Just curious how it works when they back-date DL stints. Can they go back to as far as the last game played?

Zwolinski had a piece in the Star which seems to indicate that Bautista hasn't really even started throwing yet, which seems concerning based on the amount of time since it's happened. I would be tempted to bite the bullet and DL him and try to give some time to get the shoulder in better shape. The idea of having to give him a few games off so they can get a cortisone shot in there seems like a pretty big red flag.

With NL games coming up the Bautista DL seems like a no brainer at this point. I get the argument that Bautista at DH is worth more than his replacement but Bautista as pinch hitter? No to mention that it would be really nice to give him a shot a full health (although we don't really know whether that's even possible until the off season).

I suspect the team may have been waiting to get at least Reyes's bat back in lineup to help mitigate Joey Bats's possible absence.

If my suspicion is true, I doubt Bautista plays this week unless they get some good results from the cortisone shot. This would be to be able to back-date him to Saturday.

This seems like the sensible course of action. I don't think a pinch hit appearance would justify compromising the possibility of back dating the DL stint (although IIRC the team has done exactly that in similar previous cases).

I guess that's the million dollar question. If keeping him in the lineup is preventing his chance at getting back to full health, then I think they have to DL him. His numbers aside, keeping him at DH forces Edwin to play 1B pretty much full-time, solidifies Pillar's spot in the lineup, and keeps Smoak nailed to the bench for the most part. Gotta find a way to get him back to playing RF, if at all possible this season.

Where did you see that he hasn't started throwing yet? I heard Buck says probably about 4 days ago the he started to throw already, though very short throws.

Besides, it's probably too late to DL him now. We have 3 games against the Nationals starting June 1st. Then there are 2 against the Mets on June 15 and 16.

If they DL him now it back tracks to May 24, he's he's going to miss all 3 games against the Nationals. Could be ready for Mets.

The other option is to shut him down and keep him on the roster, then maybe he will be ok enough for the Nationals.

The latter option means we're short a bench player.

I think the throwing thing Buck mentioned was hearsay because Bautista said after that game something like "there is no update, there is no progress and when there is an update I will let you know." He sounded pissed off, as if he knows he can't throw worth s*** right now. I think the cortisone shot was a last ditch effort to try to avoid a DL stint and realistically that doesn't heal anything it just brings swelling down so there is less pain. It doesn't make anything heal.

If they DL him with the full intention he will not return until he can throw 100%, then he will be gone a lot longer than 15 games. My personal thought is that they felt if they had put him on the DL when the injury happened he would have been sidelined for possibly months, but by playing DH it could actually allow it to heal a bit on its own to the point when they do DL him its only a 15 game stint.

I feel like they are either riding it out as long as possible to make a shorter DL trip or milking out all of his offensive production they can knowing a DL trip would end in surgery or something significant, possibly season ending (torn rotator cuff or something)

Bautista has been throwing for roughly a week now, although from a short distance, at least according to Davidi:

It was Zwolinski in the Star today (I saw it in the paper edition). More specifically the article indicated the he is unable to "throw a baseball even close enough to the required level needed to play his position". For all intents and purposes, doesn't sound like he's close at all.

Quite possibly posted somewhere else but I haven't been keeping tabs on the board that closely.

Toronto Blue Jays’ Jose Bautista says pain in shoulder ‘non-existent’ after pre-game throwing session

More from John Lott | @LottOnBaseball

TORONTO – On Monday afternoon, Jose Bautista spoke of “throbbing pain” in his shoulder that kept him awake at night and barred him from playing right field for more than a month.

Blue Jays' Jose Bautista hopes cortisone shot heals nagging shoulder injury so he can return to right-field duty

On Tuesday afternoon, Bautista was playing catch, throwing at 90 feet, and fielding fly balls in right field during batting practice. He said he felt no pain.

The cortisone injection he received on Sunday was working.

“It felt better,” the Blue Jays slugger said after taking his normal turn in batting practice. “One day at a time. So definitely a progression. A different feeling. It’s been a short window since I had the injection, but I feel encouraged by the signs of how it felt today.”

After resting for two days to let the injection work its anti-inflammatory magic, Bautista returned to the lineup as the DH and worked some magic of his own. He drove in five runs with three doubles in the Jays’ 10-9 win over the White Sox.

It was his 25th game at DH since he suffered a shoulder strain while making a throw from right field to first base on April 21.

Before the game, he made about 25 throws, starting at about 40 feet and working up to 90 feet. The pain that had bothered him for more than a month was “non-existent,” he said.

If he continues to progress without pain, he said he believes he can be ready to play right field when the Jays play in Washington on Monday, starting a series in which they cannot use the DH.

“It felt OK,” he said of his throwing session. “The strength’s not there, but normally our strength comes back in our arms fairly quick. So as long as I can remain pain-free, I’ll escalate it as quickly as I can.”

Bautista said Monday that he has an impingement in his shoulder, triggered by inflammation from that throw on April 21. His shoulder had been sore before that, he said.

A cortisone injection typically reduces inflammation quickly. Depending on the injury and the individual, its effects can last weeks or months.

Glad to hear he's progressing well-ish.

Would be nice to open up some roster flexibility with him back in RF.
