Hanley Ramirez was a -1.8 fWAR this season where steamer predicts he's going to put up a 2.2 season. It seems illogical to bet on a guy being 4 wins better than last year while apparently playing 1B where he has never played an inning.

Lol oh my God. You have the worst taste.

I was obsessed with AJ Burnett when he played here. Does that help or make things worse?

Yeah I kind of wondered about that too when talking about Boston's lack of holes. Seems like they'll get about average at 1B production from him but it could be a lot worse than that too and be a hole. Corner Infield is probably a weakness and an expensive one at that.

Trumbo was going to make 6,9 Million. A significant chunk of that just went to Aoki which makes sense. Mariners finally recognizing how defense works.

I guess the days of middle infielders playing corner outfield spots in Seattle are over. Disappointing.

Trumbo played middle infield? This is news to me

Ackley, Miller, Franklin, and whoever else they tried in the OF. It was a shot at their previous regime.

He played some shortstop in high school and third base in the majors, but that's all I can find. He's too big to be a middle infielder.

The projection machine might not be smart enough to recognize that he will be at first. It is likely still projecting him as a below average short stop and/or 3rd base with offense returning to career norms.

(to be technically correct, the machine doesn't care that he is at first)

My understanding is that the machine isn't that bright with defense. It gives the guy a rating and the rating is the same no matter where he plays. So say Hanley is actually rated as a neutral defender (-6 to 6) the last few years... the machine will discard the -22 rating last year as a fluke and regress him back to -6 (independently of where he plays)

It doesn't understand that his skill might not translate to left and/or other positions. And I don't think it considers the number of plays at each position.

A's/Padres close to a deal that would send Yonder Alonso and Mark Rzepczynski to Oakland for Drew Pomeranz and LHP Jose Torres

So Ike Davis is firmly getting non-tendered then

Might be marginally better than Smoak.

Doubt it actually. Probably too prickly and I think being extremely talented doesn't help you as a coach.

Seems like often the best coaches are the ones who struggled to find success themselves and had to try everything. That and you have to be patient and observant. Somehow I don't see Bonds being either of those things.

Maybe I'm being too cynical but this Bonds thing seems like a ploy by him and the Marlins.

For them -" look, we got the best hitter otbthe modern era working for us!" PR move to make themselves look better in the eyes of the fans

For him - "look at me, I'm still in baseball and being a good guy. Put me in the hall of fame"

Non regressed splits are pretty dramatic thought that's as much a factor of being terrible against lefties as anything else. He and Cola would probably make a productive 1B platoon but I don't love rostering three 1Bs counting EE.

Bonds' pitch recognition was off the charts. I just can't see how you teach something like that. "You just have to lay off the bad pitches". Easier said than done.

Good point. He was a phenomenal and patient hitter in large part because of that, even before the roids helped him achieve superhuman batspeed and power.

Hmm... who are these coaches? How do we even know who the best hitting coaches are?

Bonds SHOULD be in the hall of fame

It just seems like when players rave about their favorite coaches it's never big name guys.

Question 2 is a good point. How do you really know. Once guysvare in the majors they probably are mostly responsible for their own performance.

absolutely. best hitter Ive ever seen.

PEDs or not 4 seasons over 200 wRC+. Just ungodly. He was great before the roids.

Trumbo and Riefenhauser for Clevenger. Zunino to AAA?

I don't understand why the Mariners would want to do that trade

Must think Clevenger is a frame god or something

Doesn't seem to make much sense, especially with Clevenger out of options.

Like why not just non-tender TRUMBO, keep CJ and sign s***** CATCHER? hmmmmmm?

Well if they were going to non-tender Trumbo (leaving the merits of that out of it for now) and the Orioles were the only suitor, then why not do it?

That's what I thought was happening but then I saw the final trade, where the M's threw in some controllable LHP that they got in that Karns/Miller trade.

For the Mariners, Cleverger is like Happ to us. Sleeper or something
