I think, in the long run, you'll be happy that you guys didn't re-sign Markakis. It's s***** watching a guy who grew up with the team go like that, but I can't believe he'll be worth the contract he signed, his skills are diminishing quite a bit. He's probably a league average player in 2015, and probably below average moving on.

I could not believe he got that from Atlanta. And then to have the surgery like three days later? 3/30 was the max I wanted to do just for nostalgia. But I'm happy that deal didn't go down.

Jerry Howarth + Mike Wilner for DD is fair. Maybe a little bit of cash thrown in by the O's.

But then we'd need to hire a new ignoramus to yell at angry casuals!!! Not a great deal for the Jays.

Posted
If the O's didn't have the intention of bringing him back, he'd be in Toronto already. He's going to be there whether he wants to be or not unless the Jays give in... so now its up to Duquette to show whether he's a professional or not. Once his contract is up, he won't be able to get another job if he shows that he will let something like this distract him from doing his job and half ass it.

Oh the irony.

I think Zaun could slide into that role quite nicely... Though, I'm really not sure Zaun could keep himself from swearing at people CONSTANTLY. (Frankly, I don't know how Wilner does that..)

Yea I would have to agree. Scherzer wants 200 million and we all know he's not getting that from us. Shields to me doesn't see much of an upgrade. I don't think the Orioles give up the value to get a top of the rotation starter. The Orioles will have to solely rely on Gausman or Bundy to get them to the next level. And we all know how there's no such thing as a pitching prospect...

Since I'm here, tell me about Colby Rasmus. The Orioles are rumored to go after him. I remember when you guys got him I was totally jealous. I believe he was rumored in the Bedard trade long ago, but don't quote me on that one. Did he just have a falling out here? He had some solid seasons.

Peter Angelos, the consumate professional.

Loyalty in sports is overstated. Players, managers and execs all move teams to earn more cash and/or an increase in title. Being a professional is as much about honouring contracts, as it is about allowing others to succeed as well.

Although unlikely we trade with a division foe in the first place, DD taking the CEO job in Toronto would almost certainly cement any deals from happening between the two teams while Angelos is alive.

What you guys are failing to understand is it will happen regardless of whether you feel it needs to or not. If Angelos doesn't budge, a third party will make it happen. It's basic business practice.

I'd like to hear all these clown's responses to being denied the opportunity to advance their careers.

Good luck with that.

Good luck with that.

All I ask is when all of this is over, one way or the other you remember this thread. Come back so that we can revisit and discuss the outcome.

Come on you can do better then that.

Don't get him started.

Also, your "good luck with that" comment will make you laugh so hard when (if) this deal gets done and you see the perfectly appropriate return that the O's get (ie. Not a major return...)

I'm probably more of a Rasmus guy than most on here, but really, you have no idea what you're going to get from him, other than a lot of strike outs and some truly impressive home runs. When he makes contact it's a thing of beauty, but he can get cold fast, and for long stretches.

Also, he's a lot better in the field than most give him credit for.

Ah, well maybe he has another 4 WAR season and the O's can get a draft pick. I doubt neither party wants more than a year. He can establish his value and get a long term contract from someone, and the Orioles get some production. I don't think there is such a thing as a bad one year contract. I'd wager he would have a better year than Pearce or De Aza.

I'd be tentatively nervous if he signed in the AL East...

I never got the hate for Toronto. I was 3 when the whole All Star game thing went down, so I don't feel that hate. I wasn't there. I just didn't hate Toronto and Tampa when the Yankees and Red Socks are in the same division.

This is probably a good time to buy low on Colby Rasmus. There really doesn't seem to be much of a market and he could provide good value for cheap as a bounce back candidate. Offensively, he's a frustrating player to watch. He can disappear for long stretches and he'll really, really look bad during those stretches, like "how does this guy ever make contact" bad and his forlorn, depressed looking demeanor just re-enforces that. He (usually) bounces back though and when he's on, his swing is a thing of beauty and generates really nice lift. Up until last year, he provided enough value on defense to make him not totally useless even when he's struggling at the plate but last year was a very bad year defensively and it was one of those cases where casual observation and defensive stats were in complete accordance about how bad he was. He blamed a lot of his problems on the turf. He said it messed with him physically and he just couldn't go after balls anymore. If playing on turf really was inhibiting him (and not just an excuse, the Rasmus clan is big on excuses especially the patriarch) than he could bounce back defensively and that would give him a much better floor. That would go a long way to making a Rasmus signing a good one. The fact that he's an unapologetic hick-ass hick and that he always seems to be looking for redemption made him pretty popular with Jays fans up until last year's fiasco.

The Cito thing was from a different time. It doesn't make sense for some to still hold that against Jays fans when there are hardly any fans left who would still defend Cito. He's barely more popular around here than he is on an Orioles board.

I guess I can tolerate it for a year. I don't De Aza is the answer and Pearce just seems like a one year wonder. I guess for one year, why not take a chance? There are many more ways to screw up 6-8 million dollars

Of course, I also never hated the Colts, guess it was a had to be there kind of thing....

Hard to go wrong with a 6-8 M gamble on a guy with 4-5 win upside. He'll at least be a solid 4th OF.

I guess they are thinking Jones, Pearce, De Aza, Lough and Young for OF/DH and some kind of platoon rotation and that 6-8 million is too rich for what he could be used for. Of course he doesn't seem to be pursued hard by anyone, so I guess they are waiting for the price to drop.

Good thing AA isn't likely involved in these negotiations with fellow Greek Angelos. Otherwise I'd expect a barge full of lambs and tzatziki on its way to Toronto, with Pompey, Norris and Hoffman on their way to Baltimore.

Listening to the radio here in Baltimore. Jim Duquette is on.

1. Apparently you cannot trade major league players for office personnel. So it has to be minor league players. Players Association wouldn't allow it. (I don't know the validity to this)

2. It's sounding 50-50, would not bet the house either way

3. Baltimore is desirable place to be now, what's wrong with letting a GM develop and move on.

4. Mentioned the Orioles would obviously take good prospects for DD (Well duh, players play the games...)

Didn't get to hear the beginning of the convo, I'll let you know if the segment is played again

1. This is true, whenever so-called compensation is sent, there's always a minor leaguer coming the other way. It happened with Farrell as was discussed ITT.

2. If he says so.

3. As many have pointed out, Baltimore gets less desirable the more Angelos digs his heels. He's just confirming that the Orioles may be better but he's still the same old Angelos.

4. Angelos is a bit of a hypocrite. He talks big game about the importance of honouring a contract but he would tear it up himself if a good prospect were on the table.

Ned Colletti please, for the love of God. He'd tank that org in no time.
