Kawasaki has a better bat (and does funnier interviews), but worse defense. Goins has the defense, but a worse bat. As the 25th guy on the roster, give me the defense and tell Goins to eat bananas on the bench and say "monkey's never cramp" during his interviews from now on.

Racist.

Reading through this thread just reminds me how crap our options are at 2B. Besides Travis (who is a big ? himself) all the options are replacement level or most likely worse. We should really try to upgrade if we can because this team could be a hell of a lot better with a competent 2nd baseman.

I think if you give Izturis, Tolleson, Muni or even Goins every single AB at 2B for a whole season, they'd all have a plus WAR value. Not much more than 1.2 or something, but they'd all be better than 0. Not that I'm saying we don't need to improve there.

Just 'cause it's fun, I will deal in hypothetics. If they played a full season, they would accrue the following WAR value...

Izturis = 1.2

Tolleson = 1.4

Muni = 0.9

Goins = 0.2

The thing with Izturis is that he got signed before even the Marlins trade. I feel like every argument for him getting playing time is partially based on "well we're stuck with him, might as well use him". He's like leftovers that you're forced to eat because the only alternative is throwing actual food in the garbage.

I'd honestly prefer a Goins-someone platoon. Tolleson I guess? Not a great option either. The 2B situation really sucks. Hopefully Travis shows up at the door sooner rather than later.

So is Marcus Stroman. Major league contract is irrelevant. Izturis can deny on option request though.

"They signed him as a free agent to a major league contract." Who cares, my point was that site which was referenced didn't account for this, since it says almost everyone (Bautista, Reyes, etc) are not out of options.

According to RosterRessource, the only 2B option who doesn't have options is Tolleson. Even Maicer theoretically can be sent down at no risk.

http://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-toronto-blue-jays/

By my calculations our hitters by options remaining (I have only listed players with less than 5 years major league service as anyone with 5 years cannot be sent down without permission, so they pretty much have no options as almost all of them would declare themselves a FA)

Donaldson 0

Saunders 1

Pompey 3

Thole 1

Smoak 0

Tolleson 0

Pillar 2

Jimenez 1

Colabello 1

Goins 1

Hague 0 (roster resource doesn't have this but I'm pretty sure I'm correct)

Valencia 1

Jays are apparently interested in Everth Cabrera - probably gonna wait until after his legal issues get resolved though (April) before any official offers are made.

He's trouble but with Travis waiting in the wings, the Jays would at least have a plan B if they decide to cut bait. Signing him would make a considerable amount of sense but it would also fly in the face of the whole notion of creating a positive clubhouse.

AA has to have at least one reclamation project this off season.

Yeah? Are you sure? His fall ball numbers weren't impressive. And even if he, say, was like 0.6 WAR in CF, other teams that are in contention are producing far more than that at that position.

lol, nearly every evaluator that observed the AFL said Pompey was one of the most impressive prospects in the league.

Jim Callis: "Pompey has continued to stand out with the Solar Sox, batting .283/.358/.417 with six extra-base hits and eight steals in 15 games through Wednesday. He's the most talented speedster and best all-around player in the Fall League."

I remember reading that he ended up with a .248 BA. I'm sure you're correct, but then what the hell was I reading?

That's great, I love this kid and I hope he wins ROTY. He has a definite chance playing in a premium position.

What would it take to get Marwin Gonzalez from the Astros ? Would we want him? Plays several posistions, upgrades our bench and a switch hitter.

I thought about this too... super affordable too.

Of course Goins, he needs to be super terrible at the plate for me to pick Izturis over him, like JPA 2013 bad.

Goins posted a .472 OPS last year. That's super terrible and worse than JPA circa 2013 at the plate.
