Scion Verified Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 So just to be clear, you're saying that a 33 year old Japanese player who has apparently been playing for 11 years and had over 5500 at bats is a real "find" and that he trumps anyone else currently on the market, such as a Jed Lowrie? And who here had even heard of this guy until his name emerged in the last 48 hours? And yet we can't make any assumptions about what he might bring to the table over a proven major leaguer? Wow. Just....wow. I'm new to this board, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems like the type of post that warrants an account deletion, no?
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Damn, for just this minor signing he's almost as pissed as I was when the Jays traded Syndergaard for Dickey lmao.

Scion Verified Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Lol. You signed up the first month this board was created. I did, but I stopped frequenting this board almost immediately after creating my account. Until now anyways.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I did, but I stopped frequenting this board almost immediately after creating my account. Until now anyways. How come?
wardhenke1 Verified Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I did, but I stopped frequenting this board almost immediately after creating my account. Until now anyways. Well thank god you came back when you did to call me dumb and then for my account to be deleted when I responded entirely with factual information about this Japanese player. If this signing comes true, it would be an indication that as an organization we have decided that Devon Travis is the answer and that any warm body will do to plug up the gaping hole at 2B in the interim. I respectfully(!) disagree, especially when an excellent, viable option is on the market who can play all positions in the infield and who is not ridiculously expensive in either cash or term.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 How come? Would you want to spend much time here during May of the 2013 Blue Jays season?
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Damn, for just this minor signing he's almost as pissed as I was when the Jays traded Syndergaard for Dickey lmao. No guys like him won't be happy until we spend big money on a "big time reliever" because that is the right thing to do...... We could have signed anyone this off season but if they don't do what they want to do at 2nd base they are done for life...... What a f***ing stunned ****..... Makes me feel a lot better about myself
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Would you want to spend much time here during May of the 2013 Blue Jays season? Yes? It was that or the old board at the time.

Dude you have no idea what Lowrie will sign for. Could be something stupid like 3/30. Most free agents so far have signed for alot more than people on this forum thought they would sign for. McCarthy for example. It would be stupid to sign Lowrie to 3/30 when we have Travis waiting in the wings, and bigger/more important needs in the bullpen and rotation.

Makes me feel a lot better about myself With all due respect, that doesn't sound like it would be too difficult. And I did not say anything about a reliever genius, but bra-f***ing-vo for joining in the chorus. Oh and I couldn't give two shits about what you think or assume I think. I've been supporting the BJ's for over 25 years and remember the last time we won a world series with a pretty good 2B. But heh, who cares right?
Scion Verified Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 How come? It had less to do with this board, and more to do with my general disdain towards how this team was being run.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Your up. #LoD Made my pick. Thanks

Thank you for the first reasonable and intelligent response to me on this issue. I hear what you're saying, but I'm not as confident as some on here that Travis will turn out to be what we might hope for. I remember when Brett Wallace was considered a sure-fire IB for example or Deck Mcguire was considered the 'safe choice' as a guaranteed 3rd or 4th starter. While Travis develops (he hasn't as yet even started in AAA) it would be good to have someone like Lowrie for 2-3 years when we are apparently building a team for the now.
Cyris Verified Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I don't know who this tortilla guy is and I don't f***ing care. There are better options out there right now on the market and the money and contract length for them would not be obscence. $30m for 3 years for Lowrie and we are turning away? ********. And what if Jed Lowrie doesn't want to sign here? You seem to assume its as easy as just signing any player you want and reality doesn't quite work like that. We also dont know for sure how much is left in the budget. If it is 20m or less like is being suggested by many in the media should we really blow half of that or more on lowrie when there are holes to fill in the starting lineup and bullpen. But seriously continue to flip out and have a meltdown about just the possibility of a low risk signing...

Ok I'm calling time on this one. In the words of Mark Twain “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” I'm done. Do whatever the f*** you want.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 So is this happening or not? If he can make almost 4 million in Japan it seems like wed have to give him at least a 2 year deal in the 7 or 8 range.

He may really want to get a taste of the major leagues while he's still young enough to have a chance to. There's also a matter of drawing a major league pension if he comes over for a year or two.

I think he'd be a great fit for this team. But I don't know how much AA has to spend. If we only have another 10 million to play with, we should be improving the bullpen and rotation because our offense is pretty good already. If its more like 20/25 million that we have, then AA should be all over Lowrie.

Santos Verified Member Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 @bluejayhotstove: For what it's worth, Japanese media are reporting the Jays are working on a 3yr/10 mil deal with Takashi Toritani. @AndrewStoeten: New at http://t.co/AQ8cw0y2ED: Japanese Media Not Saying Jays Have Signed Toritani, But They Are Saying Something http://t.co/JcrV5Adv99 Is this guy any good? No real sources. Best part of signing could be that we dealt with boras. I like that you referenced @bluejayhotstove....he doesnt have any sources of course but the guy sparks up some good dialogue on twitter i find....3 nights ago i think he mentioned Navarro to Arizona for reliever makes too much sense and 48 hours later it was all over the news. Im not against this Taritori signing or whatever his name is...people talk about Lowrie and Asdrubal like they are superstars....Lowrie was so so last year and Asdrubal hasnt had a good year since 2012. He was awful last year. I cant imagine this japanese guy being any worse

I would hope our budget is sufficient for the latter scenario, but I guess we'll find out. It will really hurt to see Lowrie elsewhere however. We haven't had a reasonable player at 2B since Aaron Hill and that's a long time.

I think he is a decent player but for the term/$ he is going to get he might not be the best fit.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Got to figure that the Beest is truly out of the picture now if Boras is dealing with the Jays
