Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Where are you seeing 4-6 weeks? From what I'm seeing he's not even going on the DL for sure Guessing/speculation/common sense. A broken rib can really f*** with your swing. He likely goes on the 15-day tomorrow, and misses about a month of the season.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 This roster should have a second viable shortstop. Reyes is not reliable, and we're on season 3 with nothing but crap to back him up. AA has always neglected MIF depth. What is the status of Izturis? lol Everth or Asdrubal Cabrera would be very nice right about now

Laika Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 cracked rib takes 4 weeks to heal if it's left alone and protected. not putting him on the DL just gives the team another bench player who is just taking a roster spot. not guessing. I've had cracked ribs twice and broken ribs once. he hurts like f*** either way. every breath feels like someone is punching you. amazing that he tried to play through it. probably made things worse. time is all that heals them. you really just have to wait. 4 weeks with no baseball. then rehab and hope there is nothing else wrong. thanks Dr. Mod. Obviously Reyes injury wasn't "hurting like f***" because he played baseball for like a week with it. Maybe it's the world's smallest rib fracture in recorded history

It's not good for clubhouse chemistry. Do we really want guys like Reyes and Travis looking over their shoulder all the time, worrying if their job will get stolen if they happen to get hurt? I like rosters that put full faith in their main players. You should sink or swim with your big boys.
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Reyes out for the season?
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Reyes out for the season? Reyes out with a career-ending injury?
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 thanks Dr. Mod. Obviously Reyes injury wasn't "hurting like f***" because he played baseball for like a week with it. Maybe it's the world's smallest rib fracture in recorded history it hurt bad enough that he was playing with a body suit to hold him together, but it didn't help. he was still whinging and clutching the injury. It's probably the reason Goins was up. they knew Jose probably wasn't going to make it, but Jose wanted to try. Remond move would have come eventually... but I think this move was forced because they knew. There was not much of a reaction on the bench either. that kind of tells us they knew he was not well. Look how fast Gibbons and the physio jumped out when Travis got banged up at second. Reyes walked back to the dugout and sat at the end by himself. no one talked to him until he went down the tunnel.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 thanks Dr. Mod. you're welcome sonny.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I still don't understand why he was playing through the bad pain... that never goes well. Terrible coaching no one's Mom told him not to.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I still don't understand why he was playing through the bad pain... that never goes well. Terrible coaching Well part of it may have been that the backup SS was in AAA so you could blame it as much on bad roster construction as bad coaching. The irony is that AA talked a good game about giving Reyes more time off this season but then didn't construct a roster to favour it.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 no one's Mom told him not to. couldn't the team have retained Momma Lind for health awareness position with the team?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 it's not like every team has an all star short stop in AAA as a backup plan. Goins is more than sufficient to take over for Reyes while he's injured. We strengthened our middle infield with Travis. He looks like a rookie of the year candidate. Reyes will be back in 3 to 5 weeks. He probably hurt himself diving for a ball or sliding on a steal attempt. Losing Reyes for a month isn't going to cost the jays the season.

A lot of teams have a utility infielder that's a capable shortstop, and that need is exacerbated when you employ Jose Reyes. Goins is a replacement-level play and not suitable for a major league job in any capacity. You can defend this roster construction all you want, but this type of thing is a big part of what holds this team back.

Terrible coaching I think Reyes injured it while playing in Baltimore while the Jays were still doing well. No one wants to sit down when they are hitting well so he most probably felt he could handle the discomfort without having it impact the team's play on the field. The issue I have with this mentality is that you cannot play all-out with an injury without doing more damage. I am sure he most probably did not know he was dealing with a fractured bone till now. This highlights another issue but I am not sure how it can be handled. It's a pity management do not insist upon an MRI to ensure the real problem is identified and action taken very early in the process.

Yeah they probably thought it was just a very mild oblique thing that could go away without rest. The questionable thing for me is that they publicly stated that Tolleson was going to play short against a LHP on Saturday and Reyes would get a scheduled off day. They said that yesterday before the game. If Reyes is banged up and needs a day off, why not take advantage of Goins who you just called up and give Reyes a day off immediately? Just silly. It's also entirely possible that Reyes himself was being stubborn refused to get tested or to take a seat. Maybe he was determined to play through it and avoid yet another DL stint.

Praxis Verified Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 AA probably made a feeble effort to sign Jed Lowrie, and Jed Lowrie most likely told him to f*** his hat. Why....why did you have to mention Jed Lowrie? Too soon....too painful...
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 Ramon Santiago, Marcier Izturis, Muninori Kawasaki, Ryan Goins. Is Evereth Cabrerra really any better? Drew? Ryan? AA probably made a feeble effort to sign Jed Lowrie, and Jed Lowrie most likely told him to f*** his hat. Whine all you want about roster construction, it's not as easy as you seem to think. yes, yes, maybe.

Santiago, Izturs, and Goins suck. Kawasaki probably sucks. AA has had three years to find a suitable second shortstop to provide value in a utility role behind Reyes and the 2B revolving door has opted not to. That's on him.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Any chance we can go back in time and only trade a few prospects to Miami for Buehrle alone while keeping Yunel, Alvarez, etc? No? Darn.

Laika Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 How about Mike Aviles and Yan Gomes and the Esmil Rogers era never happens? So many good players to claw back, lol. Keep Yan Gomes. Keep d'Arnaud and Syndergaard. Keep Marisnick, Alvarez, DeSclafani. Stroman Hutch Syndergaard Alvarez Sanchez Desclafani Happ? Bautista Pompey Saunders? Pillar Marisnick Donaldson Hech (yuck) Travis Edwin Smoak Gomes/d'Arnaud + a lot of money to sign some players.

Escobar was better than Reyes in 2013, and might be again this year if his offense bounces back. Even if he isnt, he cost 5m a year. More than enough to add players for other positions. I wish AA was more like Alderson. Have a plan and stick to it regardless of impatient fans and media. Might have been better off if he did stay patient looking at how his prospects are doing.
