The Diamondbacks have reached agreement on a six-year, $68.5MM deal with Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas, reports MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. The deal includes an opt-out that can be triggered after four seasons, and is pending physical, per Sanchez.

The overall guarantee lands just a hair over the $68MM that the White Sox promised Jose Abreu last year. Given changes in the market in the interim — largely driven, perhaps, by Abreu’s own incredible success — that price tag may feel low at first glance. Indeed, much attention has been given to the idea that Tomas, with his prodigious power and youth, could not only beat the Rusney Castillo contract (seven years, $72.5MM) but also reach nine figures.

Of course, the opt-out will play an important role in assessing this deal’s true value, especially once it is learned how much of the guarantee falls under the contract’s last two years. The 4+2 opt-out structure means that Tomas could reach free agency before his age-28 season. If his bat lives up to the hype, he’ll have another shot at a massive payday at that point. But he will have to prove it on the field first.

As MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes wrote in his profile of Tomas, the 70-grade raw power is the right-handed hitter’s calling card. His other tools appear largely to be average or slightly below, and it remains unclear precisely what position Tomas will play and how his defensive ability will shake out. Though considered mobile in relation to his hulking frame, Tomas has drawn some concerns about his body and overall conditioning.

Wow....not a bad deal for Arizona

It's way less than I thought he'd get.

Same!!

A lot of experts thought he'd get more than Abrea and Castillo

Not sure why this team and AA are opposed to signing international players like him. He would have been fine in LF, and could have DHed too. He'll also make 3-4m less per year than Melky. 21 years and counting..

If the projections are even close to correct on this guy, then this deal will end up being a bargain. Wonder how serious the Jays were with him?

ZiPS for Tomas in Arizona - .267/.302/.464, 106 OPS+ in 487 AB, 1.3 WAR in leftfield. With all of the caveats from very little data to work w/

So what round should i take this guy in my fantasy draft is the real question?

Hype will have him pretty high, but he probably won't be deserving of it, unless you really need dingers...

Could be great, but could be Juan Francisco...

What I don't understand is how do you come from Cuba and not sign for any possible $$ value.... I mean everything has to look like a 100 million dollars compared to what they were earning before ($22 a month).

If 2 random strangers on the street offered you money, 1 offering 100$ and 1 offering 1000$, which would you take?

That's why they have agents.

Yeah I know but we're talking tens of millions regardless after making $22/mo.

So just because its more money than you'll ever make, means he should settle for half of what he's worth?

He would probably settle for 1Million if that was his only offer, but MLB teams think he is worth alot more than that, so they have to have a bidding war. Why shouldn't he accept a higher offer?

I'm wondering the same thing. I hold 1/4/6/7/15 in the first round of a twenty team dynasty. If Moncada (spelling unsure) is signed and available, I'll grab him. If not, it's between Rodon and Tomas, with Rodon my probable target.

This is a new player draft, yes? I'd probably have Moncada > Maeda > Tomas > Rodon and some other new draftees > Fernandez/Olivera. Idk where Kang fits in there.

You'd make a terrible agent.

LTR: My client is looking to sign a deal. He's currently one of the top FA outfielders.

GM: I have some interest, but not a lot of payroll space.

LTR: Well there are a half dozen other teams after his services.

GM: I can offer 80Mil over 6 years...

LTR: He grew up poor, I can only let you sign him for 12Mil over 6 years.

GM: ....ok

No, clearly. Though I imagine he would be less likely to "wait it out".

I wasn't being serious. If you don't get what I was trying to say I don't know what else I can do for you.
