King Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 "I don't do that MLB Network on-base percentage (stuff),'' Phillips told USA TODAY Sports. "I think that's messing up baseball. I think people now are just worried about getting paid, and worrying about on-base percentage, instead of just winning the game. "That's the new thing now. I feel like all of these stats and all of these geeks upstairs, they're messing up baseball, they're just changing the game. It's all about on-base percentage. If you don't get on base, then you suck. That's basically what they're saying. People don't care about RBI or scoring runs, it's all about getting on base. "Why we changing the game after all of this time? If we all just took our walks, nobody would be scoring runs. Nobody would be driving anybody in or getting anybody over. How you going to play the game like that. People don't look at doing the things the right way, and doing things to help your team win. "I remember back in the day you hit .230, you suck. Nowadays, you hit .230, with a .400 on-base percentage, you're one of the best players in the game. That's amazing. I've never seen (stuff) like that. Times have changed. It's totally different now. "But that's just me. "And I don't give a damn what people think about me.'' Brandon Phillips is not a smart man.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Phillips taking pot shots at Votto http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2015/03/23/cincinnati-reds-joey-votto-brandon-phillips-on-base-percentage-rbi/70337854/ Votto, you don't deserve to be on the Reds WOW!! cf
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Brandon Phillips is a f***ing idiot lol
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 I think Phillips is still jelly about Votto getting paid
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 I like how two key guys on the same team have vastly different approaches and STATE AS MUCH IN THE MEDIA. Is there even a coaching presence in the Reds locker room? Jesus Christ, what a train wreck.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 I'm sick of these types of articles. Brandon Phillips doesn't flag down reporters to badmouth OBP - he gets asked directly about it. Joey Votto doesn't call Bob Nightengale to say that RBI are dumb - people ask him about it on the daily. If Votto tried to hit more homers his production would go down because he does what works for his skill-set. If Brandon Phillips tried to take more walks the same would probably happen to him because of his skill-set. If you don't have a great batting eye but you have really good bat-to-ball skills, why not swing away all the time? These articles are shallow and lazy.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Someone needs to tell Philips that he contributes nothing to the Reds winning from an offensive perspective

I was in the midst of typing a similar response before I read what you wrote. These articles are stupid. Phillips has never had a good eye so he relies on making decent contact when he see a close pitch instead of working the count, I don't see a problem with that.

I guess it's just the conviction from Phillips and the language that he chose to express it, but again, he's being prodded a bit here in all likelihood.
bendera3 Verified Member Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Has anyone ever done research on the correlation of OBP and runs scored? It would be logical that the more baserunners there are the more runs that are scored.

Ya like you said it's all about trying to rope him into saying something that some people will perceive as dumb. A reporter's job is to create something that people will be interested in, so can't blame them, but still seems like an irrelevant article and yet people get mad for people starting threads over something interesting to talk about (even if it's not a huge news piece).

That's what bothers me. I don't really mind if a guy is just bad at determining balls and strikes, but the flowery language used by Phillips indicates a JPA like misunderstanding of the game, and an overpowering arrogance and resistance to change. All of these "geeks" have proven that Votto's approach is the correct one from a run production standpoint but none of these guys will pay it any mind.

bendera3 Verified Member Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 You should read Moneyball! I actually have. I know one of the chapters went into specific details on offensive roster construction using OBP as a main focal point, I guess I meant if there has been research done on fielding a team of Vottos vs Phillips.

Votto is like 55% better than Phillips offensively.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 You should read Moneyball! if one enjoyed Moneyball, should also read The Sabermetric Revolution: Assessing the Growth of Analytics in Baseball which calls Moneyball "primarily a good fairy tale."

You mean if there are cascading effects of good/poor OBP hitters arranged in a series? That could be an interesting thing to study. if one enjoyed Moneyball, should also read The Sabermetric Revolution: Assessing the Growth of Analytics in Baseball which calls Moneyball "primarily a good fairy tale." It's definitely dramatized and the true meaning is lost on many people. It's not about OBP and Jeremy Brown, it's about exploiting market inefficiencies. In recent years, that's shifted from OBP to catcher framing and other new ideas. Interesting book suggestion, I'll look into it.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Anyone else not know that Pedro Martinez has a brother who had a 23 WAR pitching career?

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Anyone else not know that Pedro Martinez has a brother who had a 23 WAR pitching career? I knew it at the time. He was definitely a star and Pedro was know as his little brother. The baseball card of them together was pretty popular. http://www.grandstandsports.com/images/17819.jpg I'm really bad at remembering stuff from this long ago though. I'm 39 and the recall just isn't as it used to be. I had to think about it for a while before the memory came back. I'd pretty much forgotten all about Ramon Martinez. IIRC, he faded pretty quickly and dramatically just as Pedro emerged. It's been a solid decade at least since I gave him any thought.
Johnny King Vancouver Canadians - A+ LHP The 19-year-old top prospect has made 16 High-A starts. He is 3-2 with a 2.92 ERA. In 61 2/3 innings, he's walked 35, but he's struck out 83 batters. Explore Johnny King News >
