nutz003 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 No. Please stop. Martin will not have another .400 obp season. Edwin is a better hitter than Martin in every way. BA, obp, and extra base/home run power. Look past just their 2014 stats. You are telling me that Martin and Donaldson will not put up comparable offensive numbers if not better hitting in the Roger's Centre. I love EE don't get me wrong, but Martin is no slouch either, and EE has had the benefit of hitting in a power hitter friendly ballpark the last few years. A lot of would be deep flyballs in other ballparks (like Oakland) would be HRs in the Rogers Centre. Donaldson figures he had 14 that he thought were homers in another ballpark. I don't think Martin's numbers will decline, and there is a very good chance they could increase or at least be relatively close to last years.

Martin will put up decent number, lineup as a whole is very good. However the danger is that the Jays will have days where they score 12 runs, and the next day get shut out.

If Martin puts up numbers like 2014 I would be f***ing ecstatic. However, he has a career .350 obp and 2014 was the first time he ever had a .400 obp. Don't forget that he played with the Yanks in 2011-2012 and his numbers weren't amazing.

nutz003 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 He also was quoted as saying that he tried to hit too much for power in NY and deviated from what worked. Since he went back to what had worked his numbers are pretty good.

Since he went back to what had worked his numbers are pretty good. And his SLG actually was higher in NY. So that gives credibility to his claim.
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I think in an ideal world, Martin is hitting 6th or 7th. If we could sign Markakis and had a decent option at DH, I'd look to do something like this: 1. Jose Reyes, SS 2. Nick Markakis, LF 3. Jose Bautista, RF 4. Edwin Encarnacion, 1B 5. Josh Donaldson, 3B 6. Designated Hitter 7. Russell Martin, C 8. Travis/Izturis/Goins, 2B 9. Dalton Pompey, CF

And if Smoak can hit .250-.270 with some pop he could be the answer at DH.
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 40% of the jays plate appearances right now would be from the horrid 6-9 in the order.....

Thats a pretty big IF, but yes I would like to see Smoak given some ABs at 1st and DH EDIT: Steamer projection for Smoak isn't too bad
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 40% of the jays plate appearances right now would be from the horrid 6-9 in the order..... Thank god AA was just quoted stating that LF and 2B are our most important needs.

Thats what you get with this lineup it is an all or nothing type offense, the numbers are deceiving. too many hackers, dont manufacture runs when scoring is tight.
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Thank god AA was just quoted stating that LF and 2B are our most important needs. good but we also need a starter, and bullpen.....not enough money to really go all in......

Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I really wonder if AA had to decide again with Lind but this time knowing he has Martin and JD, do you think he would make that same trade???/ I think now he would keep him.

Yeah but I'm sure AA had to shed some salary in order to go after Martin and Donaldson, and Lind's 7.5 M salary was obvious since you can likely find a lefty/DH bat who crushes RHP for a cheaper cost. Still, this lineup is hugely right handed dominate, and a left-handed bat in the middle or top of the order would be nice.

On the other hand, he may not have pursued Donaldson and/or Martin to the extent he did if Lind was still around. Also, Martin's salary for 2015 is about the same as Lind's so i think they're trying to improve the team without adding much in salary and so far, so good.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Exact same sentiment here. I don't know anyone that's begged for an upgrade at 2nd more than I have over the past few years, but with the recent additions, if they can get an LF, I'll have no problem rolling out trash at 2B until Travis is up. Uhmm....THE ENTIRE FORUM?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Martin a better hitter than Edwin, lol...now that's a f***ing knee slapper?!
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I don't mind having Goins right now, honestly. Saves us a few mil to go after someone else and his defense is enough to cover his shortcoming. I'm not sure what we'll do with Maicer, though.

Well, Maicer can play 3B, SS, 2B, and he's played in the OF in the past I believe. And he's a switch-hitter who can lay down a bunt. An excellent asset off the bench.

Goins would be a fine 25th man defensive replacement, but as the roster is today Mighty Mouse has his spot at 2nd. I fully expect a 2nd base acquisition though.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 BA and OBP do not accurately measure how good a batter is. Use wRC+. Steamer projects Edwin for 142, and Martin for 111. Edwin had a 150 last year and Martin had 140. 2013 Edwin had 144 and Martin had 102. Edwin is clearly the better hitter. Martin is the better player. Its because idiots expect Martin to repeat his 2014 with the bat, but with more homeruns since Rogers Centre.
