BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Ok how about a Reyes and Navarro plus 12 mil this year and 6 mill the next two, would that be enough to temp Seattle into another trade? We add one of DJ Davis or Anthony Alford and Robert Osuna! So they really appear to win the trade and we shed salary. In return to off set the money they are taking on even more we ask for Willie Bloomquist and Danny Hultzen taking another almost 5 mill off thier books along with Dom Leone and Patrick Kivelhan to us! Would this be close and fair trade for both?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 So we lose our starting shortstop to shed a few million each year while giving up a potentially valuable prospect (or DJ Davis) and get nothing in return. Yeah, I'll pass.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Ten mill mill net savings is more then a few! Dom Leone maybe better or equal to Cecil in the pen! Kivelhan is young and profiles as a better 1st baseman then 3rd future depth plus can play third and Lf as well. Bloomquist can play what Six or more positions on the field, depth! Danny Hultzen is a flyer but not exactly chump change either! Plus with the savings I am signing Shields ASAP just for you! Better? Shields,Dickey,Stroman, Buehrle,Hutch f*** that is Sexy! Yes that is why I rid myself of your oft injuried starting short stop! The pen with Delbar,Loup,Leone,Cecil and 3-4 other guys should be fine! Plus signing shields takes innings from the pen too! Win win win!

Free your mind and the rest will follow! Sometimes the optics of the trade appear to be a lost yet you win! Can't win em all or no trades would ever happen! It sometimes called a lost leader in the real world! s*** happens in the now leading to bigger and better future moves!
Gorlak Verified Member Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Navarro will bring in a bad reliever or a non prospect. Should still trade him since he asked, but the return will be almost nothing.

Win win win! would love for this situation to come forth, however the financial restrictions will not let it happen. We are stuck with Reyes - unfortunate. We will not acquire Shields - no money available, also term issue may come up

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 AA must not be all that motivated to move Navarro. He must like him enough in a spare catcher and a spare bat role to not settle for a crappy return. His "shopping" of Navarro probably has a much to do with placating the player than with addressing team needs.

Navarro would be a good backup catcher and he is currently the teams best option at DH, unless they find somebody to play first. AA has likely made it known he is available, but he has probably just got teams offering to take him off their hands. Once the better options are off the table he may receive more interest. Also he only wants a trade so he can be the starter, but most teams likely view him as a backup.

I didn't anticipate going into the season with Navarro on the team (in fact I still don't), but I wonder what the average batting lineup looks like with him in it. Likely Edwin at first, Navarro DHing, and Martin DHing when Navarro catches. Is the more 'sure thing' bat of Navarro worth keeping Edwin on 1B over Smoak or Barton? Is Navarro's bat even a sure thing? We ran an Edwin-Lind 1B platoon for the last couple of years, so surely we could be worse off, I suppose.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted December 22, 2014 Author Posted December 22, 2014 EE is going to dh 75% of the time. He wants that and his 1b defense is awful
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Smoak is starting at 1B with Edwin at DH. I see no reason to change that for Navarro (although if they can find a better 1B than Smoak, then make the change). If Navarro is still on the team Opening Day, then he'll likely back-up Martin.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 You guys really need to get the idea of Navarro DH out of your heads. He is not that good of a hitter. Smoak probably out-hits him.

Gorlak Verified Member Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Smoak is terrible, hopefully they end that experiment quickly.

Not a good DH, but better than smoak or Pillar. Smoak will be starting at 1B and EE at DH. I think it's clear AA is valuing defense more than the past. Steamer thinks Smoak is an above average offense player, and he's a much more competent defender at 1B than EE. Get him out of Safeco and see what he can do. I expect AA and Gibby to be patient with him.

He was a big time talent - I think it's worth a shot.....although I'd prefer if he was one of the only "gambles" we had to take. Good news is - 1st/DH has to be the easiest position to "fill"....if this is our "hole" - it's a great place to have one IMO.

Well, he did say he wasn't giving him away, had to make sense for the team, going forward, that's why I think it'd have to be a decent RP or nada.
