saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 As a fan I just don't enjoy watching Happ pitch one bit haha. he's got a decent fastball. He could actually be a good reliever. So many starters who have one good pitch, but not 3 decent pitches let their ego get in the way of transitioning to a bullpen role where they will thrive. Sanchez has way more upside. When is he going to be ready? Who knows. He showed signs of it last year in relief. Will that transition to him as a starter. Clearly it's not apples to apples...being a reliever and a starter are a different ball game, but I don't put the stock in minor league numbers that some do. If Sanchez comes to camp and looks good being stretched out he's in the rotation and happ goes to the bullpen. I don't need to see the kid dominate AAA before seeing him in the majors.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Bring back Kawasaki and I'm serious. Our issues are LF, 2ND, RP and a bit of SP. Our rotation has depth and might be able to hold things together I'd like to see Shields but I doubt it. If we can resolve 2 out of 3 ( LF, 2ND, AND RP ) I will be happy. I prefer LF, and RP. At the same time keeping mind our bench and making upgrades there. Our lineup is looking great to have a few question marks is normal. I would roll with a platoon at 2nd that specializes in defense and upgrade LF and RP. AA is going to make a few more moves that's for sure.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Jed Lowrie makes to much f***ing sense If Reyes gets hurt then he can shift over beautifully and then hopefully Devon Travis will be ready to make some sort of an impact. Lowrie makes sense too and would have suggested him if I thought he'd come here on a 1 year deal. But it's likely a 3 year investment and I'm not sure about that. Why is no one talking about Kenta Maeda? Is he not getting posted this year now?
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I think he'd be okay on a 3-year. Scutaro-like after this year, super-sub. He plays 3B and SS pretty well actually. Count me if for Jed Lowrie.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 LOL, why is Ricky Romero the third most searched player on FanGraphs right now, behind only Donaldson and Lawrie? Because the only people who actually use Fangraphs are all on this message board?
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I think Aoki would be a good pickup. We need another outfielder, and he's a left-handed bat with good OBP, which is what our homer-happy team needs. Would only have to give him three years max, and might even be able to get him for two years.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 Another consideration for signing Shields or McCarthy..... MB comes off the books after 2015, Dickey is another year older (and standoffish). Just watching a guy like Shields go about his business both on and off the field will help guys like Stroman, Sanchez, Norris, Osuna, Hoffman, etc reach their potential.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I wouldn't say Mayberry/dirks is the plan because it seems like the plan is to get a LF and 2B. I also don't think Izturis can play SS at all. Donaldson is probably 5x better at SS than he would be. I misspoke slightly when I say that's "the plan", but moreso that's what the current situation is if no other moves are made.

Jays need rotation spots for Norris and Sanchez so unless they trade one of Buerhle or dickey another pricey starter will just handcuff the team.

Norris and/or Sanchez are not in the 2015 rotation unless there is an injury. And there will be an injury to at least one SP. MB and Happ are both in the final year of their contract. Provided they continue to pitch well in 2015, including in their stints with the Jays, Sanchez and Norris replace MB and Happ for 2016.

He's a cute mascot but if Kawasaki is playing u are worse off then having goins out there

They don't need rotation spots for Norris or Sanchez in 2015. They both have options and would greatly benefit from working in AAA for more than 22.2 and 34.1 innings respectively.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 Except Kawasaki is below average at defence. He's a cute mascot but if Kawasaki is playing u are worse off then having goins out there Agree. Kawa's days with Jays are over. Goins and Berti in Buffalo are both better options. Berti can play multiple positions.

Even in that scenario Jays won't have any extra Rotation spots for another starter since they will both be ready this year. I hope Happ is gone by spring training, They can use Estrada until Sanchez is stretched out then put Estrada in the Pen. If Sanchez blows it he moves to closer and Norris replaces him in the rotation.
GNick49 Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 They probably keep Sanchez as closer unless they find a taker for Happ.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 Kawa > Goins/Berti At the plate Kawa > Berti > Goins In the field Goins = Berti > Kawa On the basepaths Berti > Goins > Kawa Overall Berti > Kawa = Goins IMO!

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Aoki has reverse splits and doesn't do anything to improve the lineup vs RHP which is what needs to be addressed. This team has been transformed from one that kills RHP to one that's going to slaughter lefties. I'd say Markakis is a much better fit for this team. Does Sanchez+Osuna+Travis+DSJ get you Altuve? He'd be my target right now if i'm AA. They're just wasting a premium talent for the next four years in Houston anyway. Reyes Markakis Donalson Bautista EE Martin Altuve Smoak Pompey Who gives a fck what the pitching staff looks like with that O. wow....lay off the crack..I think that's a bit of an overpay for Altuve..lol.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 A combined 50 innings of AAA ball and they're both ready for 2015? Slow down I didn't say ready for spring training, but they will be ready this year. Neither need an entire season in AAA. Stroman pitched 35 innings in AAA.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Kawa > Goins/Berti At the plate Kawa > Berti > Goins In the field Goins = Berti > Kawa On the basepaths Berti > Goins > Kawa Overall Berti > Kawa = Goins IMO! . Thank you as I said Sign Kawa he can help at SS and 2ND has a good bat and is an awesome presence in the dugout. Sign as a bench player / role player. Upgrade LF and RP
Gorlak Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Also Sanchez and Norris are talented players, this isn't like trying to squeeze Nolin into the rotation.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 Also Sanchez and Norris are talented players, this isn't like trying to squeeze Nolin into the rotation. Drabek talented too.... he was rushed.... not 1 inning of AAA ball, although that was cuz of Vegas pitcher horrorshow

Sign as a bench player / role player. Upgrade LF and RP Kawa is s*** replacement level depth and no room for him at Buffalo.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Drabek talented too.... he was rushed.... not 1 inning of AAA ball, although that was cuz of Vegas pitcher horrorshow Unless his injury was caused by being rushed I don't see how bringing him up was a problem, More AAA innings wouldn't fix what's wrong with Drabek. Best to see what you got, Especially in the case of Sanchez since if they find he can't start he will be immediately useful in the pen.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Kawa is s*** replacement level depth and no room for him at Buffalo. Tell me who would you rather have? Stick with what we have? Then fair enough I'm all for it but I'm not keen on making a move for 2nd baseman via trade. To be fair I don't too much on Berti to completely understand what he can do for the team this year...I love having a solid SB threat in the lineup but outstand of that I don't know what else he brings ( again lack of knowledge on the player )
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 Tell me who would you rather have? Travis > Izturis > Berti > Goins > Kawa
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Kawa is s*** replacement level depth and no room for him at Buffalo. he's versatile and the advanced statistics say he is an average defender. He's a character guy who gets on base. There's no reason you can't sign him and find room for him in buffalo if Travis does get the nod with the big club out of spring training.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 Travis > Valencia (maybe?) > Kawa > Izturis > Goins > Berti I agree with the above ranking, at the plate. Berti though plays elite defense and can play 3b, ss, 2b, and OF.... combined with 70 grade speed is a better bench piece then Kawa or Goins.
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 At the plate Kawa > Berti > Goins In the field Goins = Berti > Kawa On the basepaths Berti > Goins > Kawa Overall Berti > Kawa = Goins IMO! How do you justify that Berti > Goins at the MLB level at the plate based on 1 season of AA ball? Not to mention you're suggesting he has equal defensive skills? Goins has better minor league stats across the board as a better comparative and is a proven hot glove at 2B in the majors.
