I don't know/care about the WAR, but I think Norris has the best chance to be a nice piece. Maybe a mid-rotation type guy. I fear Pompey will be almost useless for a little while.

Realistically, its probably going to be Norris unless he gets shut down early. I really want it to be Travis though: 2B has been an eyesore for too long.

It will probably be an every day player. For me, Pompey will provide the most value with Travis taking second, assuming he makes the team and starts 80% of the time.

since Fangraphs warns that WAR is an estimation of approximate value, if all Jays rookies this season produced between (say) 0.5 and 1.5 (or so) WAR, could one really say with any certainty who was most productive?

I disagree. Jays have a mature core and the Astros have nothing much past their prospects.

 

I'm more worried about what kind of year Reyes will have than I am the rookies. Reyes is eating 23M of the salary(more than a 6th of the total budget)

 

I do agree that the jays are risking a little much counting on so many untested players at the same time, but having 35% of the budget tied up in 2 players means having to use young cost effective alternatives to fill "some" positions.

 

The freak Stroman injury has pushed their hand a little because AA didn't get enough depth in the off season. The Astros are planning on sucking to get a lot of early pics to build on. Buehrle and Reyes are making what the entire Astros team makes.

This is a really tough call. There is reason to be very optimistic about all of these players with the way ST has progressed. It seems crazy based on how last year ended but I actually am afraid of Sanchez not living up to expectations more than any of the others. (realizing that he has more expectations than the rest) Not saying he won't perform as well as some of the others, I just think that the rest have the chance to outperform expectations.

 

Castro could become a dominant late innings bp arm. Pompey could hit for avg and dazzle with his speed in the field and on the bases. Norris could use 3 plus pitches to have a Stromanesque breakout season. Travis could play a respectable 2b and move up the line up with his bat. Hell, you could even ad Osuna to the mix with how composed he has looked on the mound.

 

My vote was for Pompey with Norris a close second.

I went with Travis because I think he will run away with the job and a 2 WAR season wouldn't be surprising with full playing time. Castro could kill it, but as a reliever best case scenario is around 1 WAR. Pompey or Norris could surpass 2 WAR, but it's unlikely. Even if Sanchez performs well, He will outperform his peripherals.
