Laika Community Moderator Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 you take the best guys, you can always find a Tolleson on the waiver wire Toronto has a thorough track record of taking the guys without options North, unless the talent or performance gap is huge.
pat_borders Verified Member Posted February 14, 2015 Author Posted February 14, 2015 Farrel did that, Gibbons took the best guys last year
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 Gibbons doesn't make that decision. Managers will always want the best 25.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 Dumb early roster decisions last year included: Esmil on team Kratz optioned, Thole on team McGowan starter Sierra on team? Eight relievers. Is that it? Anyway, expect more of the same. I wouldn't even be shocked to see AA do something as dumb as waive Smoak and anoint Navarro the DH.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 I really have no desire to see Thole on this team. I've dubbed him Dickey's Wife. No one on the team or the organization wants him around, but if you want Dickey...
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 If AA is sincere about Sanchez starting long term, then make him a multiple inning reliever with Cecil as closer. Then they can try to see if he can replace Buehrle in the 2016 rotstion. Of course that will fail miserably, then they can make him a reliever again after that.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 It's funny that people complain about this dude making new threads but it already has 40+ comments in a few hours. He has done what he has set out to do. No fan, not even casuals would expect Ryan Goins in the starting line-up. The misspelling of several names on the roster AFTER an edit is the final dead giveaway.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 I have it like that because Tolleson and Izturis can't be in the minors. Can you explain how that works with Izturis? It is because he was signed on a free agent MLB contract?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Baseball_transactions Veterans' consent[edit] If a player has 5 years of major-league service, he may not be assigned to a minor-league team without his consent. This exclusion applies regardless of whether he has not yet been outrighted once, has remaining options, or has cleared waivers. If the player withholds consent, the team must either release him or keep him on the major league roster. In either case, the player must continue to be paid under the terms of his contract. If he is released and signs with a new team, his previous team must pay the difference in salary between the two contracts if the previous contract called for a greater salary. Thanks! I'd been wondering about this. So options basically become obsolete after 5 years.

In terms of responses, I think a lot of the posters and lurkers here would rather not post in an old 45-page thread that features mostly 5 posters throwing around inside jokes that no one outside the circle really gets. So, keep em`coming.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Thanks! I'd been wondering about this. So options basically become obsolete after 5 years. Yes. Then they have to clear waivers or consent to the move in order to be optioned. That's why those fringe guys with 5/6/7 years of service get bounced around so much. They get waived and claimed all the time.

There's almost no reason not to for the right matchups. How many times a year do you see a catcher leave the game due to injury? If once or twice a year you lose the DH for a few innings, it's probably no big deal.

Yeah, thinking about it, I agree with you. Between their career splits, Smoak and Navarro favour righties and lefties respectively. I think Navarro should be DHing against every lefty. I didn't realize Navarro's splits were so extreme. Career 78 wRC+ vs righties, 107 vs lefties.

admin Site Manager Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Starting 9 1. Reyes SS 2. Martin C 3. Bautista RF 4. Edwin DH 5. Donaldson 3B 6. Saunders LF 7. Smoak 1B 8. Izturis 2B 9. Pompey CF Probably a top three 1-5 in baseball. Potentially one of the top 1-9 in baseball. Potentially one of the worst 6-9 in baseball. Very unlikely that all three of Pompey, Smoak and Saunders work out how we want. Good chance one or two stink. Though I hope not and believe what you've been preaching, it just seems like odds are against us that everything clicks.
