Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Look....RA and Mark B haven't been front end rotation studs, but they haven't been THIS bad over the last few years. Beurhle is starting to pitch better. He started off horribly in 2013 too. Hutch is capable of better. What can we expect from Estrada and Sanchez is the issue(s) imo. I also think our pen has the talent to pitch better. Hutch has pitched "11 ip 12 hits 3 runs 2 walks 15 so" the last two starts.

I expect these guys to be worse than last year to some degree. Sanchez is pitching over his head. It's only a matter of time until he gets hammered. Estrada is capable of being an average major league starter (though maybe not in our ballpark with his HR rate). Agree on Hutch though, he should be better than this. And the pen might be fine.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Hutch has pitched "11 ip 12 hits 3 runs 2 walks 15 so" the last two starts. Ya, I know. Lets see if he can sustain the improvement. He put up some seriously poor numbers to start the year. Hope he can. Just took my 6 year old to Houston from Calgary to watch us get swept Fri-Sun. Wasn't pretty although Hutch did a pretty good job Thurs night.

Velocity has little to do with the knuckle ball and if you look at Buehrle's charts, his V isn't much changed. The guy never relied on V. The guy throws goo. One of these years age and wear and tear will be a factor for sure, but even still I don't expect this much regression this season. Don't get me wrong...I thought our pitching WITH Stro might be enough. I am just saying I think these guys will improve over the season (not a very high bar). If you look at the rotations we are competing with nobody has awesome depth 1-5 in their rotation. Sanchez is an enigma. If he keeps up walking people at this rate its going to end very badly. A chimp can figure that out.

The guy throws goo and relies on command. Seems to me there's a good correlation between Dickey's performance and ability to throw a faster KN (max vel): Year Team Vel xFIP 2010 Mets 83 3.75 2011 Mets 82.9 3.95 2012 Mets 83 3.27 2013 Jays 81.6 4.23 2014 Jays 81.2 4.14 2015 Jays 80.1 5.19 Walk rates might have a lot to do with it too though. I don't think you can blame PF that much here.

LTR Verified Member Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 ...so the difference between 2013 RA and 2015 so far is age and 1.2 to 1.5MPH on the KN? I get the impression you don't think that's significant. Personally I think every bit counts when you're dealing with major league hitters... a lot of good pitchers become average or worse when they lose velocity. It's hard to debate the significance of KB velocity. Maybe it has more to do with his inability to throw strikes now, and maybe that has something to do with his velocity loss, I don't know but there's a correlation.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 I don't dispute that there is likely some correlation, but there are other factors including Rogers Centre, AL, command, age (maybe) etc. Bottom line is I don't think he will continue to be this bad all season despite his age.
flafson Verified Member Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 I love Donaldson's face when he says that, it's just awesome.

If we're looking at a past comparable, RA Dickey has had a similar decline age 40 to 41 so far this year to Charlie Hough. So it might not get better although Charlie managed to spin 5 extra years out of it.

I don't think you can blame PF that much here. Losing nearly 4MPH on his fastball since 2011 is big contibuter as well, it's basically just a really bad knuckleball now and it gets hammered. It was a nice pitch for him back with the Mets that he threw for strikes consistently, with the 8-10 MPH difference between his knuckler really f***ing with a batters timing. The Dickey decline is a continuing trend and picking up his option (12M) for next year is looking less likely especially if there is turnover in the front office. Someone stated in another thread he would better suited in a Tim Wakefield type of role, I think he would thrive pitching every other day eating up innings when needed as this young staff endures its growing pains. Its a shame AA didn't address the SP depth to actually make this a viable option this season.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 The pen move I have liked and have asked for many times before too! Super pen arm as he is not what you call a max effort pitcher. Every second Day one or two innings or long man in blow out games! Plus Thole can be sent packing too, clearing room for Navarro when heathy too! Improving the bench. If they pick up his option I will fly to toronto and kick Alex in the nuts, I pray even we can not be that stupid.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Yeah, it's an all-around decline, and he's getting worse. You mean there is a decline at 40? You'd think that when Alex was no longer able to see his feet, much less tie his shoes at 35 he'd realize this.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Nice lol fat Alex always make me giggle!
