glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 According to Heyman, Donaldson submitted $5.75M and the Jays submitted $4.3M.

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 They have him for 4 years... how much longer do you want to commit to a guy who's only been good for 2 seasons? He wasn't actually bad for a prolonged period in the majors before the two years, just an unhyped prospect at an advanced age. You don't have to buy him being a 'changed' player necessarily, just a player who is different from his prospect scouting reports. And very many players are different from their prospect scouting reports. Offer him a seven-year deal with a club option tacked on. 6, 8, 10, 15, 16, 16, 18, (20, 3 buyout)
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 According to Heyman, Donaldson submitted $5.75M and the Jays submitted $4.3M. I feel like the Jays submission might be a little low given recent salary inflation (and yes I know that they are going to come in a bit lower than what they would settle for normally). This is one instance where I think we may have been better off coming in a little higher than the projections (4.75 maybe), and pretty much assure ourselves of winning. Assuming we go to arbitration and don't have a multi-year deal signed instead, this feels like a case Donaldson might actually win imo.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Yeah, I think Donaldson wins this one. Either that or we get a last minute long-term deal announced.

MLBTR projected $4.5M for Donaldson, which is very close to the Jays $4.3M. The arbitrator will look at past comparables and not necessarily put much weight in inflation or advanced value calculations. I'm assuming they'll agree to a two- or three-year deal ahead of time though.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 So the Tigers avoided arbitration with Price by signing him to a 1-year 19.75 MM deal. Damn.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 So the Tigers avoided arbitration with Price by signing him to a 1-year 19.75 MM deal. Damn. Pretty reasonable considering his huge season last year. He's going to cash in next offseason barring an extension.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Really? It's pretty rare to see multi-year deals that don't take the player out of arb. You're probably right. Maybe it'll have to be a four-year deal then.

BTS Community Moderator Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 $12.5 M for Porcello seems steep.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 $12.5 M for Porcello seems steep. Price got 19.xx so yeah Porcello seems steep, he's a mediocre pitcher who overachieved last year, and people think he's good because he came in when he was 19. I'd rather have Happ and his contract for a year.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 $12.5 M for Porcello seems steep. It does, but it kinda doesn't surprise me either, given that he was a super two. Donaldson's fourth arb will probably set a record if they don't extend him by then.

Given the somewhat formulaic nature of arbitration, that might be one reason the Blue Jays were unable or unwilling to reach a middle ground with Donaldson and avoid arbitration. Maybe playing hardball for that extra million saved on his 2014 salary turns into saving around 3 million in his fourth year arbitration salary, due to how arbitration numbers seem to rely heavily on the previous years' amount.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 I was actually surprised to see them file so high. It's a super 2 start. Not a 3+. Hosmer got 3.6M as a Super 2 last year (and Ike Davis 3.2M the year before). I think that sets the bar...if the Jays came in that low they'd likely end up with paying out Donaldson's ask. I suspect we'll see a midpoint deal if it goes to arbitration (5M)...which if I'm not mistaken would put him 4th all time for super two's (Howard 10M, Posey 8M and Lincecum who accepted two years 23M)

TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 The Jays have stated in the past that they won't negotiate after the numbers are exchanged, if I'm not mistaken, unless it's a multiyear deal. MLB considers it a waste of time for these cases to go to hearing, the first arbitrators meeting is usually about trying to get a settlement and then the two sides can save face in the public's eyes and say "came up with a last minute deal". I really think the Jays end up amending their File to trial policy and look for a middle ground...unless they are confident they will win (which I'm not). The Nats, Pirates, Indians and Brewers were hard line file and trial teams, who now consider them selves File and Trial by case. I think the Jays, Rays, Braves and White Sox are the last full file and trial (or file to trial as I prefer) teams. The Jays just haven't been tested on it in so long.

Maybe playing hardball for that extra million saved on his 2014 salary turns into saving around 3 million in his fourth year arbitration salary, due to how arbitration numbers seem to rely heavily on the previous years' amount. That's exactly what I gathered from it when I first heard the gap in the figures. Seeing as how the next year arb is almost always a raise on the previous year barring serious injury, Donaldson's year 1 salary is actually incredibly important. The difference between the two figures exchanged isn't limited to what you see there, there's a difference of several millions down the road. What a start to Donaldson's career in Toronto "Welcome to Toronto, Josh Donaldson! Now here are the reasons why we don't think you're worth X" Ya, that can't be good. Talk about pissing off your star player. WTF is wrong with that FO, fking adiots. That's how Alomar's career started in Toronto too. That clearly had disastrous consequences for the Jays, didn't it? If Donaldson gets his feelings hurt from this, it's not the fault of the Jays, it's because he's a prima donna.
