Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I'm for that, whatever it takes to keep Thole off this team But... but... Dickey is COMFORTABLE with him!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Yeah, thinking about it, I agree with you. Between their career splits, Smoak and Navarro favour righties and lefties respectively. I think Navarro should be DHing against every lefty. I didn't realize Navarro's splits were so extreme. Career 78 wRC+ vs righties, 107 vs lefties. Smoak plays 1B against righties, and Valencia plays 1B against lefties. Encarnacion is full time DH unless either Bautista, Reyes, Donaldson, or Martin need to DH for some reason. Don't put Edwin on the field for Navarro. That's stupid.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Probably a top three 1-5 in baseball. Potentially one of the top 1-9 in baseball. Potentially one of the worst 6-9 in baseball. Very unlikely that all three of Pompey, Smoak and Saunders work out how we want. Good chance one or two stink. Though I hope not and believe what you've been preaching, it just seems like odds are against us that everything clicks. You're right on that we shouldn't expect all 6-9 to be productive, but it's also miles better than previous years' 6-9.

I had forgotten about Valencia to be honest. He has a career wRC+ about 30 points better than Navarro. Even if these splits are not regressed, Valencia is pretty clearly better. And he's also much better defensively than Edwin, of course - UZR, in a very insignificant sample, thought he was a god at 1B. There really doesn't seem to be a useful role for Navarro outside of backup catcher
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 There is almost zero chance Navarro starts over Smoak, and for good reason. I'm assuming you referring to the majority of the games, because there is every reason that Smoak should sit and Navarro should DH against some lefties.

Navarro just provides insurance for smoak who couldn't hit right handers either last year. We should probably trade Navarro..lol.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Navarro should not DH against lefties because Valencia can play 1B and Edwin can stay at DH. Keep Edwin off the field and keep him healthy. If Edwin plays 1B, then it should be when they DH Bautista, Reyes, Donaldson, or Martin. I hate Navarro already. You just know Gibbons will DH him more than he should. Trade his fat ass already.
shortstop Verified Member Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Yep, Gibby will play & DH him more than what's best for this team overall. if Martin gets hurt, he gets hurt. Here's hoping AA will get something done by the start of spring training.

It will continue this year unless AA can do us all a favor and dump Navarro to any team willing to take his salary.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Any idea how Hendriks would do in a relief role? I take for granted that he's out of options and just assume he would clear waivers, but he's young with very good minor league numbers. Would hate for the Jays to lose him to nothing, fringy potential or not. I'm getting the sense that Redmond, Drabek, and Hendriks in the same pen might actually happen, unless the Jays are confident they can make it to Buffalo.
