick up his option to waive his no-trade clause. Also, where's that Blue Jays payroll thread at? It would come in handy right about to see how Hamels's deal would impact payroll. Edited June 28, 2015 by ElNik2013

I see what you're saying but this reasoning seems a lot like the one used to rationalize the Marlins trade, what with windows and all. I prefer a sustainable winner, but do understand the desire to win now, not to mention maintaining good tv ratings and decent attendance which is why I've been open-minded towards the team for the Marlins trade despite strongly disagreeing with it.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Also, if Jays are trading away guys like Norris, Pompey and Hoffman, I want a good young starter back, not a guy over 30.

At the time of the Marlins trade the Jays had JPA behind the plate and question marks at 2B, CF, LF and all over the rotation. That team wasn't even close to ready and there was no rationalization for taking on such contracts and then refusing to address other needs for two full years. Given where this team stands right now however, it would be completely illogical to be against improving the rotation because you desire a "sustainable winner".

My point is they are/would be major deals in season where we have to give to get. The reason we sold out 3 straight prior seasons were new stadium and the fact that we had been competitive since 85 winning 99. I find the "casual fan" gets slagged on this Board too much (not saying by you). They are the backbone of the baseball business like it or not. Agree major deals do create a ticket selling buzz for the casual fan but the flip side is they usually panic and bail first when/if the wins don't come. Then all you get left is obsessed baseball fans like us on this Board haha. Edited June 28, 2015 by BigCecil
