Pirates are trying to be savvy employing 2 okay/decent catchers with good defensive skills, instead of relying on one great catcher. Cervelli probably won't see the workload of a starting catcher so he shouldn't get paid like one.

 

edit: also, most MLB teams are getting insane value for players like Cervelli whose skills are mainly defensive, because the market just doesn't reflect the value of defense accurately yet

4th best offensive rating for a shortstop in baseball last season per fangraphs is barely average? He is overpaid and his D is definitely declining but try to be objective.

And it still doesn't explain why you said he provides barely average offense when in reality he provides top end offense from his position. Why cant you either provide something to back up that statement or admit you were wrong?
