Who do you think takes the AL Central?

If I had to pick one, I'd probably say Cleveland. I wouldn't die from shock with any of the teams taking it though.

Ned Yost trying to see how much s*** he can pull before the FO fires him. It's pathetic, he basically has a free pass to do whatever the f*** he wants just because the Royals made it to the WS. Yost is ridiculously stupid, I can't believe he is 1 of 30 major league managers.

It really is unbelievable how bad he is at his job. I think he has accrued several years of leash with management before he can be fired though. Should provide great entertainment.

But I thought "managers don't matter"? That's the mantra that gets trotted out to defend all of Gibbons' dumbass moves every year.

Managers can be worth around 1 to -1 wins at the extremes per year

....yeah he's horrible and they went to the WS last year, dumbass. Kinda strengthens the point.

Way to throw out a completely meaningless and arbitrary set of numbers as if you know what you're talking about.

It is funny how much energy this board uses to bitch about managerial moves and then go on to say they have almost no impact over wins/losses.

As teams begin to pare down their rosters towards the magical 25 number, spring training conversation will shift to debating each team's ideal batting order. Because we care, BtB would like to remind everyone that lineups are pretty overrated. Believe it or not, the difference between an optimized lineup and a typical, mildly foolish one you'll see MLB teams use is only about one win over 162 games. It's obviously worth getting right, but not any more than realizing Troy Percival shouldn't be your closer or Joba Chamberlain belongs in the rotation.

Let me get this straight (correct me if I'm wrong): Instead of Goins saving runs with his stellar defense in the infield, we get the luxury of watching Liam Hendriks give up homeruns and deep fly-balls to every other batter he faces.

Hendriks is likely going to be assigned in a few days once everyone else's rosters are set so AA can try and sneak him into Buffalo, at which point Goins will likely be recalled

I'll take the bullpen pitcher over a utility infielder who might play twice a week.

I really think Goins is by far the best infield glove on the 40 man. And if you have a 2 or 3 run lead after 7. I'd want Reyes gone a lot of the time... especially in an effort to preserve Reyes.

I'm not against having a good glove on the bench. However, who actually believes that the Jays are going to bench Reyes late in games for a better defender?

This ain't happening.

These references are garbage. It's only talking about batting line-ups which is, very roughly, 1/3 of what a manager does. Managers also makes in-game tactical decisions as well as bullpen management.

+1

By deploying players in the correct (or incorrect) roles, managers can be worth a lot and are arguably the most valuable member of a team.

There's also the whole motivation, clubhouse chemistry thing which the manager is pretty important in.....

Kluber deal is pending physical. Could someone please tell me what's the point of having a physical on a player that was under the same team's control for the past number of years?

It makes sense if the player is switching teams by he stays in the same place...

As a precaution. You wouldn't want to invest tens of millions of dollars into something that could show signs of breaking. Putting Kluber through a physical will give the team doctors time to determine if his arm is likely to hold up during the length of the contract. (No minor tears, bone chips, etc)

I'm sure there's a basic answer to this - why did the league schedule a day off Tuesday? I've seen this in previous season(s) as well.

I believe it's to guard against bad weather cancelling the season opener.

Teams don't have players checked out when then report to spring training camps? Huh

A lot can happen in 30 days :)

-Carlos Carrasco's deal can max out ~$50M with escalators and options. Guarantee is four years, $22M. Both options would take it above $40M.

-Kluber: $38.5M for five years, potential $77M if all escalators met. $1M bonus. Salaries starting in ’15: $1M, $4.5M, $7.5M, $10.5M, $13M.
