"Having talked to a number of scouts who have seen Sanchez throughout his minor league career, one name continually comes up – A.J. Burnett.

Before Blue Jays fans balk at that comparison, it’s worth nothing that Burnett has had a long, successful career that most pitching prospects would kill for. The peaks and valleys made for one heck of a ride, but half the longevity and achievement of Burnett would make Sanchez a success story.

The comparison exists because of the pure stuff, and because of an inability to harness it (Burnett struggled with command early in his career). In the bullpen last year, Sanchez appeared to have a better idea of what his stuff was doing, but the track record of guys who walk 4.8 batters per nine in the minors isn’t strong once they get to the major leagues. That explains why PECOTA projects Sanchez to post a 5.49 ERA in 136.2 innings this season.

Between the long track record of wildness and multiple comparisons to a pitchers who battled similar control issues, it will be difficult for Sanchez to turn things around by this season. Even his improved command as a reliever last season came at the expense of his change-up, which he all but abandoned late in 2014.

In the bullpen, however, he was able to get away with his inconsistencies and be more effective. A repeat of his 1.09 ERA is about as likely as him turning into Greg Maddux, but there is reason to believe he can be a successful reliever this year should the Blue Jays decide to change course. There is less confidence to be had about him learning how to throw strikes as a starter overnight."

Aaron Sanchez has about 0.5 seconds of airtime in one of the 2015 Sportsnet TV Promos..

Poor sportsnet gonna have to edit when Aaron is in AA/AAA

This doesn't seem at all healthy.

Times are bad when you have to put Aaron Sanchez in your starting rotation.

No, you're wrong. Times are bad when Chien-Ming Wang is in your starting rotation.

Sanchez did not look like a Major League starter at any point tonight.

I'm sure most people didn't/don't expect him to succeed in the rotation in the short term. He should have been in the pen to start the season IMO.

Sanchez's stuff looked much better in the pen, when he could just go out and let it fly for 15-20 pitches. Than a starter when he had to tone it down to last 7-8 innings.

He definitely didn't look good, but there were some positives. Induced lots of GB's, of course many were hit hard.

To me it looked like he was just extremely uncomfortable (Wasted lots of pitches). But, let's be honest, it was his first career start... to evaluate him I'd like to see a few more where maybe there aren't so many nerves. Giving bombs in the first inning probably crushed his confidence too

Have to agree with this, or in the minors.

I think we'll see in the next 2 weeks what their real plan was with him. I think he has a very short leash and will end up in the pen (where they want him anyway) and they'll use a revolving door for the 5th SP like many teams do

I can't believe anyone didn't see this coming or are upset over it.

In my mind this is the best thing that could have possibly happened.

Think of how sick this looks

Stroman

Dickey

Hutch

Buehrle

Norris

Pen

6th AND 7th inning guys

Sanchez, Osuna

8th Cecil

Closer- Castro

Sure Stroman went down, but that is almost nullified with the emergence of Norris. We can't go back and sign a FA pitcher like we should have BUT we can still make a trade as you should do when your ace goes down to injury.

What you don't do is pretend nothing happened and try to fill a huge void (even bigger with the departure of Happ) with a guy that is filling a hole in the BP.

Also I am not yet convinced that Sanchez can't be a SP someday, but considering what we're trying to accomplish this yr, it's ridiculous to have a guy struggle in the SP role when he could excel throwing 97 out of then pen.

All our top closers were failed starters. Tom Henke, Duane Ward, BJ Ryan, Janssen

What does this even mean? All RP are failed SP or pitchers that were not considered SP material.

What about Cecil? He was a reliever that we converted into a starter, then back into a reliever.

No the best thing that can happen is Sanchez becomes a legitimate SP. Dickey and MB are not going to be around forever.

Also, with respect to Norris, he has not emerged. Keep in mind that Drabek had some good starts early on. There is a massive graveyard of pitching prospects that failed.

So all it takes is one start versus an anemic offense to proclaim Norris has arrived?

Uhh...

K/9: 13.43 BABIP: .288 GB%: 44.2 % ERA: 3.08 FIP: 2.68 XFIP: 2.13

K/9: 12.83 BABIP: .344 GB%: 53.8 % ERA: 2.70 FIP: 2.34 XFIP: 2.51

Without saves, tell me which one of those is Brett Cecil and which one is David Robertson from last year.
