KLaw severely dings pitchers who he doesn't think can start. It's why Luis Severino is off the list.

Rafael Devers at 55 is interesting. This list is very upside-heavy.

He also doesn't let go when he labels a guy bullpen.

severino and Finnegan are pegged as relievers

Hoffman has not thrown game pitch after TJ

Syndergaard isn't a RP. f*** KLaw and his "He'll end pitching out of the bullpen"

Posted
Exactly but our poll put him number four which isn't right either! Fan boys will be fans! Lol

But the guys that went top 3 are listed in Klaw's top 100, in the same order.

How far off the list was Almora? Did he receive serious consideration, or were his offensive struggles so great that he was a pretty easy cut? If he has another offensive season like that in 2015, does he become a former prospect?

Didn't deserve any serious consideration. Call me when he takes a pitch.

f***ing Keith. What a dick.

blake (NC)

ok so no Severino in the top 100? Why

Klaw (1:06 PM)

Why would he be on there?

Steve (NYC)

Will Marcus Molina be on this list next year?

Klaw (1:06 PM)

Unlikely. Future reliever. Live arm, but that's kind of it.

Already pegging Marcos Molina off next years list!

Lol love the attitude.

"Hey, so there's this guy that everyone but you thinks is great, why did you leave him off?"

"Because everyone but me is an idiot."

Severino is an easy top 50 prospect lol.

Cashman (New York)

Why are you low on Luis Severino? He has good fastball and changeup, also just 20 years old.

Klaw (1:08 PM)

That would put him in a group of about 200 right-handed pitchers across the minors.

I wonder how much power these lists have?

Do these affect trade negotiations with real MLB GM's?

If so, there has to be a little persuasion going on, with some of these listmakers.

Because I know in our leagues, it makes a huge deal. Not sure who has Luis Severino, but they'd be lucky to trade him for a 4th rounder now.

Then the BA list comes out and Severino is ranked 35th (my prediction) and he'll be worth a league average major league player or better.

Dahl over Pederson is a head-scratcher for me. Sure, Dahl probably has slightly higher upside, but Pederson is far less risky a prospect.

I wouldn't even say that Dahl has more upside. Pederson looks like a legit offensive weapon.

We can't simply define upside as the sum of a player's tools. At some point minor league numbers/production need to inform upside just as much as, if not more than, scouting grades do.

True. Even the stats suggest that Pederson has higher upside than Dahl, combined with lower risk.

According to that link, only Betts has higher long-term potential value than Pederson using last season's data. It's pretty ridiculous that some rankings don't have Pederson higher up on their lists, barring him not being eligible.

I remember when Law was adamant that Norris' streak of improved starts "meant nothing", now he ranks him #18. Dude is a wad; can't stand people who take black/white stances on things they absolutely can't predict either way.

I think you're referring to this little nugget when Norris was finally putting it together in Lansing.

Jesse (Lansing)

What have you heard about Daniel Norris's renaissance/turnaround this summer?

Klaw

(2:06 PM)

Haven't heard anyone refer to a turnaround or something of the like. Consensus still seems to be a reliever future due to lack of command and trouble repeating the delivery.

What a twat!

Imagine if Gerrit Cole had signed with the Yankees? We can do this all day, lol. Happens to every team, can't dwell on it or you'll drive yourself nuts. Can't give 3M to every high ceiling guy still on the board after the 10th round. Most of them won't turn out and you won't think twice about them. The very very few that do will leave you feeling heartbroken and regretful.

For every Bryant, Paxton and Nola, there's probably 30 guys that the team was unable to sign that nobody can even name without pulling up a list.

Yes, I understand how the draft works, thanks though! :)

Overview

The Jays have dealt away a lot of prospects over the last two offseasons to build a major-league roster that could contend with the big boys in the AL East, so the system is much heavier on long-range prospects, mostly 20 and younger, and is probably as skewed toward Latin American signings as any farm system in the game.

Castro just missed the top 100, working with a heavy fastball up to 96 mph and above-average or better changeup; his slider was a 40 to start the year but improved as the season went on, 82-86 and getting firmer. The main concern is that he's not built like a starter, 6-foot-6 or so and under 200 pounds. If he can handle the workload, he could be a No. 2 or 3, but a relief future seems a bit more probable. Osuna is getting back to close to where he was before Tommy John surgery, touching 96 in the AFL with a solid-average changeup. Hoffman had TJ surgery himself in May and probably won't see a mound until midyear; when healthy, he would sit 93-96 with a hard changeup (perhaps too hard) and a potentially plus curveball. Taking him at No. 9 overall was a bet on his athleticism and the Jays' ability to mold him into a pitcher, rather than a thrower.

Pentecost had Tommy John surgery too, but that was in high school, and he still has a pin holding his elbow together. He actually throws well and is a plus runner, but the question on him is how much he'll hit -- it's an odd setup that produces some late barrel play, and he has to clear that to get the head into the zone. Urena and Dawel Lugo (11) are both promising middle infielders, with Urena more advanced on both sides of the ball, with better feel for contact and some emerging power; Lugo has better tools, but a worse approach, looking for anything he can connect with early in the count. Labourt was surprisingly wild at both levels this year, but the stuff was solid, 90-96 with life and a plus change, although he'll need a better slider to stay a starter. Tirado has plus life on a mid-90s fastball but has to throw more strikes; he's clearly a reliever going forward, but still, those guys can't walk a man an inning either.

Mitch Nay (12) and Matt Dean (15) get some attention for good batting averages in the low minors, but neither has the power he'll need to profile at first base, where Dean is now and Nay seems likely to end up (or perhaps right field). Right-hander Sean Reid-Foley (13) was a polished high school pitcher whom the Blue Jays took in the second round, working mostly 91-93 in the spring with an above-average curveball. He has mid-rotation upside, but there's some reliever risk there as well. Toronto's big international signing this summer, Juan Meza (16), is a 6-foot right-hander with an average fastball and changeup and major-league average command already.

People still value Law's opinion on prospects?

The guy knows s***. Still waiting for Zach Stewart to become the four pitch ace that he was projecting.

then don't read the thread. Law is sarcastic and very opinionated, but he does his work and forms his own rankings. There are others out there, but Law is pretty good and you can read McDaniel, Callis etc to get a bunch of opinions. no one is perfect in their assessments, not close.

Ve y lame las calvas bolas de Jonathan Mayo!!

Odd if true. Law is usually pretty trigger happy when it comes to labelling guys as relievers... The Jays seem to think that of Castro yet if Law has Castro at 4 then he must not.

Mike posted the write up in the page before. Funny thing is he does say Castro is probably going to be a reliever long term. Curious to what he thinks of DSJ as there was no mention of him at all.
