Alvarez is broken?

He's got to be way more broken than originally thought to not be tendered, it doesn't make sense otherwise. If the Jays can nab him though he could be a quality late season arm next year which would make our rotation depth much nicer. He's no Stroshow but at least keeps the ball in the park, relatively cheap and is still quite young. Plus he should still be out property anyway.

Petit and Flowers would be very nice, especially given that the rotation seems lacking in the innings department. Petit piggybacking a start here and there would be great.

#Rays acquire C Hank Conger in trade from #Astros for cash, tender contracts to all 9 arb eligibles

They are probably having a pizza party tonight in Tampa's front office

Framing runs:

2013 +17.2 (6th in baseball but was almost #1 in runs per chance)

2014 +24.9 (1st in baseball despite only playing 80 games)

2015 +3.6 (down year)

a drop off last year...but this is the Rays new Molina

Hanigan and Rivera were also the new Molina. Hopefully this one works.

I really don't understand why Houston felt compelled to give him away for cash (or why they couldn't get more).

they weren't physically Molina enough. This is the Asian Molina Brother (at least in his face...the body will catch up)

Rays really need to get out of TB. So under appreciated even if going forward their payroll won't let them be a legitimate contender in the AL East.

Just getting out of that terrible stadium will make fans everywhere happy.

God damn the Rays are so likeable. Rack up another shrewd move for their FO.

I was so hoping Conger would land here. It would have been a totally cromulent move for a back-up C. The Rays were probably waiting right there the whole time though.

I wonder what Pedro Alvarez is going to get on the market. More attractive bat to have in the line than Smoak. Dat defense tho...

Is the bat really that much better? Alvarez has averaged a 110 wRC+ over the past 4 years. Smoak was at 107 last year and 113 in 2013 (yes I'm ignoring 2014). I'm not sure it's worth the massive drop in defense.

Yup. I'd load up on the Minor and H.Alvarez types as well if the medicals look promising. A pretend small market team like Toronto has to take a chance on some of these types and hope they hit.

how much more is chris carter gonna get than smoak?

Yay lets load up on s*** players who weren't tendered as our depth pieces. This is so exciting, and so par for the course for Rogers

That doesn't make them s*** players... it just means their projected value is not worth the cost to that team, often because their minor league depth is MLB ready and costs 90% less.

I can't believe the Red Sox picked up a s***** non tendered player in David Ortiz like 12 years ago. What were they thinking?

Petit as the long reliever/swing man is what I thought of immediately when I heard he was non tendered. Seems like a good fit assuming it's cheap.

So looks like Navarro is OK with not getting full time reps - him and Avila will have to split time. Wonder how much he signed for? If its not much I wish we re-signed him.

Honestly it's probably his best chance to get as much playing time as possible. He'll get way more time in his partnership with Avila than he did with Martin.

Really man? This is par for the course of essentially every ML team. KC picked up Medlen last year when he was non-tendered...

Padres continue to try to push James Shields in the trade market. Owed $63 million over the next three seasons.

With a 3 WAR projection for 2016, Shields should reasonably be expected to be worth a bit more than his remaining contract.

Some team should want him.

He also has a $16M / $2M buyout option for 2019. So that adds some upside for a team, if he stays effective.
