It's interesting to see how people are reacting to this. Obviously no team has another 3 or 4 win starter that can just jump in to replace that kind of production, but honestly for the Jays this is far from the worst injury that could happen. Imagine if it was Donaldson. That could be up to a 7 win swing, when you consider that his replacement would be someone like Goins, Kawasaki, or Tolleson (with the replacement playing either 3B or 2B) putting up replacement level numbers.

Agree with all of this. The Jays can absorb an injury to the rotation relatively well. Ideally it wouldn't be to Stroman but still even with it being Stroman, it's a relatively manageable injury for now. Of course, there will be a cumulative effect if there are more injuries to the pitching staff as less and less capable replacements are brought in.

Yeah, the starting 5 now is still solid. The issue is that there is nothing else that you'd expect to be significantly better than replacement-level. If anyone else gets hurt, or Norris struggles, we're into Sanchez, Redmond, Santana, Hendriks (if he's retained on the 25-man) etc..

This actually got me digging a little and Nationals might be the only team that has the potential. Their rotation projection:

 

Scherzer 4.9

Zimmerman 3.7

Strasburg 3.7

Gonzales 2.6

Roark 2.2

Fister 2.0

How many times has a guy come back from injury then re-aggregated the injury in the recovery stage and missed even more time?

I said Strasburg because the Nats said they were open to moving him earlier, for some reason I thought he had 1 year on his contract, I guess its two. If not I think 3 or 4 other pitchers they have are free agents after this year, all very worthy rotation arms for rental pieces to replace Stroman. What we'd have to give up is another story as I have no clue how to value prospects.
