Except that what if Bautista and Saunders go down? That isn't exactly an inconceivable scenario. At that point, our outfield is going to be what, Pillar, Pompey and Dirks?

The thing is, that's the kind of player you're generally talking about for a 4th outfielder. In fact, both may very well be above average 4th outfielders. It would be nice to have a DH or 1st baseman who could also play the outfield (or, you know, a Zobrist), but barring that we could do a hell of a lot worse than what we have.

I think our OF depth is excellent. Pillar, Dirks, Carrera.

Depth isn't a problem, but if Bautista goes down, it's like a 4.5ish win outfield. Would like a #2 OF to push Saunders and Pompey down the depth chart.

Should be announcing a Shields signing today or tomorrow, anyone but the Yankees.

Then we can all move on to- The Jays are kicking tires on Papelbon thread.

I still think Tolleson surprises and wins the spot out of ST and moves to the bench designating Izturis in June when Travis comes up.

I think the same thing. His vision has been corrected. He's got the tools. We will see.

you got some awfull standards.,......having depth is nice but doesn't mean much when that depth is s***.

And what teams outside of Boston in our division has depth in the outfield. Most teams 4th and 5th outfielders are s***. Dirks has the chance to actually half decent. Pillar can at least play quality defense. I don't think the difference in carerra, Dirks and Pillar is much different that most teams outfield options beyond their starters with the exception of Boston.

Pillar is a good hitter, and I think this could be his breakout season. The low walks rate doesn't mean he's a bad hitter; he's a free swinger. #LowWalks #LowKs

I am not talking about our division...I also never said no teams have problem areas, the JAys the outfield is one, not a hard concept. The outfield depth is garbage, never said anything about other teams.

So if other teams have no depth either, the Jays still have "garbage" depth? That makes as much sense as not vaccinating your kids.

I like to think any team in any sport is only 3 star players lost to injury away from being average at best!

imo, that's why trading Navarro is important - to open up that DH spot that much more to rest guys, including injury prone Saunders.

imo, trading Navarro is vital to the health of this squad for the upcoming season; if they keep him, Gibby is naturally going to want to get his switch hitting bat in the lineup.

Thing is, Smoak could be extremely bad. At least Navarro is proven to be passable as a hitter. I'd rather they keep him than dump him for nothing just to sign some mediocre reliever.

I'd rather see Tolleson get playing time than Goins. God please no Goins.

Tolleson's MiLB numbers are quite good, I don't know how well he will hit now that his vision is fixed but he's worth the flyer imo.

Exactly right. I like our outfield depth. I'd almost rather have Pillar/Dirks than Davis. But Davis would be excellent in that role on this roster.

Cannot believe how DUMB your post is...the fact that other teams have weak depth has nothing to do with anything, we have s*** depth in the outfield....what do other teams have to do with anything? Strawman arguments.

Crikey... time again for a new message board

Looks like Badenhop and Shields are now essentially off the market, with Badenhop going to the Reds and Shields pretty much a lock for the Padres. FA market is now pretty much limited to very slim pickings.

No great loss imho, I've got a really good feeling with our projected starters.:D

Shields is only almost a lock to SD because nobody else is that interested. It seems like there's still time for another team to jump in.

Apparently the two sides are now at an impasse, only an hour after it was reported to be a virtual lock. I think the only thing to read right now is that both sides have some interest (along with likely a few other teams). Everything else is just click bait.

Really don't get why the Padres want Shields.

I don't either, but I don't think the Jays will be able to compete with an offer from the Padres. I could see another team jumping in, but if he has two offers in the same general price range, there's no way he'll forego San Jose for Toronto.

They seem to really have a thing for "name" talent like Kemp.

I think Kemp could be one of the more valuable players in the game if he's used strictly as a DH. Good thing the Padres are an AL team... or something to that effect.

I'm not sure how much they actually do, but if he comes cheap enough they could trade Cashner for likely a good haul and keep Shields.

According to Bowden (yes, I know), the Padres and Shields aren't at an impasse; the Padres have simply submitted their final offer and Shields only has to decide whether or not to accept. There are several teams still reportedly in the bidding, but the Padres are considered the favorites, and a decision is "expected soon" (as of one hour ago).
