Expect the polar opposite reaction to the Martin signing if this happens. Casuals: "Dude's a winner". Nerds: "Dude eats too many weiners.".

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, maybe AA tries to offer market value. Something like 3 years with an option or two in there, if he accepts it, then we acquired an above average player for fair value, if he doesn't, then oh well they weren't willing to overpay because of his body type. Not that big of a deal.

He also loves hot dogs.

Steamer quite likes him next year. 3.6 WAR in 597 PA. Of course Steamer likes Headley more but anyhow.

Steamer really likes Lawrie too. Could be quite the infield next year.

I don't mind Sandoval, but I'd be nervous projecting him to be as good defensively too far into the future. His asking price seems to assume that will be the case.

I won't rage if they get Panda, but there's smarter ways to spend that money. And if you're going to go as far as 100M for Panda, why not just go the extra mile and pick up Shields?

I hope the end result out of all of this is that we learn that the money is actually there, that it gets put to better use, and that this whole thing is just AA despairing Panda, Cherington and Sabean all in one fell swoop.

Didn't San Fran offer a 6 year deal? Why even bother with a 3 year offer?

I doubt AA would offer anything less than a 4 year deal and likely offers a 5 year deal. Seems like he doesn't want to play games with fringe players anymore.

What I don't get is why people are expecting AA to overpay. He's done a lot of things wrong but negotiating contracts has usually been a strength of his.

I don't know what he's going to do, I'm just saying that simply because there's a report out there that he's going to submit an offer doesn't mean he'll go 5/100.

Well AA isn't going to offer anything more than a 5 year deal which would lock him up from his Age 28-32 seasons. I know he's fat but it's not like he's also old.

I could see AA paying above market and giving him a 5 year deal with an opt out after 3 years or so as a way to get Panda to come here over other destinations, knowing that he may have another big contract in 3 years.

Oh, I thought he was way older, and was too lazy to look him up on BR.

I don't think he will break down as badly as some people think. He will slow down but I think he can be passable by the end of the contract on a 5 year term.

what I don't get is in a pitching rich FA market AA seems focussed on position players

two things about Jays SP in 2014:

- an argument could be made that every SP, from MB to Happ, outperformed their true talent level

- Jays got lucky health wise with the SP

Anyone expecting a repeat of 2014 from the same group of 5 needs their heads examined

Yeah I think that really helps mitigate the concerns about his conditioning A LOT. For heavier players he probably will start his decline years earlier than most but a 5 year deal isn't going to be paying for too many of those decline seasons, if any.

I think there are probably better ways to spend the money but there are also plenty of ways to spend that money worse.

In the fatty world 5 years are like 10 years; will be like Cano sign.
