Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 You're confused. It's statistically impossible that he knows that many people from a random pool of people. I'm a musician, so I probably know a lot more musicians than you do. Hurl is big into that side of baseball, so he naturally gravitates towards other people who are likely to apply for that sort of job. When that is your field, or interest, it's no longer a random pool of people.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 AA doesn't do incentives so we had no shot at Joba. AA mentioned on PTS that he was in on signing a reliever prior to the Winter Meetings but that reliever had two other teams he preferred and went with one of them. I wonder who that was.

Because you're not attracted to them or because you just stereotype anyone in that line of work as being crazy and/or beneath you?

Also, being able to select any one of my 10 Lamborghini's to drive on any given day is not exactly what I would describe as 'wasteful'. Edited February 24, 2015 by Nightmaul

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Just signed-up to the board. Stoked about the Jays this season... a handful of prospects have a good chance to make a positive difference on the team this year and the top and middle of the order will be absolutely leathal. Travelling to Dunedin to check out a couple games in early March (and to get out of this freezing hell for a few days). Let's go Blue Jays! Have fun! Definite bucket list for me is to get to Dunedin during ST.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Have fun! Definite bucket list for me is to get to Dunedin during ST. Don't get me wrong, it's worth going if you've never been, but I always find the anticipation and "thought of it" outweigh the experience. My parents are in Port Charlotte (home of the Rays) and I've been going to games for the past 8 years. In addition to the Rays games (which we go to every year), I've been to Fort Myers to see the Red Sox (at the Fenway replica) and Twins and up to Dunedin twice now to see the Jays. Watched a couple of innings with Tinnish last time I was there. I always seem to leave a little disappointed. The starters typically only go a couple of innings and there simply aren't enough "good" prospects that you want to see play. By the 6th or 7th inning, it's a AAAA game usually. I find the players only sign autographs for kids (which is fine) and most generally seem disinterested in interacting with the fans. My oldest kid is getting old enough to actually start watching the game (instead of just running around). I'm hoping that infuses some interest back in the experience.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 How long the starters go would depend entirely on when you're going since starters need to work up their pitch count throughout ST. The fact that it's not a major league game is probably half the appeal, as most people go to see the prospects and up-and-comers. Fair points. I typically go in early March, which does factor into how many innings the ML guys play. That said - I love the prospects myself. I'd rather see the prospects, I look forward to the prospects - but it always seems like I only get to see a couple of them and for every top prospect, there are 15 Dan Johnson/Adam Loewen types who I'm not interested in watching. I will acknowledge it would be better if could watch Jays games (as I'm much more in touch with even their lower tier prospects) - however, it's an hour and a half away and the park is awful compared to the Port Charlotte Stone Crabs stadium....which is by far the best ST venues I've been in.

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 The batter's box provision seems particularly weird. I understand the desire to speed up the game a little bit, but I really don't see hitters stepping out of the batter's box as a thing that has consistently slowed down games. The most significant impacts on game speed seem to be a) pitchers taking a long time in between pitches, which really adds up over an entire game, and delays in and around pitching changes and commercial breaks. There is also c) delays caused by manager arguments and/or replay periods. But, c) doesn't really amount to significant delays IMO and it also seems pretty easy to address in the context of replays, by making managers stay in the dugout (which they've done) and the general speeding up of the replay process which should occur as the league office becomes more practiced at it. I don't think they accomplish much with the batter's box rule and it actually may slow down the game. It could lead to arguments when it actually gets called, and players who are uncomfortable with it (veterans like Ortiz) might end up asking for time a lot more often before a pitch is delivered. I don't like the idea of making relief pitchers warm up less on the mound because that might lead to more injuries, as guys don't get the requisite number of warm up pitches. Sure, they can warm up 100% in the bullpen in theory, but in practice managers will call them in as soon as they can and pitchers won't be 100% truthful about their warmth. The only true and good solution to me is a pitch clock. Hopefully it works out in minor league trials this year. I don't like the big glaring number and the formal clock idea... I would just support more judicial enforcement of the rule much as it currently is. Let it operate like the 5 second rule in basketball inbound plays - umpire discretion. I don't like the idea of formally penalizing a pitcher who by chance starts his motion at 21 seconds after receiving the ball, provided that pitcher is under 20 most of the time.

Isn't stepping out of the batters box an existing rule that simply hasn't been enforced? Just enforce the rules and make players adjust. We've all seen significant changes made in the NFL and players adapt just fine. If Ortiz asks for time too often - then don't award it (I think they award it far too often as it is).

If I was to head down (need to graduate first!), I think I would be most interested in watching practices, BP and scrim games. Getting a look at the guys preparing for the season rather than watching them play pointless ST games. If Dunedin is anything like the complexes in AZ, having all the fields next to one another would allow me to watch a ton of guys in the same place. I also really want to go to the DR to watch some DWL action. Almost did it a few years ago with my dad, but we decided against it while we were down there. Knowing what I know now, we definitely should've done it.
