LTR Verified Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Agree. Im interested in the LF and 2nd discussion on him (not for the Jays) but he is still a force when in the line up. OPS isn't a great stat for a comparison with OF Pillar anyway....a SS hacker speed guy like him who relies on extra base power. Reyes triples since becoming a Blue Jays = 4 (1100+ PA).
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Reyes bat does project to be league average though. OPS is not a good stat to use when evaluating a player against the league/others as it's not park adjusted. Reyes projects as 101 and 102 wRC+ on Zips, Steamer, respectively for RoS... that is essentially league average (as 100 is the weighted league average). League average bat (above average for SS) + piss poor defense + a little speed and base running + base running derps + smiling mania + persistent injuries = get the f*** out. I don't know why you keep on bringing up base running derps, when wRC+ and BsR already account for it.
LTR Verified Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I don't know why you keep on bringing up base running derps, when wRC+ and BsR already account for it. wRC+ doesn't include any base running. You're right about BsR though, and his BsR projects as s*** now.

You're right, apparently wRC+ doesn't account for base running. His BsR does not project as s*** though. It's projected as slightly above average.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Reyes triples since becoming a Blue Jays = 4 (1100+ PA). Yup. He ain't what he used to be on the triples front. Nobody is disputing that.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I remember in 2013 it was Reyes error with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth that ended the jays 11 game winning streak Who knows where the jays had gone from there if he didn't throw it in the dirt

metafour Verified Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 1 game better in the standings? Nah yo, they probably would have won another 10 games in a row. That error made everyone really sad and they gave up after that error.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I still don't know how that throw wasn't -1 WAR.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I still don't know how that throw wasn't -1 WAR. because there are other factors that contributed to to loss, if the jays drove in more runs or if the defence allowed less then the error wouldn't have mattered.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 because there are other factors that contributed to to loss, if the jays drove in more runs or if the defence allowed less then the error wouldn't have mattered. I think that was sarcasm.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 I think that was sarcasm. I've seen comments of that nature far too often for me to think it was sarcasm.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 It was sarcasm. Just mocking RA for being dumm.

Though Reyes deserves more of the blame as a proper throw ends the game, but similar to the throw against Minny it wouldn't have been an error had a different 1B been on the field.
Yorkshire Blue Jay Verified Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Reyes is in decline due to age without a doubt he is getting older and declining with a hefty contract. But this is hardly unique in the game of Baseball nearly all teams have overpaid depreciating assets - We'll be in the same position in a few years with Martin. We don't have a good enough replacement at SS so we should continue to roll him out everyday. As for Haworth, I yearn for the day that sports commentators did just that, comment on the action, paint a picture with your words, describe the game. They are not called sports opinionators.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 They'll end up paying Jose Reyes $96MM over 5 years. He has already been worth 6 wins and projects at 2.4 wins/140 G right now by Fangraphs Depth Charts. If you project him at 1.2 wins ROS, then 2 wins in 2016 and 1.5 wins in 2017, you have 10.7. That's a poor return for $96MM, but it's not nearly as awful as you and Howarth make it seem. Jose Reyes is still a productive big leaguer and can play the position adequately. His UZR as a Blue Jay over two-plus years is -10.8. That's below-average, obviously, but it's not that awful. He should still be playing shortstop for this team. What do you mean by "he's getting old?" He'll soon be 32 and while that's an older-than-average age, it's not like he's totally falling apart physically like you and Howarth believe. Everybody is getting old when compared to previous states... stating a player is getting old is redundant. You make it seem like I want Reyes out or something lol. You also make it seem like Howarth hates Reyes and wants him out of the team too. All he is suggesting is moving him over to 2B for the meantime until Travis gets back. You said that it's a poor return for Reyes on he $96MM (especially since it's back-end heavy), which is what Howarth said. You also said that he's below average defensively at short in his Jays career... which is what Howarth also said. So I don't know why you're disagreeing with him or what I said when you're saying the same thing lol Also he is getting old. Apart from his running ability, his body is getting more worn out. He's been banged up his whole career, injuries left and right, that's why we say he's made out of glass. You think with him ageing, and playing on the turf won't hinder him further down the line? Come on lol

LTR Verified Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Just skimmed through that one and it says Reyes was on the DL at the time. That explains the 11-game win streak... yeah, as I recall that one was fueled by Kawasaki playing everyday.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 the 11 game win streak was ended by the rays just being the rays at tropicana. if my memory serves me right it was a 3-0 game with esmil giving up 3 solo homers lol
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 Have to really hand it to Reyes. The best way to respond the criticism (and some of it has been legit) is to be the exciting catalyst he still can be. Since this came out he has been electric. Today was awesome.
